MobileMe users keep their 20GB of storage in iCloud transition, start iCloud with 25GB

Users who migrate from MobileMe to iCloud will retain their 20GB of yearly storage when the service launches sometime this fall. All individual MobileMe accounts included 20GB of storage per year, leading some users to be concerned about iCloud base storage of 5GB. These users should not fear, though, as Apple is letting users keep the 20GB of MobileMe storage and is adding it to the 5GB that already come with iCloud. Furthermore, users who migrate from MobileMe will get 25GB of iCloud storage from the start, and will not have to worry about paying an extra fee.

Apple Enables MobileMe to iCloud Migration for Developers

Apple is now allowing developers to migrate their MobileMe accounts to iCloud. Those developers want to give it a try should sign in to MobileMe then navigate to http://www.me.com/move.

Your email addresses, your mail and calendars will be copied from MobileMe to iCloud. Contacts and bookmarks will be copied from your devices. Shared calendars may be affected by moving.

You will be able to continue using MobileMe Gallery, iDisk, and iWeb publishing at me.com and on your devices until June 30,2012, even after moving to iCloud.

You will no longer be able to sync Mac Dashboard Widgets, Dock Items, Keychains, Mail Accounts, Rules, Signatures, Smart Mailboxes, and Preferences after moving to iCloud.

iOS devices must be running iOS 5 beta 5, Macs must be running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 Seed and iCloud for OS X Lion beta 6. PCs must be running Windows Vista or later, Outlook 2007 or later and iCloud Control Panel for Windows beta 4.

Lastly backup your contacts, calendars and bookmarks before moving.

Apple posts iCloud transition FAQ; Mail, Contacts, Calendar and Find my iPhone web apps stay

Apple has posted a new web page that is dedicated to answering frequently asked questions about the transition from MobileMe to Apple’s new iCloud service, which launches this fall (via TechCrunch). The webpage explains which services are staying with iCloud and which are going (shown in image above). Those are in addition to these new services:

iTunes in the Cloud
Photo Stream
Documents in the Cloud
Automatic downloads and purchase history for apps and books
Backup and restore
The site also says that users will be able to migrate their current .Mac or MobileMe username to the iCloud service. A big question as of late has been over whether or not iCloud will include functionality in the browser; Apple answers:

Yes. Web access to iCloud Mail, Contacts, Calendar, and Find My iPhone will be available at icloud.com this fall.

Current MobileMe services such as iDisk, Web Gallery, Mac-based sync services, and iWeb published websites will still be supported, for current MobileMe and .Mac (where applicable) users, until June 30, 2012. New iCloud users, which can sign up for a free Me.com account as a part of iCloud, will not be able to access those features.

MobileMe is dead, here’s what you need to know

Apple has unveiled the new iCloud service at a morning keynote which kicked off the WWDC 2011 show. The new product actually retires Apple’s $99 a year MobileMe services suite. If you’re among a couple of hundred thousand subscribers, you may wanna check out a new support document outlining things to know as this transition takes place. The document reads,

Effective June 6, 2011, if you had an active MobileMe account, your service has been automatically extended through June 30, 2012, at no additional charge. After this, the MobileMe service will no longer be available.
There are a couple things you should be aware of…

Following the transition, all your MobileMe mail, contacts and calendars will be moved to iCloud and you will retain your me.com or mac.com email address, Apple promises. MobileMe Family Packs and storage upgrades will cease to exist after today. Additionally, you can no longer create a new MobileMe account or start a two-month trial after June 6, 2011. People with unused activation codes obtained with a MobileMe box purchase can submit a refund request here.

WWDC 2011 iCloud rains down on Google, free of charge

A Stevenote is in progress at San Francisco’s Moscone West where Apple’s boss and his top lieutenants are on stage, making headlines with a plethora of iOS 5, Lion and iCloud announcements. The keynote has kicked off Apple’s annual developer conference which runs through June 10.

