Planetbeing, MuscleNerd, and P0sixninja Help Pod2g With A5 Untethered Jailbreak

Pod2g has announced that Planetbeing, MuscleNerd, and P0sixninja have joined his effort to release an untethered jailbreak of the iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

@planetbeing, the legendary hacker behind iPhone Linux and lot of jailbreaks has joined the A5 research! The famous @MuscleNerd, the leader of the iPhone Dev Team, who did a lot of tests for Corona and whom integrated it and made it simple in redsn0w is willing to help also. And last, but not least @p0sixninja, the leader of the Chronic Dev Team, and my partner for years on iPhone security research has started to code and fuzz the Apple sandbox.

We now have a dream team to find a path for a public release of the A5 jailbreak. Cross your fingers.

Yesterday, pod2g posted a FAQ on why the A5 jailbreak had not been released yet. The key reason being that the exploit used to inject the untethering files to the 4S relies on having a developer account.

With the help of planetbeing, MuscleNerd, and p0sixninja, pod2g is hoping to find a distributable exploit to remount the system partition read/write and to set Corona files at the correct places.

Pod2g Posts FAQ on iPhone 4S and iPad 2 Untethered Jailbreak

Pod2g has posted on his blog to answer some questions about the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 untethered jailbreak.

How could pod2g have an untethered 4S and dev teams still haven't released tools to achieve this at home ?
The exploit I used to inject the untethering files to the 4S relies on having a developer account, and can't be released publicly. It's the same reason why @MuscleNerd has an iPad 2 tethered jailbreak but couldn't distribute it. So, we need to find a distributable exploit to remount the system partition read/write and to set Corona files at the correct places.

Why A4 version of Corona was easier to release ?
Because a tethered jailbreak is a good way to install Corona!

Why don't you do a tethered jailbreak then ?
A tethered jailbreak also relies on an exploitable vulnerability that we still haven't found yet !

Earlier this week, pod2g posted that he had made good progress on the jailbreak for A5 devices and said with some luck we could expect a release in a week.

Pod2g Makes Progress With A5 Jailbreak, Release Could Come in a Week!

Pod2g has just tweeted some interesting information regarding the A5 jailbreak. Apparently, pod2g has made good progress on the jailbreak for A5 devices and claims that if lucky, we could expect it in a week!

I made a step today for the A5. With some luck we could expect a release in a week.

Keep in mind though, there are still some roadblocks ahead and the ETA can always get pushed back. In the meantime, you can jailbreak any pre-A5 device on 5.0.1 using our jailbreak tutorial page located here.

We will keep you updated on the A5 jailbreak as well. You can follow us on @limerain_com, Facebook page , RSS.

Pod2g Demos Untethered iOS 5.0.1 Jailbreak on the iPhone 4

Pod2g has posted a video demonstrating an untethered jailbreak of iOS 5.0.1 on the iPhone 4.

Here is a new video demo of the current status of the 5.0.1 jailbreak running on an iPhone 4. This is meant to reassure people that were thinking it only works on older iPods.

The jailbreak is near ready for prime time (excluding 4S and iPad 2). Patches are the same as redsn0w's. Expect the same level of stability. Some more days to wait. Be patient, we're doing our best.

As usual you can follow us on @limerain_com, Facebook page , and RSS to be notified of any progress updates.

Update on the Untethered Jailbreak for the iPhone 4S

Pod2g has issued an update on the progress of the untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 4S.

For those who haven't been tracking his progress, last week pod2g successfully untethered the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod 4G, iPod 3G, iPad 1, and Apple TV 2 (4.4.3). He has now turned his attention to the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2.

Here are the news of the 4S week-end. The untether fails right now because I'm having processor cache issues. I'm close, but I can't figure out what happens. It certainly has something to do with the Cortex-A9 cache management.

I could sort it out quick, it's a matter of chance. I'll report you my progress tomorrow.

As usual we will keep you up to date with the latest. You can follow Us via @limerain_com, Facebook page , or RSS.

Progress Report on the iOS 5.0.1 Untethered Jailbreak

Pod2g has issued a new progress report on the iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak in which he reveals that the jailbreak for old devices is being packaged for release.

Thanks to donators, pod2g has received enough financial support to purchase an iPhone 4S and iPad 2 and will soon start working on the jailbreak for those devices.

---
Hello my friends,I know that I've been silent yesterday and that it was annoying.

Sorry for this, but I had to organize things for the release.
Also, I've tested iPad 1 and it worked.
Today I hope I can test a 3Gs.

BTW: please don't propose to be a beta tester because I'm too paranoid, fearing leaks.

Now the time to finalize the jailbreak for old devices, fix some stability issues and package the whole. That will take some days.

In the meanwhile, I'm starting the research for iPad 2 and 4S.I'll take you informed of my progress.

Finally, I want to thank all who donated. I now can buy both devices! I don't know what to say.

