IHS Teardown Finds iPhone 5s Costs $199 to Build, iPhone 5c Costs $173 to Build

An IHS teardown of the new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c finds that a 16GB costs about $199 to build and a 16gb iPhone 5c costs around $173 to build, reports AllThingsD.

According the findings of an IHS report coming tomorrow (but shared with AllThingsD today), Apple spends at least $191 on components to build a 16 gigabyte iPhone 5s. The cost rises to $210 for a 64GB unit. The cost of assembly adds another $8 per unit, bringing the range to between $199 and $218. That cost estimate is pretty close to that of the original iPhone 5, which IHS pegged at about $205 last year. Without a contract, the iPhone sells at prices ranging from $649 to $849, depending on storage capacity.

The iPhone 5c is estimated to cost about $173 to $183 to build, including $7 for assembly.

IHS analyst Andrew Rassweiler says the devices are surprisingly similar.

“I would say that they’re almost the same phone, except that the 5s has the fingerprint sensor, the A7 processor and some newer memory chips that consume less power. Beyond that, they’re basically the same,” he said.

He also highlighted Apple's efforts to support multiple cellular technologies.

“Apple seems to be spending a lot of time and money combining RF chips,” he said. “Where other phone companies would be using whatever chips its various vendors sell off-the-shelf, Apple seems to be pushing its RF suppliers to do things they don’t do for anyone else.”

“The iPhone 5 supported no more than five LTE bands. The 5s and 5c can support as many as 13, and that’s unique,” he said. “Unlike other phone designers, Apple has spent a lot of time collaborating with the RF chip companies to find novel solutions that its competitors don’t have.”

Other notable findings include:
● $41 for parts associated with the display
● $32 for RF chips
● $7 for the fingerprint sensor
● $19 for A7
● $13 for A6
● LPDDR3 RAM for iPhone 5s, LPDDR2 RAM for iPhone 5c

China Prefers iPhone 5s Over iPhone 5c

While analysts have seen the iPhone 5c as being an important device for the Chinese market, it appears the country with the highest preference for the iPhone 5s is China, reports Localytics.

One possible explanation: there was a lot of hoopla around the addition of the gold-colored iPhone 5s as a very attractive addition in particular for Asian markets so this hypothesis may hold true. Keep in mind the gold-colored version is only available on the 5s, not the 5c.

Other major markets also had a very high ratio of the 5s vs. the 5c. In fact, the only country that didn’t have at least a 3 to 1 ratio of the 5s vs. the 5c was the United Kingdom. With the economy in the UK still in recovery, a slightly less strong affinity for the 5s could be the result of a more cost-conscious buyer. Subsidies also play less of a role in the UK’s phone market than in the US, making the upfront cost of phones higher for consumers. Globally the iPhone 5s represented 78% of all of the new iPhone 5s and 5c devices; 76% in the U.S. and 82% in the rest of the world.

Another reason why more iPhone 5s devices have been sold could be that 'hardcore' Apple users rushed out to purchase the latest and greatest iPhone device. Over the next few weeks the iPhone 5c could pick up momentum.

The United States accounted for 68% of all active iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c devices worldwide. Japan came in second with 13%.

iPhone 5s Outsells iPhone 5c By 3.4x in the U.S

Localytics has released a new report indicating that the iPhone 5s has outsold the iPhone 5c by a factor of 3.4x thus far.

In less than 3 days, the iPhone 5s and 5c combined now represent about 1.36% of the total numbers of all iPhones activated in the U.S. market across the top 4 carriers AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint and T-Mobile. From the data we are seeing, 1.05% of all iPhones in the United States are now iPhone 5s and just 0.31% are iPhone 5c. That means that the iPhone 5s outshines the 5c by a factor of 3.4x, a clear indicator that the early adopters are favoring the high-end 5s compared to 5c. This makes sense since those who feel the need to buy a new device the very weekend it launches are most likely the power users who want the highest-end phone experience.