“I get to unveil iCloud”, Jobs said as he announced Apple’s latest online services suite that will replace MobileMe as a go-to solution for all your cloud needs. He argued that the cloud – not your computer - has now become the hub for your digital life. Keeping all your devices in sync makes us crazy, Jobs observed, adding “We’ve got a great solution to this problem… We’re going to demote the PC and the Mac to just be a device.”

The cloud sync works automatically between iOS devices, PCs and Macs, per Apple’s “It just works” mantra. Any changes in, say, the Calendar or Contacts apps get automatically pushed via the cloud to all of your iOS devices. This is true for any supported app, which includes the recently updated Pages and Keynote apps. Plus, the new Cloud Storage APIs let third-parties write apps that tie with this cloud storage. For instance, you can create a document in Pages for iPhone and it will automagically become available via the cloud on your iPad – they call that Documents in Cloud. Jobs said,

Documents in the Cloud really completes our iOS document storage story. A lot of us have been working for 10 years to get rid of the file system so the user doesn’t have to learn about it.
What else is cool?

The iCloud service works with App Store, allowing you to see in the store-front app which apps are already installed on your other devices. Tapping the cloud button next to an app will download the app to your device and push it to all other device simultaneously. iOS 5 automatically backs up all your important device content into the cloud “once a day”. This includes your purchased apps, books, music, camera roll photos and videos, app data, device settings, home screen and app organization, text and MMS messages and ringtones. As a result, you can buy a brand new iOS 5 device, take it out of the box, turn it on, provide an Apple ID and password and start using it right away, with all you content beamed from the cloud to your device.

Photo Stream is another new feature that brings the cloud to photos. “I take photos on any device, puts them in the camera roll, and then it’s uploaded to the cloud and downloaded to all of my devices, just waiting for me when I get home. In addition, I can import photos,” Jobs explained. Apple is going to store the last thousand photos on your device in the cloud for a month, Jobs explained. He didn’t say what happens to the photos that have been up there in the cloud for more than 30 days, but presumably they’ll get deleted, archived or something.

So, how much is this cloudy thingie going to cost? Everyone gets the iCloud features free with iOS 5, which will be available this Fall. The Apps, books, music and Photo Stream don’t count against your cloud storage and Apple is also giving away everyone 5GB email storage. For Apple, which has only dipped their toes into online services, iCloud represents their most ambitious undertaking yet and a shot across Google’s bow. Apple ends MobileMe and iWork $30 rebate programs ahead of rumored refreshes

A source within Apple has provided us with an internal memo announcing the end of Apple’s long-running rebate programs for both the MobileMe service and Apple’s iWork productivity suite of applications. The rebate allowed Apple customers to receive $30 off their purchase of the $99 MobileMe if the service was purchased alongside a new Mac or iOS device. The iWork rebate program, also $30 off, became an option with new Mac purchases.

Starting at the “close of business” on April 18th (that’s today in most markets) the MobileMe and iWork rebates no longer exist. Above is a screenshot of the internal memo we obtained. Apple’s decision to end the rebate program comes right before the rumored revamp of Apple’s MobileMe service. Back in February, we reported that MobileMe could now only be purchased online: not at retail stores, and no retail packaging would be shipped to the customer.

Apple is rumored to be updating MobileMe either later this month or in June at the annual World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC). The refresh is rumored to include a new “music locker” service for music streaming to Apple devices from the cloud, in addition to new cloud-based services. A ‘Media Stream’ and ‘Find my Friends’ feature is also rumored to be tied into the revamped MobileMe. Those features may debut in iOS 5. Apple cutting the rebate program may add credence to past reports claiming that MobileMe is becoming a free Apple service.

The iWork rebate program is also being cut. We don’t particularly think that iWork is becoming a free service, but it’s a safe bet that we will be seeing an iWork ’11 update later this year. iWork for Mac has not seen a major refresh since January 2009 as Apple has seemingly put their iWork focus on the iPad. No new features of note have been rumored for iWork, but evidence of this upcoming refresh has already appeared on the Mac App Store and in Apple’s Keynote Remote application for iPhone and iPod touch. Thanks, Robert!

