Chpwn's Jailbreak to be Reserved as 'Failbreak' for iOS Jailbreak Developers Only

Chpwn has revealed that his jailbreak of iOS 6 will be reserved as a 'failbreak' for iOS jailbreak developers only.

@chpwn: RT @AlexEHeath: They have a "failbreak" for iOS 6 (likely what we all saw on @chpwn's iPhone 5), but it's only for devs and can't be released to the public

@chpwn: Just to clarify: what @pod2g meant is that the "failbreak" is for jailbreak developers (e.g. @iphone_dev, @chronicdevteam, etc).

It's our understanding that this 'failbreak' will make it easier for the dev teams to find public jailbreaks for each version of iOS 6 going forward.

Verizon iPhone 5 won’t ever be locked, most likely due to FCC agreements

Verizon is not going to re-lock the iPhone 5, according to a report today from the AP:

NEW YORK (AP) — Verizon Wireless said Monday that it won’t prevent its version of the iPhone 5 from being used on AT&T’s network. The Verizon version of the iPhone 5, which went on sale Friday, came with an unexpected feature: it works on the network of AT&T and many other phone companies [including T-Mobile], as well as on Verizon’s. It’s the first time Verizon, the country’s largest cellphone company, has sold a phone that works on competing U.S. networks with no complicated hacking, or “unlocking,” procedures.

But, does Big Red even have that option? Verizon tends to do everything possible to lock customers in, and allowing AT&T customers to use the handset is totally against everything it stands for. A Howard Forums poster notes that when Verizon purchased its 700MHz spectrum a few years ago, which it would eventually use for LTE, the carrier told the Federal Communications Commission it would not lock phones that used this network as part of the deal.

I’ve been reading up on the open access provisions in regards to the C-Block of 700 mhz LTE spectrum. There is a very specific line saying that a licensee(Verizon) cannot configure devices to be locked against use on another network. This means that Verizon would be violating Federal law if the iPhone 5′s sim slot is even partially locked. Unlike on the iPhone 4S – these regulations mean that Verizon must even allow an AT&T sim card to be used in any Verizon iPhone 5.

The relevant law is found here in the Code of Federal Regulations
Title 47 – Telecommunication. CHAPTER I – FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION (CONTINUED). SUBCHAPTER B – COMMON CARRIER SERVICES. PART 27 – MISCELLANEOUS WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS SERVICES. Subpart B – Applications and Licenses. § 27.16Network access requirements for Block C in the 746-757 and 776-787 MHz bands.

Take a look at this : (e) Handset locking prohibited. No licensee may disable features on handsets it provides to customers, to the extent such features are compliant with the licensee’s standards pursuant to paragraph (b)of this section, nor configure handsets it provides to prohibit use of such handsets on other providers’ networks.

The one caveat is that Verizon iPhones cannot utilize LTE on AT&T’s network, but it will be able to use T-Mobile’s 2G and new 1900MHz 4G network.

This is the first jailbroken iPhone 5

Unless Mossberg or Pogue knocked it last week, @Chpwn (Grant Paul) has the first jailbroken iPhone 5 which he posted to his Twitter account a few minutes ago. It is usually common courtesy to give Apple devices 24 hours before Jailbreaking but someone apparently couldn’t help themselves. More below:

Here’s the Cydia homepage on the iPhone 5:

iPhone Dev-Team Releases RedSn0w and PwnageTool Updates to Jailbreak iOS 5.1.1

The iPhone Dev-Team has released updates to PwnageTool, RedSn0w, and CInject that bring support for the iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak.

RedSn0w
redsn0w allows owners of A4+earlier devices to install rocky-racoon two different ways:
● backup/restore method similar to Absinthe and cinject
● its traditional limera1n-based ramdisk install. If you have a lot of media on your A4 device (music, movies, TV shows, etc), then the ramdisk method is preferrred because it avoids any possibility of later problems related to syncing to iCloud (including Photo Stream and Music Match). The ramdisk method is not available for A5 devices or later because limera1n can't be used. If you'd like to use redsn0w's ramdisk method, just be sure to put the A4 device in DFU or Recovery mode before starting redsn0w (otherwise it will immediately start to use the backup/restore method).

