Excellent Apple TV/iPanel Concept Video

Check out this excellent concept video by Sam Beckett that details how an Apple television might work.

The overall idea of the concept demonstrates how an iPad or iPad Mini could be paired, (via bluetooth) to an Apple TV set-top box or TV screen panel. User input would either be by multitouch (on the tablet), or with Siri voice commands.

The video talks through how interacting with the television would work. Take a look below.

iOS 6.1 Jailbreak to Support All 22 Device Variations

MuscleNerd, a popular hacker and member of the evad3rs, has revealed that the upcoming iOS 6.1 jailbreak will support all 22 device variations and likely the atv2.

@MuscleNerd is every other device supported?

@unicornhacker yes, every other 6.1 device variation will be supported. All TWENTY-TWO of them (omg!). Plus atv2 if it's out in time.

Unfortunately, with the exploit that's being used, the Apple TV 3 will not be supported.

@MuscleNerd @evad3rs_jb So those of us with atv3 still have to wait for a bootrom

@arovik not necessarily. Although atv3 uses far fewer services that can be tampered with, it's not isolated. But it can't use this next JB

As announced by pod2g, the team is waiting for iOS 6.1 final to drop before releasing their jailbreak. Apple recently released iOS 6.1 'Beta 5'. Interestingly, this build is not really a beta but a publicly releasable build.

Update on the Untethered Jailbreak for the iPhone 4S

Pod2g has issued an update on the progress of the untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 4S.

For those who haven't been tracking his progress, last week pod2g successfully untethered the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod 4G, iPod 3G, iPad 1, and Apple TV 2 (4.4.3). He has now turned his attention to the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2.

Here are the news of the 4S week-end. The untether fails right now because I'm having processor cache issues. I'm close, but I can't figure out what happens. It certainly has something to do with the Cortex-A9 cache management.

I could sort it out quick, it's a matter of chance. I'll report you my progress tomorrow.

As usual we will keep you up to date with the latest. You can follow Us via @limerain_com, Facebook page , or RSS.

Progress Report on the iOS 5.0.1 Untethered Jailbreak

Pod2g has issued a new progress report on the iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak in which he reveals that the jailbreak for old devices is being packaged for release.

Thanks to donators, pod2g has received enough financial support to purchase an iPhone 4S and iPad 2 and will soon start working on the jailbreak for those devices.

---
Hello my friends,I know that I've been silent yesterday and that it was annoying.

Sorry for this, but I had to organize things for the release.
Also, I've tested iPad 1 and it worked.
Today I hope I can test a 3Gs.

BTW: please don't propose to be a beta tester because I'm too paranoid, fearing leaks.

Now the time to finalize the jailbreak for old devices, fix some stability issues and package the whole. That will take some days.

In the meanwhile, I'm starting the research for iPad 2 and 4S.I'll take you informed of my progress.

Finally, I want to thank all who donated. I now can buy both devices! I don't know what to say.

Thank you very much my friends.
---

Stay tuned to Limerain on @limerain_com, Facebook page , or RSS for news on when the jailbreak will be released.

Untethered Jailbreak Completed for iPhone 4/3GS, iPod Touch 4G/3G, iPad 1, ATV 2 iPhone 4s and iPad 2 I in te works

Pod2g has announced the completion of an untethered iOS 5.0.1 jailbreak of the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod 4G, iPod 3G, iPad 1, and Apple TV 2 (4.4.3).

Previously, pod2g said that he would work on jailbreaking the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 after finishing the jailbreaks for the above devices.

Tons of questions from my nice followers. Too early to answer. Will work on iOS 5.0.1, will try iPad 2 and 4S after others are ready.

Let's hope he is successful with the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 as well. Stay tuned to Limerain on Twitter, Facebook, or RSS for news on when jailbreak will be released.

Is Siri coming to your television?

Siri, an intelligent voice-controlled personal assistant which debuted with the iPhone 4S, could come to your big screen television via Apple’s set-top box. The evidence is inconclusive at this point, but clues exist pointing in this direction. For starters, Cross Research analyst Shannon Cross speculated about Siri on the Apple TV in her note to clients last week, observing (via Fortune’s Apple 2.0 blog):