Notably, iPhone 5s and and iPhone 5c activations on AT&T represent 0.67% of all activated iPhones, versus 0.51% for Verizon, 0.12% for Sprint and 0.07% for T-Mobile.

Check out the charts below.

Apple Announces 9 Million Launch Weekend iPhone Sales, 200 Million iOS 7 Updates

Apple today announced it has sold a record-breaking nine million new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c models, just three days after the launch of the new iPhones on September 20.

In addition, more than 200 million iOS devices are now running the completely redesigned iOS 7, making it the fastest software upgrade in history.

Both iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c are available in the US, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK. Demand for iPhone 5s has exceeded the initial supply, and many online orders are scheduled to be shipped in the coming weeks.

“This is our best iPhone launch yet―more than nine million new iPhones sold―a new record for first weekend sales,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “The demand for the new iPhones has been incredible, and while we’ve sold out of our initial supply of iPhone 5s, stores continue to receive new iPhone shipments regularly. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough new iPhones for everyone.”

First iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c Teardown Photos

iExperts have gotten a hold of an iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c and posted teardowns of both devices next to the iPhone 5.

We encounter a surprise with the 5S. There's an extra cable connecting the Touch ID sensor to the charging port assembly. There's a little metal clip that needs to be removed before the connector can be pried loose.

Notes:
● The batteries: iPhone 5 - 5.45Whr, iPhone 5S - 5.92Whr, iPhone 5C - 5.73Whr
● "Apple Japan" is printed on the iPhone 5S and 5C Batteries. This has never been seen on previous generations batteries.
● Apple have finally addressed the switch failure issue that affects iPhone 4, iPod Touch, iPod Nano 6 and iPhone 5 power switches and changed the design with the 5S and 5C.
The switches have an extra coating that should help hold them together to prevent the failures prevalent in the other models.
● New Charger! It's incredibly compact.

Take a look at the photos below.

Apple Has Officially Released iOS 7! Download It Here

Apple has officially released iOS 7, the long awaited revamp of its mobile operating system. Currently the update is available only via OTA update (from iOS Devices via Settings menu)

“iOS 7 is completely redesigned with an entirely new user interface and over 200 new features, so it’s like getting a brand new device, but one that will still be instantly familiar to our users,” notes Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering.

Apple engineered iOS 7 to take full advantage of the advanced 64-bit technologies in iPhone 5s, including the native 64-bit kernel, libraries and drivers. All the built-in apps have been re-engineered for 64-bit, and iOS 7 provides a seamless developer transition with Xcode support and the ability to run both 32-bit and 64-bit apps. iOS 7 also provides deep integration with the new Touch ID sensor and takes full advantage of the new iSight camera sensor to enable new features like automatic image stabilization, Burst Mode and Slo-Mo video with 120 fps. Combined with the new Camera App in iOS 7, iPhone 5s provides up to two-times faster auto-focus, faster photo capture and better dynamic range. iOS 7 is designed to complement the gorgeous exteriors of iPhone 5c, with matching wallpapers and translucency that carry the color through the entire experience.

Highlighted New Features:
● Control Center, which gives you quick access to the controls you want in one convenient place with just one swipe from the bottom of your screen;
● Notification Center, now available from the Lock screen so you can see all your notifications with a simple swipe, and the new Today feature gives you an at-a-glance view of your day with a summary of the important details such as weather, traffic, meetings and events;
● Improved Multitasking that gives users the ability to switch between their apps in a more visual and intuitive way, and iOS 7 pays attention to which apps you use most and automatically keeps your content up to date in the background;
● AirDrop, an entirely new way to quickly and easily share content with people nearby;
● New Camera app filters so you can add real-time photo effects, a square camera option, and you can quickly and easily switch between your four cameras—video, photo, square and panorama—with just a swipe;
● A redesigned Photos app that introduces Moments, a new way to automatically organize your photos and videos based on time and location;
● Full-screen browsing with Safari’s new redesigned user interface, the new smart search field helps simplify searching, and there’s a new view for your bookmarks and your Safari tabs;
● Siri with new male and female voices,* Twitter search integration, Wikipedia integration and Bing web searching within the app; and
● iTunes Radio, a free Internet radio service featuring over 200 stations and an incredible catalog of music from the iTunes Store, combined with features only iTunes can deliver.

