iOS 6.1 Jailbreak to Support All 22 Device Variations

MuscleNerd, a popular hacker and member of the evad3rs, has revealed that the upcoming iOS 6.1 jailbreak will support all 22 device variations and likely the atv2.

@MuscleNerd is every other device supported?

@unicornhacker yes, every other 6.1 device variation will be supported. All TWENTY-TWO of them (omg!). Plus atv2 if it's out in time.

Unfortunately, with the exploit that's being used, the Apple TV 3 will not be supported.

@MuscleNerd @evad3rs_jb So those of us with atv3 still have to wait for a bootrom

@arovik not necessarily. Although atv3 uses far fewer services that can be tampered with, it's not isolated. But it can't use this next JB

As announced by pod2g, the team is waiting for iOS 6.1 final to drop before releasing their jailbreak. Apple recently released iOS 6.1 'Beta 5'. Interestingly, this build is not really a beta but a publicly releasable build.

Pod2g and Planetbeing Find Two New Vulnerabilities for iOS 6 Jailbreak

Pod2g and planetbeing have found two new vulnerabilities but are still missing the initial code execution for a public jailbreak release.

Yesterday we reported that pod2g and planetbeing had teamed up to do some work on the iOS 6 jailbreak. Early this morning pod2g revealed that they have found two new vulnerabilities in just a day.

Made some nice progress today with @pod2g. I think I'll try to reward myself with a nap. :)

pod2g: @planetbeing oh yeah! 2 new vulnerabilities in a day, chance was with us. But we still miss that initial code execution for a public jb :/

It's great that progress is being made. Hopefully, the two find that last piece of the puzzle and are able to release their jailbreak to rest of us.

Pod2g May Now Be Working With Planetbeing on the iOS 6 Jailbreak

A recent tweet from planetbeing suggests that he and pod2g may now be working together towards a publicly releasable jailbreak of iOS 6.

Earlier this evening, planetbeing tweeted, "Made some nice progress today with @pod2g. I think I'll try to reward myself with a nap. :)".

When announcing his new company, 2G Lab, Pod2g revealed that he had not been present in the security field for a few months while he concentrated on building his PodDJ app. Now that the app has been released he said that he'll "focus on both subjects."

At the start of the month, planetbeing noted that he was in possession of an untethered jailbreak for iOS 6.0.2; however, an additional exploit or two was needed before a public release in order to retain a failbreak to help with finding future jailbreaks.

Hopefully, with planetbeing and pod2g teaming up, we will finally see a jailbreak for iOS 6!

iPhone Dev-Team Releases RedSn0w and PwnageTool Updates to Jailbreak iOS 5.1.1

The iPhone Dev-Team has released updates to PwnageTool, RedSn0w, and CInject that bring support for the iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak.

RedSn0w
redsn0w allows owners of A4+earlier devices to install rocky-racoon two different ways:
● backup/restore method similar to Absinthe and cinject
● its traditional limera1n-based ramdisk install. If you have a lot of media on your A4 device (music, movies, TV shows, etc), then the ramdisk method is preferrred because it avoids any possibility of later problems related to syncing to iCloud (including Photo Stream and Music Match). The ramdisk method is not available for A5 devices or later because limera1n can't be used. If you'd like to use redsn0w's ramdisk method, just be sure to put the A4 device in DFU or Recovery mode before starting redsn0w (otherwise it will immediately start to use the backup/restore method).

We've also added a new redsn0w feature specifically for those who got in on the SAM unlock: you can now include your SAM tickets as part of your initial ramdisk jailbreak of iPhone4 or earlier, or alternatively you can upload your SAM tickets to any device after its been jailbroken. redsn0w accepts either the individual SAM activation ticket plist file, or the entire zip file created by redsn0w's "Backup" button. As usual, redsn0w continues to cover all of its previous jailbreaks and untethers (so redsn0w-0.9.12b1 covers everything from 5.1.1 all the way back to 4.1).

PwnageTool
PwnageTool also avoids any possible sync issues, but again it applies only to A4+earlier devices. If you unlock your iPhone with ultrasn0w or a commercial method, you must use PwnageTool to avoid updating your baseband otherwise you'll lose the unlock. PwnageTool will also jailbreak+untether the AppleTV2,1 5.0_2B206f (unless you customize the IPSW further, you'll have just basic SSH access to the device).

Contributions:
If you'd like to contribute to those that actually developed rocky-racoon, please visit here (any other links you may see are not going to the actual rocky-racoon developers, they're being diverted to other "related" or fraudulent accounts).

This particular jailbreak brought an unusual amount of fanfare and hoopla to the table, including "press releases" and other haughty silliness. We'd just like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that jailbreaking is about freedom, not fame and donations!