One interesting application of the Siri technology would be with Apple TV (either the existing device or actual TV’s that Apple may launch). We think this would solve the industry’s difficulties with remote controls… We think it would be very compelling to own a TV or a device that could quickly answer the request, “I want to watch the Yankees/Red Sox game,” by changing the TV channel without requiring the user to look at a guide or use a remote control, or even specifying HD or standard definition feeds, since you would want the HD channel if available. Or, you could instruct the device to record all new episodes of a show, without leaving the program you are currently watching. Finally, since you are online, a Siri enabled TV could answer whether your iPhone or computer has received a new message, and let you respond accordingly.
I know what you’re thinking… Analysts, they also predicted flying cars, right? But if Apple were to bring the Siri functionality into their set top-box, they would need to issue a hardware refresh because the current-generation Apple TV powered by the A4 processor lacks oomph to run Siri. As 9to5Mac discovered on Friday, the Apple TV 3,1 reference in the iOS file system indicates a major hardware refresh for the device. While references to devices that have never come to fruition had previously appeared in the iOS code, this one comes from a file that Apple uses to activate unreleased devices in testing. If Apple is testing a new Apple TV with the A5 chip, it would indicate full HD 1080P video playback and – although this is a stretch – the possibility of voice-controlled input powered by Siri. Think telling your Apple TV to search for movies from 2010 starring Tom Cruise, play four stars-rated songs by Bob Dylan, serve up weather information, compare stocks, rate an episode of a TV show you’re watching, asking “who directed this movie” and so forth. And while we’re at it…

Apple outs more powerful Apple TV (dual-core A5?) in iOS 5 file system

We’ve been hoping for a new Apple TV since Apple began transitioning its iOS device lineup to dual-core A5 processors, and we now have some compelling evidence for a next-generation Apple TV being in the works. Deep inside the iOS 5 file system is a reference to a Apple TV 3,1. This would be an upgrade from the current Apple TV’s 2,1 marking. The number changing from 2 to 3 represents major changes, and with the Apple TV recently gaining a fully re-designed case, we expect this upgrade to mainly consist of internal changes.

In all likelihood, this new Apple TV will gain some of internal power from the iPhone 4S and iPad 2: the dual-core A5 chip and maybe a boost in the RAM department. The Apple TV 3,1 reference comes from a file that Apple uses to activate unreleased devices that are in testing; furthermore this Apple 3,1 is already in testing stages. A dual-core Apple TV will likely mean 1080P video playback, a current restriction due to the current model’s A4 processor. We will also likely see some 1080P iTunes content to come along with this next-generation model’s new abilities.

Although this model has turned up in the iOS 5 file system, we must warn that devices that never have come to fruition have also shown up in the iOS file system; namely an iPhone 3,2 and an iPod touch 4,2. These devices have been characterized as internal development units, but with previous rumors pointing to an A5, 1080P capable Apple TV, we’d say this Apple TV 3,1 becoming a reality is very likely. Also lookout for an Apple TV with bluetooth in the near future.

*thanks 9to5mac*

How to Dump the SHSH Blobs of Your Current Firmware Using iFaith

These are instructions on how to dump the SHSH blobs of your current firmware even if Apple is not signing.

For instance, you can dump the SHSH of the current firmware on your device, so long as the device is susceptible to the Limera1n jailbreak (Everything but the iPad 2) Apple does not have to be signing the SHSH in order for you to dump the blob.

*Note the iPod Touch 2G and iPhone 3G will not work since they will always be jailbreakable. The iPad 2 will not work because it is not susceptible to Limera1n. A jailbreak is not needed for this.

Step One
Download the iFaith from here.

Step Two
Extract the downloaded zip file, and double click the iFaith.exe file.

Step Three
A disclaimer will appear. Read the notice and click ok to proceed.

Step Four
Click the Dump SHSH Blobs button

Step Five
Read the information and click Proceed when you are ready.

Finally, click the Let's Go! button to start the dumping process.

Step Six
If you are dumping an Apple TV 2, indicate it when iFaith asks you

Step Seven
Follow the DFU Instructions to place your device in DFU Mode. You can find more on entering DFU mode here.

Press Power and home for 10 Seconds

Release the power button, but keep holding the Home

Once Successful, iFaith will dump the SHSH of your current firmware. It will go through each step which could take a few minutes.

Step Eight
When completed, iFaith will ask you where to locally save the SHSH.

Indicate where you want to save the SHSH file.

Step Nine
iFaith will notify you that the process was successful

*thanks iclarified*

iH8sn0w Announces iFaith-The SHSH Dumper [Update]

After weeks of anticipation, iH8sn0w has announced iFaith, the SHSH dumper. iFaith will allow users to dump the SHSH of the current firmware on the device, even if Apple is not signing. For example, if your device is on 4.0 and you want the blobs, you can use this program to rip, or dump the blobs from the device.

