iCloud wizard shows up in 10.7.2 Server

Reader Drew sent along these images of an iCloud setup wizard that came up after the latest 10.7.2 installation on Mac OS Server. We haven’t seen these before so we are posting:

It is notable that these appeared in Server rather than the client setup. This is likely what users who upgrade to 10.7.2 will see when they upgrade…as early as tomorrow. Two more wizard shots below:

Hackers slap Lion overlay onto iOS, with surprisingly good results

Not, “put this on my iPhone now” good but “wow, that’s interesting and must’ve taken a lot of hard work good”. Lifehacker explains:

You can now grab the theme via an app on Theme Outlet. Here’s how. (And make sure you have Dreamboard installed, as this is a Dreamboard theme and requires it.)

Open Cydia
Tap Manage Sources
Tap Edit, then Add, then add source fnetdesigns.com/cydia/repo
Go to the Changes section and install Theme Outlet
Close Cydia, go to your home screen, and open Theme Outlet
Browse for OS X Ultimatum and download it from there
Open up Dreamboard, browse for the OS X Lion Ultimatum theme, and install it.

MuscleNerd Announces a Major Update to the RedSn0w Jailbreak Utility

MuscleNerd has announced a major update to RedSn0w that removes the need to select an IPSW and brings the ability to save and submit your SHSH Blobs to Cydia.

Will be pushing out a major redsn0w feature upgrade before my trip to Korea: http://is.gd/PMAdT1 (and look, no IPSW selection button!)

The new version of RedSn0w will be released before Monday. Rather than requiring ipsw selection, RedSn0w will now automatically fetch the important pieces directly from Apple (and caches them so that it never needs to re-fetch them again).

Check out the screenshots below and stay tuned to Limerain for more info and tutorials. You can follow us on @limerain_com, Facebook page , RSS, etc using the links at the very bottom of the page...

For those wondering, the new RedSn0w "won't auto-fetch the betas (since they're not public). You need to provide them (once)."

Apple opens area of App Store for “Apps Enhanced for Lion”, begins selling Final Cut Pro 7 the old fashioned way

Cnet notes a new section just hit the Mac App Store called Apps Enhanced for Lion.

Apple was a good sport too and allowed one third party app in the top two rows of apps.

Update: Macrumors notes that Apple has begun selling Final Cut Pro 7 (which is likely not enhanced for Lion) the old fashioned way.

We confirmed with an Apple telesales representative at 800-MY-APPLE that Final Cut Studio, part number MB642Z/A, is again available for $999, and $899 for educational customers. The product is only available through the 800-number and is not available in Apple Retail Stores or on the Apple Online Store.
Final Cut Pro 7 was pulled ahead of the release of Final Cut Pro X in June but there has been some backlash among the higher end users because of missing features. Apple, for what it is worth, promised feature updates by the end of summer (which is coming on pretty fast now).

No Snow Leopard left behind: Apple allegedly bringing iCloud compatibility to OS X 10.6

Apple is said to be working on an incremental operating system update for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard that will let its users enjoy seamless integration with the iCloud service, which is scheduled to go live this Fall when iOS 5 debuts. MacRumors spotted the above notice in a developer’s .Mac preference pane in TIGER after he had upgraded his MobileMe account to iCloud:

You will no longer be able to sync with this machine because you’ve upgraded to iCloud. iCloud requires a computer running Mac OS X Snow Leopard v10.6.9 or later for Contacts, Calendars and Bookmarks.
This is actually the first mention of more detailed iCloud system requirements beyond a brief description on Apple’s iCloud page. OS X 10.6.9, of course, has yet to be released, but it’s nice seeing that Apple won’t be leaving out Snow Leopard users with its upcoming cloud service.

Chrome gets Omnibar history sync, Lion multitouch gestures, and more

Several new enhancements have surfaced in the latest developer version of Google’s Chrome browser. As previously announced, the software now respects Apple’s multitouch gesturing philosophy in OS X Lion. This means you can flick your finger left or right on your Magic Mouse (or two fingers on a trackpad) to advance and go back in your history. Unfortunately, the browser won’t yet let you double-tap or pinch to smoothly zoom in and out of web pages iPhone-style, like Safari on Lion. Another nice-to-have: You can now rest assured that accidentally hitting the Command + Q combo won’t quit Chrome because a subtle overlay appears telling you to hold down the combo briefly in order to quit (see the above screenshot), which has been around for awhile since past builds.