Find My Mac Could Be Coming to OS X

References found in the developer preview of Mac OS X Lion reveal that Apple has been testing a new Find My Mac feature, according to 9to5Mac.

The details are scarce at this point, but we have found references to a Find my Mac service deep down in the 10.7 file system. The actual system files don’t tell us much besides the name, but they do share this Lion build number: 11A372z.

That build number appears to be an internal seed, meaning Apple has been playing around with this Find my Mac feature internally, but swiped it from the developer preview.

Find My iPhone is a free MobileMe service that lets you locate your device on a map should it be lost or stolen.

FT Reiterates iTunes Storage Locker in the Cloud

The Financial Times has reiterated recent rumors that Apple will allow customers to store their iTunes library in the cloud for access from any device.

More than a year after buying Lala, a cloud-based digital music service, Apple is now looking to use the cloud mainly to allow users of its iTunes store to back up their collections and access them from any Apple device.

One person with knowledge of Apple’s plans said the company did not want to undermine the market that it dominates for paid downloads, likening its plans for the cloud to "insurance".

Apple recently discontinued the MobileMe retail box and removed MobileMe from its online store suggesting that a revamp of the service might be coming soon.

Apple Discontinues MobileMe Retail Box, Removes MobileMe From Online Store

Apple has informed retailers that MobileMe Retail Boxes have been discontinued and has removed MobileMe from its online store, according to a MacRumors report.

Apple also appears to have entirely removed MobileMe from its online store, both as a standalone product and as bundled with new Macs. Apple had previously offered a $30 discount on MobileMe when purchased with a new Mac, but that offer is no longer available.

Apple is rumored to be working on a complete overhaul of MobileMe which will see the service be offered free to customers.

A recent report claims that Apple's revamped MobileMe service could offer new social features taking from Facebook, Foursquare, and uStream. Another suggests Apple may be planning to use MobileMe has the brain of its cloud service rather then the storage locker.

Yesterday, Apple revealed that its N.C. Data Center will go live this spring and support its iTunes and MobileMe services.

MobileMe 60-day free trials are still available which hints that perhaps Apple plans to introduce an improved service within the next two months.

Apple to Use MobileMe as the Brain of the Cloud?

Apple may be planning to use MobileMe has the brain of its cloud service rather then the storage locker, according to The Loop.

Instead of trying to provide everyone with cloud storage, I believe Apple will use MobileMe as the brain of the cloud service. The actual storage will be on our individual machines. In effect, in the cloud.

The Loop hypothesizes that MobileMe will store a list of the files on your home computer then retrieve that file when requested by your mobile device.

Here’s the thing — those songs won’t actually be on my iPhone until I tap to play them. As soon as I tap to play, it will download to my phone. You can scroll through your music library and choose something else and it will download and play. In effect, what Apple’s doing is setting up a streaming service that you host. By using advanced caching and MobileMe as the brain behind the operation, you will always have access to your media.

The WSJ is predicting that a major overhaul to MobileMe will result in the service be offered free to Apple customers.

WSJ Reiterates Smaller iPhone, Free MobileMe Service

The WSJ reports that Apple is working on a smaller and cheaper iPhone echoing statements made by Bloomberg only a few days ago.

One of the people, who saw a prototype of a new iPhone several months ago, said the new device is intended to be sold alongside the current line of iPhones and would be about half the size of the iPhone 4. The phone, one of its codenames is N97, would be available to mobile carriers at about half the price of Apple's main line of iPhones, the person said.

The report also predicts an overhaul to MobileMe which would make it free and serve as a locker for your media.

Apple also is exploring a major overhaul of its MobileMe online storage service, the people familiar with the matter said. The service currently requires an annual subscription payment of $99 to $149. Apple is considering making Mobile Me a free service that would serve as a "locker" for personal memorabilia like photos and videos, eliminating the need for consumers' devices to carry a lot of memory, the people familiar with the situation said.

