Leaked Microsoft Video Parodies Google Chrome Ad

An internal Microsoft 'Scroogled' video targeting Google Chrome has been leaked online.

The video parodies Google's Chrome ads by following a bouncing ball that shows how Google targets you everywhere with ads. It's features the same music and style as the Chrome "Now Everywhere" ad.

A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed to The Verge that the ad is genuine, stating it's "an internal video that was leaked."

Chrome gets Omnibar history sync, Lion multitouch gestures, and more

Several new enhancements have surfaced in the latest developer version of Google’s Chrome browser. As previously announced, the software now respects Apple’s multitouch gesturing philosophy in OS X Lion. This means you can flick your finger left or right on your Magic Mouse (or two fingers on a trackpad) to advance and go back in your history. Unfortunately, the browser won’t yet let you double-tap or pinch to smoothly zoom in and out of web pages iPhone-style, like Safari on Lion. Another nice-to-have: You can now rest assured that accidentally hitting the Command + Q combo won’t quit Chrome because a subtle overlay appears telling you to hold down the combo briefly in order to quit (see the above screenshot), which has been around for awhile since past builds.

Chrome now supports Lion’s Full-Screen feature through standard full-screen button found in the upper right corner of the window. The latest nightly build across all platforms also added Omnibar history syncing (see below), in addition to the previously available syncing of extensions, passwords, bookmarks, web apps, autofill items, browser settings and themes. A multi-profile feature has also seen some work in the visual department, even though it is not yet available in nightly Chrome builds for OS X. If you wish to try out those experimental features, we recommend installing the Google Chrome Canary build that runs without a hiccup alongside your existing stable Chrome installation.

Google changing Chrome gestures to respect Lion’s multitouch guidelines

Now that Apple let Lion out of the cage, Google is developing a Chrome browser version to take advantage of the operating system’s gestures support. The search company announced on the Google Chrome Releases blog a new developer build (version 14.0.835.0) that re-enables a two-finger gesture “which respects the system preference”. A three-finger swipe that would previously move you backward and forward in browsing history now respects system-wide preference in Lion that flips between full-screen apps. Chrome still lets you go forward and backward in browsing history by invoking a two-finger swipe left or right.

The release also comes with a multi-profile user interface improvements and support for a new communication protocol for Web Sockets. The former lets one browse the web using multiple online identities and switch them easily. Windows and Linux builds added platform-specific tweaks and changes as well. It’ll be some time before Chrome 14 makes it down to the stable channel, but if you wish to try out experimental new features without messing with your existing Chrome installation and user profile, we recommend installing the Canary build of the browser.

iPad to send Windows into negative growth for the first time ever?

If Windows starts to decline in numbers, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer might actually be in trouble. If things weren’t bad enough, Microsoft also has to contend with a ChromeOS from Google and maybe even some ARM powered laptops from Apple.

Google’s silent updating in action: Chrome squashes nasty Flash Player bug ahead of Adobe

When a critical Flash Player vulnerability was discovered being used in the wild last week, Adobe posted an advisory and promised an update within a week. The exploitable software flaw lets attackers take control of your system after opening an Excel spreadsheet with an embedded malicious Flash file (Office 2010 is said to feature safety countermeasures that prevent harmful code execution).

This undoubtedly nasty bug that affected the whole web and not just the parts of it needed a quick fix. It comes as a surprise that Google has managed to beat Adobe to the update punch by squashing the bug with a Chrome update while Adobe preps to issue the fix this week. How’s that possible?


For starters, Google and Adobe have an ongoing relationship that gives the search monster access to early Flash Player builds. In this case, a yet-to-be-released Flash Player build comes integrated with the latest Chrome update. Folks who run Flash Player plug-in for other browsers are left in the cold.

Second, Chrome takes silent updating to extremes. A Google process runs in the background on your computer, awaiting notification from the update server. When an update goes live, the process downloads files and updates your browser. This happens silently and the installation completes the next time Chrome restarts. You don’t even realize it unless you check out the version number by choosing About Google Chrome under the wrench menu.

Apple stopped preloading Flash Player on Macs last October. The Flash plug-in is often blamed for crashes, poor performance and its resource intensiveness. Daring Fireball cautions people to uninstall Flash from their Mac and instead use Chrome for online Flash videos, games and other content. It’s a sound advice. After all, the recently released Chrome 10 did extend sandboxing technology to the integrated Flash Player. As a result, the plug-in runs as a separate process isolated from other tabs, the rest of the browser and a host operating system.

Comex May Wait for Verizon iPhone Before Releasing Untether

Comex may wait for the release of the Verizon iPhone before releasing his untether, according to a tweet he sent earlier today.

comex: @i0n1c I don't know, I think I'm waiting for the Verizon iPhone.

Currently, the only untether is available is the 'backup plan' from the iPhone Dev-Team. The Chronic Dev-Team has said they are also working on their own untether.

Breaking news on Verizon Apple deal!

According to our source, Apple and Verizon have made a deal and are going to release Verizon branded products (iPhone 4 & iPad(current generations)) sometime in the first two quarters of 2011. This source gave us very accurate news when the iPhone 4 was being released and quantities that would be available. The source also stated that there has been talk of a 7-8 inch offering from Apple. Another source stated that the only way Verizon got the deal in is that Verizon would lag behind AT&T by one year give or take a few months...






IMO I will not believe this until I see it with my own eyes! Even though our sources have proven there worth it is to big of a story to believe it just like that, what happened to the 5yr contract? Between AT&T and Apple?

Google Asks Manufacturers to Delay Google TV Launch

Google has asked manufacturers to delay their launches of Google TV so that it can improve the product after it received lukewarm reviews, according to the New York Times.

Although Google already has a deal with Sony for its Internet TVs, other television makers — Toshiba, LG Electronics and Sharp — were prepared to flaunt their versions of the systems.

But Google has asked the TV makers to delay their introductions, according to people familiar with the company’s plans, so that it can refine the software, which has received a lukewarm reception. The late request caught some of the manufacturers off guard.

The NYT notes that Google has faced the same situation with its launch of Android for tablets and ChromeOS for netbooks.

Apple Removes Jailbreak API From iOS 4.2

Apple has removed its built in methods to help developers detect jailbroken devices from iOS 4.2, according to NetworkWorld.

This detection API let the MDM applications in effect ask the operating system if it had been compromised. Jailbreak exploits typically change a number of operating system files, and exploit one or another low-level OS features to let users directly load their own or third-party applications.

Previously, developers had created their own series of operating system checks to detect jailbreak.

"We used it when it was available, but as an adjunct," says Joe Owen, vice president of engineering at Sybase, which offers the Afaria device management software. "I’m not sure what motivated their removing that….I’ve not had anyone [at enterprise customer sites] talk to me about this API being present or being removed."

In July of this year the Library of Congress deemed that jailbreaking your iPhone in order to install applications not approved by Apple and/or to unlock is legal.

Google Announces Special Chrome Event on December 7th

Google is holding a special Chrome Event on December 7th at which they are expected to announced the release of a netbook running the new Chrome Operating System. A Chrome Web / App Store is expected to release alongside the new OS.

At this point do we really care? Googles android OS is buggy and needs constant updates, and drains batteries with it's flash compatible os which there is no real reason for, the iPhone doesn't have flash and I don't even notice the difference. I lover chrome browser and would be extremely excited if they would release it for the iPhone!