Proview Seeks to Stop iPad Shipments Out of China

Proview is petitioning Chinese customs to stop shipments of Apple iPads, reports Reuters.

The company claims to own to the 'iPad' trademark in China and plans to stop shipments of the table going in and out of the country. Proview won a lawsuit over the trademark late last year and is now looking to enforce the court's ruling.

Just yesterday it was reported that Chinese authorities had confiscated some iPads from a retailer on the basis of trademark infringement.

Apple says it bought the worldwide rights to the trademark long ago.

"We bought Proview's worldwide rights to the iPad trademark in 10 different countries several years ago. Proview refuses to honor their agreement with Apple in China and a Hong Kong court has sided with Apple in this matter," an Apple spokeswoman said.

On January 5th Apple filed an appeal with the Higher People's Court of Guangdong Province, after losing its claim to the trademark in the Shenzhen Intermediate People's Court.

Chinese Authorities Confiscate iPads From Retailers for Trademark Infringement

Chinese authorities have reportedly begun confiscating iPads from local retailers following the a verdict that Apple infringed on the iPad trademark owned by Proview in the country, reports Digicha.

Apparently as a result of the Proview iPad trademark infringement verdict, some local Administrations of Industry and Commerce (AIC) have started to confiscate Apple ($AAPL) iPads they find on sale. The article claims that many stores and resellers have taken the products off their shelves to avoid discovery by authorities, but if you ask for an iPad you can still buy one. It is not clear if this is going to happen nationwide or if this is just the action of a handful of local authorities, but Apple has a lot of risk in this case.

Proview reportedly plans to ask for 10 billion yuan ($1.5 billion USD) in compensation from Apple.

Apple filed an appeal on January 5th with the Higher People's Court of Guangdong Province, after losing its claim to the trademark in the Shenzhen Intermediate People's Court. Apple says that a Proview subsidiary in Taiwan sold the trademark rights to a UK company called "IP Applications" which then sold the mark to Apple in 2010.

Proview Wants $1.5 Billion From Apple for Infringing Its iPad Trademark

Beijing authorities have reportedly opened an investigation into Apple's possible infringement of Proview's iPad trademark in China, reports GlobalTimes.

According to the Beijing Evening News, the Xicheng District Administration for Industry and Commerce has investigated the case, as it is the district where one of the five Apple stores in China is located. Apple has been denied the rights to the trademark for the term "iPad" in China, after a legal battle with Hong Kong-based Proview Technology. Proview registered the iPad trademark in markets as early as 2000, long before Apple unveiled the iPad in [2010].

"Proview made a formal complaint to the Xicheng administration in 2011 and they had planned to slap Apple with a 240 million yuan ($38 million) fine, but it was suspended after Apple's objections," said Xie Xianghui, a lawyer from the Shenzhen branch of Grandall Law Firm. Xie says that Proview has also filed lawsuits against Apple authorized retailers and plans to ask for 10 billion yuan ($1.5 billion USD) in compensation from Apple.

The Xicheng District Administration says the situation is under investigation and they haven't announced the possibility of a fine for Apple.

Planetbeing, MuscleNerd, and P0sixninja Help Pod2g With A5 Untethered Jailbreak

Pod2g has announced that Planetbeing, MuscleNerd, and P0sixninja have joined his effort to release an untethered jailbreak of the iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

@planetbeing, the legendary hacker behind iPhone Linux and lot of jailbreaks has joined the A5 research! The famous @MuscleNerd, the leader of the iPhone Dev Team, who did a lot of tests for Corona and whom integrated it and made it simple in redsn0w is willing to help also. And last, but not least @p0sixninja, the leader of the Chronic Dev Team, and my partner for years on iPhone security research has started to code and fuzz the Apple sandbox.

We now have a dream team to find a path for a public release of the A5 jailbreak. Cross your fingers.

Yesterday, pod2g posted a FAQ on why the A5 jailbreak had not been released yet. The key reason being that the exploit used to inject the untethering files to the 4S relies on having a developer account.

With the help of planetbeing, MuscleNerd, and p0sixninja, pod2g is hoping to find a distributable exploit to remount the system partition read/write and to set Corona files at the correct places.

Pod2g Posts FAQ on iPhone 4S and iPad 2 Untethered Jailbreak

Pod2g has posted on his blog to answer some questions about the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 untethered jailbreak.

How could pod2g have an untethered 4S and dev teams still haven't released tools to achieve this at home ?
The exploit I used to inject the untethering files to the 4S relies on having a developer account, and can't be released publicly. It's the same reason why @MuscleNerd has an iPad 2 tethered jailbreak but couldn't distribute it. So, we need to find a distributable exploit to remount the system partition read/write and to set Corona files at the correct places.

Why A4 version of Corona was easier to release ?
Because a tethered jailbreak is a good way to install Corona!

Why don't you do a tethered jailbreak then ?
A tethered jailbreak also relies on an exploitable vulnerability that we still haven't found yet !

Earlier this week, pod2g posted that he had made good progress on the jailbreak for A5 devices and said with some luck we could expect a release in a week.

Pod2g Resolves Cache Troubles With the iPhone 4S Untethered Jailbreak

Pod2g has resolved the cache troubles with the iPhone 4S untethered jailbreak, according to a new progress update.

---
OK, figured it out, the A5 cache is not a problem anymore. I sorted it out by doing the untether in a single thread and by flushing all the dcache then all the icache in a row at a strategical point of the process. It took me like a hundred of tests to find the key. Hard for the nerves.

For the tech guys, here is a link explaining issues related to self modifying code ( or code patching ) on the ARM platform : http://blogs.arm.com/software-enablemen ... ying-code/

Another news : I discussed with @saurik today about the launchd boot process, and he's found one missing piece of the puzzle I needed to have a perfectly stable jailbreak. He's definitly one of the best iOS gurus out there. Thank you saurik!

Progress Report on the iOS 5.0.1 Untethered Jailbreak

Pod2g has issued a new progress report on the iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak in which he reveals that the jailbreak for old devices is being packaged for release.

Thanks to donators, pod2g has received enough financial support to purchase an iPhone 4S and iPad 2 and will soon start working on the jailbreak for those devices.

---
Hello my friends,I know that I've been silent yesterday and that it was annoying.

Sorry for this, but I had to organize things for the release.
Also, I've tested iPad 1 and it worked.
Today I hope I can test a 3Gs.

BTW: please don't propose to be a beta tester because I'm too paranoid, fearing leaks.

Now the time to finalize the jailbreak for old devices, fix some stability issues and package the whole. That will take some days.

In the meanwhile, I'm starting the research for iPad 2 and 4S.I'll take you informed of my progress.

Finally, I want to thank all who donated. I now can buy both devices! I don't know what to say.

Thank you very much my friends.
---

Stay tuned to Limerain on @limerain_com, Facebook page , or RSS for news on when the jailbreak will be released.

Apple Loses Case Over 'iPad' Trademark in China

Apple has reportedly lost a trademark battle with a Chinese company that lawfully trademarked the 'iPad' name in 2000, reports the Financial Post.

The Southern Metropolis Daily newspaper is citing court documents that indicate a Chinese patent court in Shenzhen rejected Apple's claim that Proview Technology was infringing on its trademark.

Apple purchased the European rights to the iPad name from Proview's global parent last year for about $55,000 and filed an infringement lawsuit against the Shenzhen subsidiary six months ago, claiming the European deal also included China. While Tuesday's reported ruling suggests China's legal system does not agree, Apple officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Proview, having 400 million yuan ($64 million dollars) in debt, sued Apple in October for 10 billion yuan ($1.6 billion) in damages due to copyright infringement.

Motorbike gang raids Apple’s Covent Garden store, steals iPads

Apple’s Covent Garden store in London has been robbed early this morning local time. Just like in the movies, a gang consisting of seven thieves on mopeds has raided the prominent retail spot in an attempt to steal iOS devices and Mac notebooks. The smash and grab, per The Next Web, was first reported by Rob Shoesmith who described hearing “a load of motorbikes” around 1:15am. According to The Metropolitan Police, the thieves stole iPads and “other similar devices”, adding in a statement:

It is believed there were around 7 moped riders / motorcyclists involved, most if not all with a pillion passenger. All persons were in full face crash helmets. Shortly afterwards Islington police saw a moped and followed and attempted to stop it, but it was lost.
An abandoned moped was found in the vicinity of Wyclif Court, St John Street EC1. Officers subsequently apprehended two individuals inside the block of flats, carrying Apple gear in bags. Apple opened the Covent Garden Store August 7 last year and recently used the outlet to live-stream the October 4 event to U.K. journalists. Criminals are increasingly targeting Apple stores for hot gear that commands high prices on the street. It’s not just individuals or small groups, mind you…

Foxconn’s $12 billion Brazilian iPad factory in jeopardy

According to Reuters, Foxconn’s new manufacturing plant in Brazil may be in jeopardy due to the company’s “crazy demands” related to tax breaks, lack of a skilled workforce, and the logistics of necessary infrastructure. The report claims after talking to government officials, “it is unclear whether the project will ever get off the ground”.

“The talks have been very difficult, and the project for a Brazilian iPad is in doubt,” one official said. “(Foxconn) is making crazy demands” for tax breaks and other special treatment, the official added.
Brazilian Minister of Science and Technology Aloizio Mercadante says the planned $12 billion investment might become a little less than originally expected. Reuters even suggests it’s possible Foxconn may only assemble iPads in Brazil using parts made elsewhere, rather than producing components onsite:

“One option could be for Foxconn or a Brazilian partner to simply assemble foreign-made parts to the iPad, rather than producing screens and other components locally. Other steps could also be taken to reduce the project’s scale, which may simply have been too ambitious for all parties.”
The project, which was initially set to begin production in July, was pushed back to November due to similar concerns. On September 14th, we told you Aloizio Mercadante confirmed that iPads made at Foxconn’s new plant in Jundiaí, near São Paulo, would hit the market by December. It’s unclear now whether or not the deal will fall through.

Mercedes-Benz shows off “iPhone Interface Plus” concept, coming 2012

The concept video above shows off the Mercedes-Benz’ vision for the “future of multimedia online systems” using smartphones as a media hub, most of which seems to resemble the description of their newly announced “iPhone Interface Plus” concept.

Mercedes is showing off some pretty impressive iPhone integration at this year’s IAA Motor Show in Frankfurt. In what we assume is a major evolution of their Media Interface Plus accessory unveiled last year, the company is set to introduce an “iPhone Interface Plus” concept, available as a retrofit on every Mercedes Benz starting summer 2012.

Working together with a free app from the App Store, an iPhone will be concealed in the “glove compartment and fully integrated into the vehicle electronics”. You can then use hardware controls and the a larger display on the vehicle’s dashboard to control and view content with as little distraction as possible while driving.

The press release explains:

“…the iPhone® screen can be seen on the display screen of the audio system, the audio signals are played through the car’s loudspeakers and the smartphone itself can be controlled through the car’s rotary pushbutton – a perfect example of successful integration. And of course all the time the iPhone® is connected to the control unit, it will automatically be recharging.”
The Mercedes-Benz app is designed specifically for in-car use, allowing for easy one-click interaction with social networks, email, and GPS services, as well as text-to-speech capabilities for email, Twitter, and Facebook. The press release also mentions “holistic integration” with the ability to do things such as “Like currently playing media” and “Share your current destination via Facebook and Twitter”. Another interesting feature is the “Car Finder”, which as the name implies guides you backed to your parked vehicle.

Mercedes also announced a new “crash-proof holder” for iPad, which attaches the device to headrests for rear passenger viewing. From the press release:

“The iPad Integration Plus system for rear seat passengers can be tilted, or turned through 90°. This convenient docking station is an ergonomic solution that makes it possible to use the Apple iPad®, with all its familiar functions, in your Mercedes-Benz. All connection points are easily accessible. The battery can also be recharged, using a separate Apple data cable that links into the vehicle’s on-board electricity supply via an integrated USB interface.”

HP exits low-margin PC biz, shoots down TouchPad and webOS phones

Prescient image courtesy of Gizmodo

The Wall Street Journal reports that Hewlett-Packard, the leading computer maker in the world, is about to announce that it will be spinning off its personal computer business, excluding printers, storage or networking. In a just released statement via BusinessWire, the computer maker offically confirmed its board of directors has authorized “the exploration of strategic alternatives for its Personal Systems Group (PSG), which may include “a full or partial separation of PSG from HP through a spin-off or other transaction.

Quoting the obligatory “people familiar with the matter”, the paper further writes that HP “is close to a $10 billion deal to acquire U.K. software firm Autonomy Corp.” The spin off announcement is expected later today as the computer maker reports quarterly earnings. Shockingly, HP is abandoning its webOS devices, from their release:

In addition, HP reported that it plans to announce that it will discontinue operations for webOS devices, specifically the TouchPad and webOS phones. HP will continue to explore options to optimize the value of webOS software going forward.
And here’s the most interesting bit from the Journal’s story:

As part of Hewlett-Packard’s planned spin off of its personal computer business, it will keep the webOS software business but let go of the hardware, meaning HP is shutting down its tablets business, people familiar with the matter said. H-P’s tablet is the TouchPad, an iPad rival that went on sale in July starting at $499. Earlier this month, HP cut its price 20 percent. HP got webOS when it acquired Palm Inc. in April 2010 for $1.2 billion. H-P may license the webOS software to others, the people added.
Mind you, not that HP pulling Kin matters in the greater scheme of things because the TouchPad didn’t even blip on Apple’s radar, but separating the personal computer business from their enterprise group could present Apple with an ample opportunity to grow Mac sales. Earlier today, a DisplaySearch survey revealed that – if you count tablets as PCs – Apple has now officially become the world’s leading PC manufacturer with a 21.4 percent share, passing HP in sales by four million units.

As our Seth Weintraub puts it, “the leading PC hardware company just exited all hardware”. And here’s your food for thought if you’re still tripping on this: Perhaps HP will be selling their intellectual property to Google, Apple or Microsoft, giving a potential suitor plenty of ammo for patent battles. Dang, talk about slow news day!