Apple has built a billion dollar data center in North Carolina that should be operational right about now. This data center is expected to be the backbone of the new MobileMe service.

Steve Jobs Says MobileMe 'Will Get a Lot Better' Next Year

Steve Jobs has responded to a customers email about problems with MobileMe and assured him that 'it will get a lot better in 2011', according to a MacRumors report.

-----
I love my iPad and iPhone4 and am a huge fan of yours and all that Apple does. I desperately want to stay inside of Apple'e ecosystem as much as possible.

However, MobileMe is making it very difficult for me to do so. Unreliable/unpredictable syncing, creating duplicate entries (sometimes scores of them), etc. It's almost unusable.

And I know from forums (including Apple's own support boards) that I am not the only one experiencing these very real and frustrating problems.

Please tell me it will get better, and soon?
-----

Yes, it will get a lot better in 2011.

Sent from my iPhone

-----

With iOS 4.2.1 Apple made 'Find My iPhone' a previously paid MobileMe service free for all users.

Evidence Found Suggests Apple May Offer Certain MobileMe Services Free

Apple may be planning to offer certain MobileMe services free to users, according to a discovery made by MacRumors.

New evidence uncovered in recent iOS 4.2 builds and the iOS 4.2.1 golden master seed is suggesting, however, that Apple will be offering a free MobileMe tier to users. The evidence comes in the form of a new private framework known as AppleAccounts.framework that includes a series of device-specific error messages referring to free MobileMe accounts. In particular, the error messages include alerts regarding having reached "the maximum number of free accounts" for a given device and certain devices not being "qualified for free MobileMe service".

MacRumors also found an error message that restricts certain Apple IDs from being used with MobileMe email.

"This Apple ID cannot be used for MobileMe Mail, but you can use it for other MobileMe services."

It's thought that Apple may be planning to use your Apple ID to offer over-the-air syncing. We'll keep you up to date with more information as it becomes available.

New MobileMe Calendar is Now Available to All Members

The new MobileMe Calendar is now out of beta and available to all members.

To start using the new calendar (see system requirements below), sign in to me.com/calendar, click "Upgrade now" in the lower left corner of the Calendar web application, and follow the instructions. If you have already been using the Calendar beta, you don't need to do anything.

Here are the highlights of the new MobileMe Calendar:

The best calendar service for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
The new MobileMe Calendar works great with the built-in calendar app on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch by always keeping it in sync with your Mac or PC. New events or changes are automatically pushed to your iOS 4 devices so your calendar stays up to date. If you schedule a meeting on your device, that's pushed everywhere too.

Share calendars with family and friends
You can easily share your calendars with one or more MobileMe members to keep everyone on the same page. For example, create a shared calendar called "Family" for weekend activities. You can allow the person you're sharing a calendar with to edit events, and you can set up email notifications to tell you when they make a change.

Publish a calendar for a group or team
The new MobileMe Calendar lets you share a read-only public calendar, perfect for publishing an events calendar such as a soccer team schedule. After setting it up, you can send the team members a link to view the calendar on their iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or PC.

Event invitations with RSVPs
You can also invite guests to an event from MobileMe Calendar. Just add their email address to the event (they don't have to be a MobileMe member) and your guests will get an invitation email they can respond to directly by clicking a link. Your event then automatically updates, making it easy to track RSVPs right in your calendar.

New web application
MobileMe Calendar includes a new web application at me.com with great-looking calendar views. You'll find redesigned day, week, and month views, as well as a new list view to make scanning your events easier. The new web application works best with Safari 5, Firefox 3.6, and Internet Explorer 8.

System Requirements:
● iPhone or iPod touch: iOS 4.1
● iPad: iOS 3.2; iOS 4.2 (coming in November) required for push calendar updates
● Mac: Mac OS X Snow Leopard version 10.6.4
● PC: MobileMe Control Panel version 1.6.3 and Outlook 2007 or 2010