Chrome now supports Lion’s Full-Screen feature through standard full-screen button found in the upper right corner of the window. The latest nightly build across all platforms also added Omnibar history syncing (see below), in addition to the previously available syncing of extensions, passwords, bookmarks, web apps, autofill items, browser settings and themes. A multi-profile feature has also seen some work in the visual department, even though it is not yet available in nightly Chrome builds for OS X. If you wish to try out those experimental features, we recommend installing the Google Chrome Canary build that runs without a hiccup alongside your existing stable Chrome installation.

OS X Lion $69 USB stick enters Apple’s inventory system, release is imminent

In early August we broke the news that Apple began selling OS X Lion USB sticks through AppleCare. Now, Apple will likely begin selling these USB sticks sometime this week to the general public for $69. According to Mr. X, the new product has shown up in the Apple internal system for a launch on August 15th (tonight/tomorrow) – but we can’t confirm that the launch will actually happen on the 15th. Because it has shown up in the system, we are confident that the product’s release is happening very soon.

Browse Google+ on the desktop with Tab for Google+

Want to get your Game on in the new Google Games?

Tab for Google+ is an app available on the Mac App Store that brings Google+’s web functionality to the Mac desktop. The app is available for free and offers just about every feature plus.google.com offers — except Hangouts. Upon logging in via your Google account, you’ll be greeted with the main sections of the app: Streams, Photos, Circles, Profile and Notifications.

The sections follow suit with the functionality of the website. Streams and Photos curates content from the people you’re following. Circles allows you to see your list of circles and the content coming in from each specific one. Lastly, Notifications let’s you know what’s going on with your account.

Of course, this application won’t replace Google+’s website, rather it’s just a nice app that sits in your applications bar to view while you work. Perhaps if the website is more your thing, check out Google+ for Mac which is essentially just a browser window. We’re hearing the developer is working to make it native though. Check out another screenshot below.

Google changing Chrome gestures to respect Lion’s multitouch guidelines

Now that Apple let Lion out of the cage, Google is developing a Chrome browser version to take advantage of the operating system’s gestures support. The search company announced on the Google Chrome Releases blog a new developer build (version 14.0.835.0) that re-enables a two-finger gesture “which respects the system preference”. A three-finger swipe that would previously move you backward and forward in browsing history now respects system-wide preference in Lion that flips between full-screen apps. Chrome still lets you go forward and backward in browsing history by invoking a two-finger swipe left or right.

The release also comes with a multi-profile user interface improvements and support for a new communication protocol for Web Sockets. The former lets one browse the web using multiple online identities and switch them easily. Windows and Linux builds added platform-specific tweaks and changes as well. It’ll be some time before Chrome 14 makes it down to the stable channel, but if you wish to try out experimental new features without messing with your existing Chrome installation and user profile, we recommend installing the Canary build of the browser.

Lion Downloads Top One Million in First Day

Apple today announced that in just one day, over one million users bought and downloaded Mac OS X Lion, the eighth major release of the world's most advanced operating system. Available through the Mac App Store for $29.99 (US), users are buying Lion faster than any other OS release in Apple's history.

"Lion is off to a great start, user reviews and industry reaction have been fantastic," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "Lion is a huge step forward, it's not only packed with innovative features but it's incredibly easy for users to update their Macs to the best OS we've ever made."

Lion introduces more than 250 new features to the Mac, including Multi-Touch gestures; system-wide support for full screen apps; Mission Control, an innovative view of everything running on your Mac; the Mac App Store, the best place to find and explore great software; Launchpad, a new home for all your apps; and a completely redesigned Mail app.

Known Issues with Adobe Products on Mac OS 10.7 Lion

Adobe has posted a support document outlining known issues with their products on Mac OS X Lion. If you use Adobe products heavily you may want to read through documents before upgrading to Lion.

Some of the main issues they highlight are:
● Apple has made the user Library folder hidden. Preferences, presets, and other user customization settings are stored within this Library folder.
● Java Runtime needs to be installed manually, otherwise applications may behave inconsistently
● Scrolling behavior opposite of expected
● Rosetta support no longer included with Lion. CS2 or earlier versions of Adobe products required Rosetta
● Lion has some exciting new features such as Autosave, Restore, Versioning, Full Screen Mode, and more multi-touch gestures. Since many of these features require new code in order to work properly, Adobe will investigate which ones make sense to our customers for inclusion in future versions of our products.
● Flash Player may cause higher CPU activity when playing a YouTube video. Possibly related to disabled hardware acceleration.

It's unclear why Adobe didn't address these issues during the months that Mac OS X Lion was available as a developer preview.