Additional new iOS 7 features include a new Find My iPhone Activation Lock, that requires your Apple ID and password before you can turn off Find My iPhone, erase data or re-activate a device after it’s been remotely erased; FaceTime audio for high quality calls over a data network; and new ringtones, alarms, alerts and system sounds.

We are currently waiting for Apple to post direct firmware download links for each device. You can download iOS 7 from here when we have them:
● iPhone
● iPad
● iPod touch

iPhone 5c Preorder Shipments Slipping

With apples decision to only allow the preorder of the iPhone 5c we can only speculate that the shipments of the 5s will be constrained. However we have an updated list of shipment dates that have slipped (color/capacity).

We will start with the first iPhone 5c color to sell out of its shipments and still to this date is in the lead in sales(at least through Apples online store).

iPhone 5c Yellow

Green iPhone 5c

Blue iPhone 5c

Pink iPhone 5c

iPhone 5c white

The preorders of the iPhone 5c have taken us by surprise, we predicted a totally different line up. This is our predicted lineup(and it is now 100% off)
iPhone 5c Green in the lead , than Blue, Pink, White and ironically the one we picked to be the least appealing color is the most appealing color Yellow.

Unlocked 16GB Yellow iPhone 5c is first to sell out, available to ship by 9/25 (Update: 1-2 weeks in Hong Kong)

We have our first sellout!

Following pre-orders going live today for Apple’s new iPhone 5c, shipping times for the yellow, unlocked model of the device have just slipped from the expected delivery date of September 20 to “available to ship by 9/25.” That’s only for the 16GB model of the device, as all other colors and models are currently still listed as arriving by the previously announced Sept. 20 release date.

The device is also currently listed as shipping in 1-2 weeks on Apple’s Hong Kong website and in Canada all models and colors of the iPhone 5c are shipping between Sept. 20 and Sept. 24.

Apple is currently accepting preorders for the new iPhone 5c in the US, UK, Hong Kong, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, and Singapore, and previously announced that the device would begin shipping alongside the new iPhone 5s later this month on September 20. Apple is still listing a delivery date of Sept. 20 in all other launch countries for the iPhone 5c, but we’ll keep you updated if shipping times slip in other countries.

Other than Apple, a number of its carrier and retail partners are also accepting for preorders for the iPhone 5c starting today, but Apple isn’t making preorders available for the iPhone 5s before its release.

Pod2g is Increasingly Confident That iOS 7 Will Get a Public Jailbreak

In a tweet today, pod2g, a member of the evad3rs, the team who brought you the evasi0n jailbreak, stated he was "being more and more confident about an iOS 7 public jailbreak." He also noted "that does not mean soon" in regards to an ETA, so don't expect one anytime soon.

Pod2g was replying to @pimskeks who tweeted that he and pod2g were "working on funny things."

In response to pod2g's revelation, pimskeks tweeted, "hey @pod2g that's confidential."

A few days ago, the evad3rs noted that they have already achieved unsigned userland code execution on iOS 7, giving them a good platform for poking the kernel.

Apple Increases Battery Size of iPhone 5s by 10%, iPhone 5c by 5%

Apple's FCC filings reveal that the size of the battery for its new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c smartphones have been increased by 10% and 5%, respectively.

AnandTech reported the discovery earlier today:

While I'm somewhat skeptical sometimes of the accuracy of battery capacities as reported in FCC disclosures (which I noted about the battery size for the Nexus 5), these numbers seem credible given what I've heard, the statement Apple made during the keynote about the 5C battery size going up, and what I'd expect with some board re-layout for the 5S. The iPhone 5S ends up getting an almost 10 percent increase in size versus the iPhone 5, the iPhone 5C goes up around 5 percent versus the iPhone 5.