Thank you very much my friends.
---

Stay tuned to Limerain on @limerain_com, Facebook page , or RSS for news on when the jailbreak will be released.

Unlock Your iPhone 4S Without Jailbreaking?

A new unlock method has surfaced today which claims to work without the need of any software, hardware or jailbreak.

A bug in iOS 5 discovered by Michael Capozzi theoretically allows any iPhone 4S to be unlocked to any GSM carrier. However, Capozzi says he was only able to test with T-Mobile.

We are currently working towards independent confirmation of his method. It does require you to have an active T-Mobile SIM card (with data working). Remember it must be cut to micro-SIM size to fit the iPhone 4S.

The Steps:
● Insert original carrier AT&T SIM card
● Dial 611 for AT&T customer service hotline and drop the call
● Turn on Airplane Mode
● Take out AT&T SIM card
● Insert T-Mobile SIM card
● Make sure WiFi is off ( also tap on 'Forget this Network" to make sure it doesn't connect automatically later)
● Switch off Airplane Mode and iPhone will search for network. This is followed by the Apple splash screen appearing.
● Activation Required will be displayed on the screen
● EDGE network will activate automatically – notice the 'E' on the top left corner of the screen
● Wait for about 20-30 seconds and turn off the phone
● Turn on iPhone and the same Activation Required screen will be displayed
● When you see one signal bar, tap on Use Cellular Connection
● Eject SIM card
● Activation Required screen will be displayed the second time
● Insert SIM card
● Unlocked!

We are getting some confirmation reports. If you are able to test this, please let us know your results. Remember this method may unlock your device; however, it will not last through a reboot. So while not practical for day to day use. It may benefit those traveling abroad.

Update:
Gizmodo is claiming some confirmation as well.

Apple sells out of iPhone 4S pre-orders, now shipping in 1-2 weeks

This happened internationally earlier in the day, but now Apple has sold out of its U.S. iPhone 4S pre-order allotment. Customers who are interested in ordering an iPhone 4S from the Apple Online Store can still order, but the shipments are said to arrive in 1-2 weeks. The one week likely means just a little after the October 14th launch, and the two weeks would be right around October 21st.

iPhone 4S Wants to Kill You video

Siri, the new virtual assistant installed in every iPhone 4S, is a technical wonder. Powered by vocal commands, users can verbally ask their device questions and request specific tasks, and Siri obeys their every word. Ask, "What's the weather like in Phoenix?" and Siri spits back a forecast. Request a reminder to call your wife when you leave work, and Siri's right on top of that.

But should Siri begin to sound like GLaDOS -- the malevolent, yet even-tempered AI villain in the Portal series -- then it's time to grab your Companion Cube and run!

In this parody video, Siri is replaced with GLaDOS and suddenly, the users' tasks, questions, and life become utterly insignificant. Their weight, however, is subject to much mockery.

Wheatley implementation hopefully forthcoming.

AT&T has 200,000 iPhone 4S pre-orders in just first 12 hours of sales Updated

Apple’s long term carrier parter AT&T has announced that they have processed 200,000 pre-orders for the iPhone 4S, making the new Apple smartphone the most successfully launched iPhone yet. These 200,000 orders only come during the first 12 hours of sales, which started around midnight. Notably, these are just AT&T’s numbers and don’t include Apple’s own online pre-orders or the orders through Apple’s other U.S. carrier partners, Verizon Wireless and Sprint.

AT&T has seen extraordinary demand for iPhone 4S with more than 200,000 preorders in the first 12 hours alone, the most successful iPhone launch we’ve ever had. It’s obvious customers like AT&T’s 4G network, which is the only one that lets their iPhone download twice as fast and talk and surf simultaneously.
The iPhone 4S officially launches on Friday, October 14th and features a substantial internal upgrade from the iPhone 4. This includes the dual-core A5 processor from the iPad 2, a re-designed camera system with an eight megapixel back sensor and an improved optics system, improved battery life, and of course the headlining integration of Siri artificial intelligence technology. This 200,000 pre-order number for AT&T can be compared to 600,000 total pre-orders (on all carriers) on day one of iPhone 4 pre-orders last year.

Update: Sprint has sold out of the 16GB iPhone 4S.

iPhone 4S will be faster only on AT&T, unlimited on Sprint, but maybe not interchangeable

Today’s iPhone 4S launch, while bringing a consolidated single phone to three US carriers, also presents some complexities. Some observations:

Probably obvious to some: The 14.4 speed increase is only on AT&T where that speed is actually available. Verizon and Sprint will continue to be at their same 3G speeds. They will also continue to have other CDMA limitations like being cut off of data when talking.
If you buy a Verizon iPhone 4S, you may not be able to head across the street to Sprint with your phone. And vice versa. Phone companies lock their devices so that you can’t move carriers as easy and it appears at first glance that the iPhone 4S won’t be an exception.
IF you have a Verizon or Sprint iPhone 4S, you likely will still be able to stick an international SIM card in your phone while travelling. However, will AT&T work in a VZ or Sprint iPhone? Unlikely.
Sprint is also getting the iPhone 4 but AT&T still has an exclusive on the iPhone 3GS in the US. If you factor in the costs of owning a phone for two years, the $100-200 saved up front is a drop in the bucket.
Sprint is the only US carrier offering truly unlimited data plans. From personal experience, Sprint offers great data connectivity, especially in big cities. It will be interesting to see how that network holds up as 30 million iPhones get onto Sprint’s network over the next four years.