It is important to note that this only works if your device is susceptible to the Limera1n jailbreak (everything but iPad 2). The iPod Touch 2G and iPhone 3G are also not compatible simply because there is no need for them (latest firmware is always jailbreakable). In short, iFaith allows you to:

● Dumps SHSH Blobs
● Build *signed* IPSW with dumped SHSH blobs
● Submits dumped SHSH blobs to remote server for backup.

iFaith will be released within the hour for Windows. Mac version will be out in a few weeks. The device does not have to be jailbroken, but does have to be on the firmware of the blob you want to dump.

Update: You can download iFaith here. A tutorial is available here.

Analysts see Apple-branded television set in 2012 that does games, DVR, FaceTime and more

I know what you’re thinking – analysts, right? While it’s true many “analysts” can’t tell their arse from their elbow, some predictions are worth observing. Katy Huberty with Morgan Stanley is again risking her credibility by re-iterating that Apple will take on television market with a new product category expected in the 2012-2013 time frame. She code-named it a Smart TV, a full-fledged networked television with the shiny Apple logo on it. Checks with Asian component suppliers suggest Apple is developing a Smart TV prototype, says her Friday note to clients.

She’s calling for an intelligent set converging regular TV features with DVR capabilities, gaming and – why not – FaceTime video calling. In other words, an oversized iPad for your living room. Her wish list echoes that of Gene Munster who opined numerous times how Apple is best poised to take the emerging connected television market by surprise with an Apple-branded HDTV set. Billions are potentially up for grabs in this market, Huberty warns.

If Apple captures just one percent share of the television market by 2013, it can expect $4 billion of additional revenues, Huberty wrote. It’s not immediately clear how Apple might innovate and how exactly the company expects to price-match inexpensive TV sets from Samsung and LG, especially given Apple buys its flat panels from these rivals. Maybe a Retina Display Smart TV would do the trick?

iOS 4.3 Untethered Jailbreak Will Likely Be Released This Week

i0n1c has announced that he will likely release his untether for the iOS 4.3 jailbreak before next weekend.

Because of several changes in iOS 4.3 in comparison to iOS 4.2.1 the jailbreak is NOT READY yet. That is what the *ALPHA* means. I need some time to check what kernel patches are actually required to work 100%ly.

However I recommend the dev-team or chronic-dev to first release a *tethered* iOS 4.3 so that everyone can test if their nice feature actually work. I guess most people require Mobile Substrate to work and AFAIK it does not work due to ASLR. It would be a waste if Apple kills an untethered jailbreak before Mobile Substrate works.

That said I will release the jailbreak when a) there is no other untether by the time I am finished b) if MobileSubstrate works.

Any report that I wait for iOS 4.3.1 is just a misinterpretation of my words.
I merely think that Apple should release a iOS 4.3.1 soon, because it is in their interest to not wait for several months when everyone knows that there is a remote exploit in MobileSafari that might have leaked during the #PWN2OWN contest.
...
I am pretty sure that the untether will be released before the next weekend. I was using older kernel patches that caused lagging on the jailbroken device. I will change that and then port it to the other devices and release.

I0n1c has previously said that his untether will likely end up in RedSn0w. As usual we will keep you up to date with the latest news.

You can watch the untether video below...

Seas0nPass Gets Updated to Jailbreak Apple TV on iOS 4.3

Seas0nPass has been updated to perform a tethered iOS 4.3 jailbreak on the Apple TV.

Seas0nPass has been updated to support a tethered jailbreak of the new AppleTV 4.2 (iOS 4.3) software. Big thanks to @nitoTV, @DjayB6, @p0sixninja and @msft_guy for help getting everything together.

Is aTV Flash (black) Beta3 compatible?
For the most part yes. However, you may see a few oddities with text entry screens in plugins like Couch Surfer and nitoTV. These are relatively minor issues and should be a quick fix.

Additionally there are some hardware decoding issues present in XBMC which will take a bit more work to get right.

Those looking update to iOS 4.3 may want to consider waiting for an untethered jailbreak which has just been discovered.

Apple to Buy $7.8 Billion Worth of Components From Samsung, and will be one of their largest purchased

Apple will reportedly plans to buy $7.8 billion worth of components from Samsung this year, according to the Korea Economic Daily.

The WSJ reports that "the paper also said that Samsung will supply Apple with liquid crystal displays, mobile application processors and NAND flash memory chips used for the U.S. company's iPhones and iPads."

The deal will make Apple Samsung's largest customer.

*thanks iclarified*

IMO Apple should buy out Samsung. This would solve many problems Apple is having, they would save a lot of time and money buying components if they owned some of these companies they purchase from. With Apples close attention to detail as heavily controlling everything that has to do with it's devices, it would only make sense for them to get into the manufacturing of their own devices.