The iPhone 5 offered up to 8 hours of talk time on 3G, 8 hours of LTE Internet use, and 225 hours of standby time. Those times have been increased to up to 10 hours of 3G talk time, 10 hours of LTE Internet use, and 250 hours of standby time on the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c.

Apple Officially Unveils the 'iPhone 5c' In Five New Colors

As expected, Apple has introduced the iPhone 5c -- the most colorful iPhone yet. Coming in five new colors, the iPhone 5c features an all new design and is available in blue, green, pink, yellow and white.

iPhone 5c is built on a foundation of features people know and love like the beautiful 4-inch Retina display, blazing fast performance of the A6 chip, and the 8 megapixel iSight camera—all while delivering great battery life. iPhone 5c comes with more LTE bands than any other smartphone in the world, a new FaceTime HD camera, and iOS 7, the most significant iOS update since the original iPhone.

“iPhone 5c is everything iPhone 5 was and more, in an all-new design packed with great features,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “iPhone 5c is designed with a beautiful polycarbonate enclosure that looks and feels so solid in your hand.”

Design:
iPhone 5c features an all-new design crafted from a single, hard-coated polycarbonate body with a steel reinforced frame for a solid, sturdy feel. The steel frame holds the internal components and also doubles as the iPhone 5c’s multiband antenna. The enclosure is one continuous and seamless structure that is finished with a hard coat for a durable and incredibly glossy surface. To complement the all-new iPhone 5c design, Apple created soft, matte, microfiber-lined cases in a very intentional contrast to the glossy, hard coat finish. These sleek silicone cases with unique circular patterns let splashes of color show through, and with five iPhone 5c colors and six cases to choose from, you can mix and match for dozens of fun combinations.

Internals:
iPhone 5c comes with all the features customers love in iPhone 5, and more. The Apple-designed A6 chip provides incredible performance and power efficiency, all while delivering great battery life, so almost everything you do on iPhone 5c is blazing fast, from launching apps and loading web pages to downloading email attachments. iPhone 5c features a stunning 4-inch Retina display and an 8 megapixel iSight camera, the most popular camera in the world. iPhone 5c also includes a new FaceTime HD camera for even better FaceTime calls and self-portraits, and with iOS 7, you can make audio-only FaceTime calls for the first time.

LTE:
iPhone 5c makes it even easier to connect to high-speed networks with support for up to 13 LTE wireless bands, more than any other smartphone in the world. With download speeds up to 100 Mbps, you can browse, download and stream content even faster. iPhone 5c includes dual-band 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi support for up to 150 Mbps and Bluetooth 4.0. iPhone 5c delivers an amazing 10 hours of talk time on 3G networks, up to 10 hours of web browsing on Wi-Fi and LTE networks and up to 8 hours on 3G networks, and up to 10 hours of video playback and up to 40 hours of audio playback.

iOS 7:
iPhone 5c comes with iOS 7, the most significant iOS update since the original iPhone, featuring a stunning new user interface, completely redesigned with an elegant color palette, distinct, functional layers and subtle motion that make it feel more alive. iOS 7 is designed to complement the gorgeous exteriors of iPhone 5c, with matching wallpapers and translucency that carry the color through the entire experience. iOS 7 has hundreds of great new features, including Control Center, Notification Center, improved Multitasking, AirDrop, enhanced Photos, Safari, Siri and introduces iTunes Radio℠, a free Internet radio service based on the music you listen to on iTunes.

Apps:
iPhone 5c customers have access to the revolutionary App Store, which offers more than 900,000 apps to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users in 155 countries around the world. More than 50 billion apps have been downloaded from the App Store to date, offering customers an incredible range of apps in 23 categories, including newspapers and magazines in Newsstand, games and entertainment, business, news, sports, health and fitness and travel.

Designed specifically for iOS, iPhoto, iMovie, Pages, Numbers and Keynote are among the most popular apps in the App Store and are now available as free downloads with the purchase of iPhone 5c. iPhoto and iMovie enable you to do more than you ever thought possible with your photos and movies, and with Pages, Numbers and Keynote you can create, edit and share stunning documents, spreadsheets and presentations on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.