*thanks 9to5mac*

Apple executives knew Jobs’ condition at iPhone 4S Launch

According to Palo Alto police department spokeswoman Sandra Brown (via Bloomberg), Apple executives may have known Steve Jobs’ condition at the time of the iPhone 4S launch event. Apple informed police that Steve Jobs passing was close, days before Apple’s official statement confirming he had passed.

As a result of the meeting, police apparently put plans in place for officers to patrol Jobs’ home after the news of his passing had broke. Of course this was to keep crowds under control when Jobs’ supporters inevitably visited his home following the news. From the report:

The Apple representatives told the police department there was “a possibility that it could happen this week,” Brown said in a phone interview. “It’s common sense for us to work together. If you think about who he was and his contribution to the world, people might come out in masses.”
Apple was apparently supposed to inform police of his death before issuing a public statement, but according to Brown, police found out through Apple’s press release on October 5th.

According to the WSJ, Jobs’ funeral is today.

Many have speculated that the empty chair marked “Reserved” next to Apple execs at the recent iPhone 4S unveiling may have been a silent tribute to Jobs. Long time Jobs confidant Jony Ive (they were so close many called the two ‘Jive’) was notably absent from the event.

Cook, Cue, Schiller and Forstall, though subdued, were nevertheless somehow able to put on a great show in the face of knowing their mentor and boss for over a decade was in bad condition.

AT&T plans a “4G upgrade” for the iPhone in name only

Perhaps looking to differentiate its service from the other two US carriers, AT&T is working with Apple to get a “4G” icon on the iPhone 4S when it hits its HSPA+ network according to The Verge.

The move would seem to try to further differentiate AT&T’s network which is already significantly faster than Sprint or Verizon’s (and theoretically double the iPhone 4 speed).

If you are in the US, which network will you be getting an iPhone 4S on, vote on our poll on the side panel...

Apple unveils the iPhone 4S

Apple’s Phil Schiller has just announced the iPhone 4S, which is both GSM and CDMA compatible, sports the new A5 chip, a redesigned 8-megapixel camera system, and dual core graphics up to 7 times faster than the previous iPhone. Full details below.

As 9to5Mac predicted, the iPhone 4S will be available in 16GB ($199), 32GB ($299), and 64GB ($399) models. Pre-orders start on October 7th followed by a public release on the 14th of October in US, Canada, Australia, the UK, France, Germany, and Japan. Twenty-two more countries will get the device on the 28th followed by over 70 countries by the end of the year.

As part of the new camera system, you can now record 1080p HD video with real-time video image stabilization, and real-time temporal noise reduction. The new iPhone also includes a redesigned camera system that includes a new sensor and 8-megapixels for 60% more pixels than in the iPhone 4 camera. There is also a hybrid IR filter for “better color accuracy” and “more color uniformity”, and a 5 element lens resulting in 30% more sharpness. Schiller also notes face detection and improved white balance.

“We have an amazing lens system, five lens elements. It’s now a really wide f2.4. Compared to most point and shoots we can let in a lot of light.”

Vodafone Germany mentions 16/32/64GB iPhone 4S, 8GB iPhone 4

Following a questionable list of iPhone 5 specs seen on the website of carrier Cincinnati Bell and iPhone 5 references that surfaced in Radio Shack’s inventory system, the German branch of British multinational carrier Vodafone – which in the United States has a 45% ownership stake in Verizon Wireless – references the yet unreleased 8GB iPhone 4 model in addition to the rumored iPhone 4S.

Specifically, as first reported by iPhone-Ticker.de, the 8GB iPhone 4 model is being referenced on the carrier’s online store, available in black and white. Last month, Reuters reported that suppliers are building the 8GB iPhone 4 model which the news gathering organization claimed was the inexpensive iPhone the rumor-mill’s been hyping about.

In addition, the site makes mention of the black and white iPhone 4S, each in 16/32/64GB flavors, confirming the findings of 9to5Mac’s Mark Gurman. As for the Vodafone Germany, remember they are Apple’s high-profile partner that carries the iPhone 4 in Germany alongside Deutsche Telekom-owned T-Mobile. To get a clearer picture of the next iPhone, check out our exhaustive overview of late rumors and what we’re expecting from tomorrow’s presser.