We've also added a new redsn0w feature specifically for those who got in on the SAM unlock: you can now include your SAM tickets as part of your initial ramdisk jailbreak of iPhone4 or earlier, or alternatively you can upload your SAM tickets to any device after its been jailbroken. redsn0w accepts either the individual SAM activation ticket plist file, or the entire zip file created by redsn0w's "Backup" button. As usual, redsn0w continues to cover all of its previous jailbreaks and untethers (so redsn0w-0.9.12b1 covers everything from 5.1.1 all the way back to 4.1).

PwnageTool
PwnageTool also avoids any possible sync issues, but again it applies only to A4+earlier devices. If you unlock your iPhone with ultrasn0w or a commercial method, you must use PwnageTool to avoid updating your baseband otherwise you'll lose the unlock. PwnageTool will also jailbreak+untether the AppleTV2,1 5.0_2B206f (unless you customize the IPSW further, you'll have just basic SSH access to the device).

Contributions:
If you'd like to contribute to those that actually developed rocky-racoon, please visit here (any other links you may see are not going to the actual rocky-racoon developers, they're being diverted to other "related" or fraudulent accounts).

This particular jailbreak brought an unusual amount of fanfare and hoopla to the table, including "press releases" and other haughty silliness. We'd just like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that jailbreaking is about freedom, not fame and donations!

Rocky Racoon Package Untethers Your Previously Tethered Jailbreak

The Chronic Dev-Team has released Rocky Racoon 5.1.1, a package in Cydia that will untether your device if it is currently running a tethered jailbreak of iOS 5.1.1.

Rocky Racoon is the underlying untethered exploit that will be installed by popular jailbreak tools such as redsn0w and absinthe... if you are using 5.1.1 and you can reboot your device and have it still be jailbroken, you have Rocky Racoon.

If you device relies on Rocky Racoon for untethering, which includes nay iPad 2, iPad 3, or iPhone 4S running 5.1.1., uninstalling this package will unjailbreak your device.

You can install Rocky Racoon from the System section in Cydia.

Quick Info Sheet for iOS 5.1.1 Untethered Jailbreak

MuscleNerd from the iPhone Dev-Team has posted some details on the upcoming untethered jailbreak from pod2g.

---
● All info below is tentative and subject to last minute refinements

● @pod2g's 5.1.1 jailbreak+untether is working out great. All devices are covered except for AppleTV3,1, which currently has no path for jailbreaking.
- the initial 5.1.1 plan used a kernel exploit from @westbaer which unfortunately precluded use in iPod3,1 and iPhone2,1
- @planetbeing stepped up and provided a kernel exploit that covers both of those. Those two JBers are the bomb!

● The 5.1.1 A5 JB is very similar to the A5 5.0.1 JB. @pimskeks has done a tremendous job supporting both 5.0.1 and 5.1.1 in absinthe

● Similar to 5.0.1, there will also be a 5.1.1 CLI "cinject" binary and redsn0w version of the 5.1.1 JB+untether. Absinthe, cinject, and redsn0w will all provide the same JB in different fashions.
- timing is indeterminate. Plans are for this week, but a number of factors can influence that.

● For those wishing to donate, we've set up a new 5.1.1 paypal URL: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=4U6DQGJ2NRVUN

Please don't pirate AppStore apps (seriously, please do not).
---

The jailbreak is set for release very shortly. You can check out the video below and follow Limerain on @limerain_com, Facebook page , or RSS to be notified of the jailbreak's release.

Pod2g Makes Progress With A5 Jailbreak, Release Could Come in a Week!

Pod2g has just tweeted some interesting information regarding the A5 jailbreak. Apparently, pod2g has made good progress on the jailbreak for A5 devices and claims that if lucky, we could expect it in a week!

I made a step today for the A5. With some luck we could expect a release in a week.

Keep in mind though, there are still some roadblocks ahead and the ETA can always get pushed back. In the meantime, you can jailbreak any pre-A5 device on 5.0.1 using our jailbreak tutorial page located here.

We will keep you updated on the A5 jailbreak as well. You can follow us on @limerain_com, Facebook page , RSS.

How to Perform an Untethered Jailbreak of Your iPhone 4 Windows 5.0.1

These are instructions on how to perform an untethered jailbreak of your iPhone 4 on 5.0.1 using RedSn0w for Windows. The Mac version of this tutorial is here.

This procedure will cause you to upgrade your baseband potentially ruining your chances for an unlock. Please follow a Windows tutorial on how to update to iOS 5.0.1 using a custom ipsw if you need an unlock.

If you want to jailbreak a lower firmware version you can find the appropriate tutorial here.

Step One
Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage

Download the latest version of RedSn0w from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the 5.0.1 firmware from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. (Note: you do not need to download the 5.0.1 firmware if you are already on iOS 5.0.1)

Extract the RedSn0w zip file by double clicking it.

Step Two: (You can skip this step if iOS 5 is already installed on your device)
Connect your iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes.

Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down Shift and click the Restore button. Restore is preferred as it won't create any wasted space on your iPhone.

Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the 5.0 firmware ipsw. Click the Choose button to continue.

iTunes will now update your iPhone to the new firmware.

Step Three
Launch the redsn0w application from the redsn0w folder we extracted earlier.

**Windows 7 users may want to try running the redsn0w executable mode as an administrator in Windows Vista compatibility. You can do this by right clicking the executable and selecting Properties from the contextual menu.

Step Four
Once RedSn0w opens click the Jailbreak button

Step Five
Plug your iPhone into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button

Step Six
RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode. You can find more help with DFU mode here

Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.

Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.

Step Seven
Your iPhone will now reboot

Step Eight
RedSn0w will now prepare the jailbreak data.

Step Nine
Select Cydia from the list of options and click Next.

Step Ten
Your iPhone will now be rebooted again and RedSn0w will begin uploading the new RAM Disk and Kernel.

Step Eleven
Once this is complete you will be notified that RedSn0w is done. When your iPhone finishes rebooting (5 minutes or so) it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.

*As usual a big thanks to the iPhone Dev-Team, Pod2g, and Geohot for their hard work and contribution to the iPhone community.

Unlock Your iPhone 4S Without Jailbreaking?

A new unlock method has surfaced today which claims to work without the need of any software, hardware or jailbreak.

A bug in iOS 5 discovered by Michael Capozzi theoretically allows any iPhone 4S to be unlocked to any GSM carrier. However, Capozzi says he was only able to test with T-Mobile.

We are currently working towards independent confirmation of his method. It does require you to have an active T-Mobile SIM card (with data working). Remember it must be cut to micro-SIM size to fit the iPhone 4S.

The Steps:
● Insert original carrier AT&T SIM card
● Dial 611 for AT&T customer service hotline and drop the call
● Turn on Airplane Mode
● Take out AT&T SIM card
● Insert T-Mobile SIM card
● Make sure WiFi is off ( also tap on 'Forget this Network" to make sure it doesn't connect automatically later)
● Switch off Airplane Mode and iPhone will search for network. This is followed by the Apple splash screen appearing.
● Activation Required will be displayed on the screen
● EDGE network will activate automatically – notice the 'E' on the top left corner of the screen
● Wait for about 20-30 seconds and turn off the phone
● Turn on iPhone and the same Activation Required screen will be displayed
● When you see one signal bar, tap on Use Cellular Connection
● Eject SIM card
● Activation Required screen will be displayed the second time
● Insert SIM card
● Unlocked!

We are getting some confirmation reports. If you are able to test this, please let us know your results. Remember this method may unlock your device; however, it will not last through a reboot. So while not practical for day to day use. It may benefit those traveling abroad.

Update:
Gizmodo is claiming some confirmation as well.

iCloud wizard shows up in 10.7.2 Server

Reader Drew sent along these images of an iCloud setup wizard that came up after the latest 10.7.2 installation on Mac OS Server. We haven’t seen these before so we are posting:

It is notable that these appeared in Server rather than the client setup. This is likely what users who upgrade to 10.7.2 will see when they upgrade…as early as tomorrow. Two more wizard shots below:
