Shimi is your own personal robot DJ

This is one of our favorite Kickstarter projects seeking funding. An amazing speaker dock with personality!

First of all, Shimi is a high-quality speaker dock. And because we love music as much as you do, we packed Shimi (rhymes with "Jimmy") with high quality 6 Watt speakers and optimized his shape for best sound quality. But that’s just the beginning. Shimi doesn’t just play music, but actually uses your iPhone as his brain to become your own personal robotic musical companion. Not only does Shimi love to move to the music, but he knows and understands what moves you.

Shimi can dance

Shimi has five motors strategically placed, and will dance to the beat of any song using a rich variety of dance moves that fit the specific song and genre. We packed years of our research in expressive robotic movement into an app that makes Shimi groove like nobody’s business.

Shimi can follow you

Using face recognition software, Shimi will always know where you are in the room and point the speakers to you. No matter where you are, Shimi will always deliver the best stereo sound to you.

Shimi can listen

Shimi uses natural language processing to understand and respond to your musical (and other) requests. Shim also uses sophisticated music intelligence algorithms to understand and respond to your rythmic taps and claps and select music with the same rhythm and tempo.

Shimi is more than just what we can imagine

We will keep developing new applications for Shimi. We are already working on applications that will allow Shimi to respond to your facial expression, learn your musical tastes, and recommend new music to you. Expect apps for gaming, education, music making, tele-presence and more, very soon. We are also developing an API to let third-party developers make apps for Shimi.

How you can help

We are a team of roboticists from Georgia Tech, IDC, and the MIT Media Lab, working together for several years in academic settings. We have managed to put together a rockin’ prototype that knocks everyone we show it to off their feet. Even after thousands of hours of developing and demoing Shimi, we still can’t help bobbing our heads and smiling when Shimi starts moving.

In order to be able to share the magic of musical robots with the world, we need to make this prototype into a real product that can be manufactured for a reasonable price.

Specifically, we are now planning to:

Move from the Android-based prototype to the iPhone platform (don't worry, for you Android lovers, we'll launch an Anrdoid version as well)
Redesign Shimi components for low cost and durability
Create tooling and parts to mass produce Shimi
We also want to know if there are enough people out there who want one at home as much as we do.

For that we need your help: if you back our project at the $149 reward level, you will receive one of the first commercially available Shimi robots at a price well below our expected retail price.

Spixi a better way to charge & sync your iPhone and Android

"Introducing Spixi a new kind cable for smartphones. It is slim and sleek- unlike any cable you've seen before.

Spixi features a unique, retracting 2-foot cable made from an eco-friendly thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) that is stronger and more durable than polyvinyl chloride, the commonly used material for cables. Because of TPE's superior characteristics, we can design a thinner cable without sacrificing quality and performance.

Yes, we've heard about iPhone 5

Spixi comes in 3 different connector flavors: iPhone 5 (8-pin), iPhone 4/4S (and previous versions), and Micro-USB (Android, Blackberry, Windows).

The world's FIRST jam-free retractable USB cable for smartphones

A high level of design and quality- is unheard of, in the retractable USB cable world. It's our pleasure to change that.

How big is it really?

Let's take a look.

Product features

A connector like you've never seen before

The connector is sideways. This helps minimize the compactness of the design. Because the connector is oriented on its side, the chance for damaging the connector is greatly reduced.

USB flips up, up, and away

The USB connector folds away. This allows Spixi to maintain it's streamline design so it won't get caught with other items while you're taking it out of your bag.

Stays in shape to impress you

Spixi is slim. So slim that it will not interfere with the other USB ports on your laptop, so you- the user will never have to compromise. It's just slightly wider than your typical USB flash drive.

Made for on-the-go

The case is made of polycarbonate, similar to the macbook chargers. This gives protection to the cable when it is stowed and on-the-go. It will give users peace of mind, knowing that their cable is housed around solid construction.

Let's talk AND charge

Don't sacrifice freedom for portability. The popular emergency and short cables are great for certain situations, however, they put your phone in a paralytic state. Spixi's 2-foot cable is long enough to take calls or open apps comfortably, all while charging and syncing through your laptop.

And here's how you can help

We need to raise $30,000- to make Spixi come to life. The funds raised will be used to cover the tooling costs of the production molds.

A rigorous effort has been made to choose the right supplier for this product. And we're proud to say, that we've found a good match. We've been in communication with Spixi's supplier for the past 6 months, and can confirm that the our high level of quality can be met. They make product for some of the biggest names in technology, so we are confident. The supplier is located in China and we have a planned visit in the coming weeks- very exciting!

If funding is successful by November 1, we plan to ship in February 2013.

Why does it take so long to make?

We are all about transparency, so here is the breakdown: it takes 2 months to make the tooling, about 1 month to produce the units and address production quality, and an additional month for the products to arrive to our shores. So if tooling starts in November, we're looking at February to delivery Spixi to our awesome supporters!

Spixi specs

Dimensions: 2" x 2.25" x 0.75" (50.8mm x 57.2mm x 19.1mm)
Cable Length: 2' (0.61m)
USB 2.0
iPhone 5 Connector: 8-pin
iPhone 4/4S Connector: 30-pin
Android, Blackberry, Windows Connector: Micro-USB
White/Black Edition Materials: Polycarbonate, TPE
Limited/Angel Edition Materials: Anodized Aluminum, Polycarbonate, TPE
We are really proud of our product, and that's why we have a patent pending."

One amazingly simple solution to tangled and torn cables! With a great attention to detail, it is an attractive design(if you can say that about a USB cable, idk).

iPhone 4S cases showing up in retail channels?

Adding some validity to the possibility of a new iPhone branded “4S”, @chronicwire has just posted the images below showing the iPhone 4S branding on what looks like legit packaging for a new Otter Box iPhone case.

Another couple if you head down south. Notice the changed volume buttons that may or may not be indicative of a volume button to camera shutter feature.

LEAK: Photo of the back of the package showing the iPhone 4S case, depicting new volume buttons, and on the right side. New soft-looking volume buttons being on right side of iPhone 4S can probably be attributed to the “volume button to take pic” iOS5 feature
Update (Sept 23rd): TUAW talked to Otterbox who clarified:

She explained that the ad reflected the current conversations going on in the blogosphere. “Like many, we are watching the rumor sites and using information to plan ahead as much as we can.” Otterbox promises support for whatever iPhone debuts, but they’re emphatically not stating or leaking anything further. “We do not have any confidentiality agreements with Apple,” Richardson told TUAW. As for those iPhone 4S Otterbox packaging photos that leaked yesterday, she explained, “What was circulating yesterday was not a case image for the iPhone 4S but a packaging design.” Otterbox has not identified the source of the photos.

South Korean carrier rolling out ‘Apple-certified’ NFC case and service for iPhone

While we might not see NFC integrated by Apple into the iPhone for a generation or two, South Korean carrier KT is taking matters into their own hands and has announced their plans to roll out their own NFC service and accompanying case for the iPhone. The iPhone 4 case is called the iCarte and and was developed by a Canadian company called Wireless Dynamics. A KT executive commented on the plans:

With the recent launch of NFC-enabled smart(phones), iPhone users were showing increasing needs for NFC services, Hyunmi Yang, executive vice president for integrated customer strategy at KT, said in a statement. As a global leader of NFC services, KT plans to provide more convenient and differentiated NFC services to its customers.
This NFC case will give KT iPhone customers the opportunity to finally use their iPhone 4 as their digital wallet. KT’s service will also include a pre-paid “transit card” so users could use their iPhone with the NFC case as their point of payment for transportation. Credit card companies in Korea are expected to jump on board the new iPhone-based service next month. KT says they expect the iPhone to gain an integrated NFC chip next year.

Does Apple have to kill the iPod?

Will the touch turn into an iPhone, the Classic be killed by iCloud and the Shuffle and Nano be morphed into wearable/iWatches?

from Wikipedia, data to Q2 2011

Out of Apple’s incredibly successful product lines, the iPods are the only one dropping numbers and revenue (above, mostly to iPhone and iPad, not the competition). Analysts as well as Apple forecast iPod sales drops close to 20% this quarter over the year ago quarter, which is an acceleration of the previous year to year drop. Apple’s very nature is to only go after lucrative expanding markets so there could be some motivation to cut or revamp the iPod lineup.

There’s been some talk of Apple killing the iPod touch at next month’s iPhone 5 announcement, which happens to be smack dab on top of the release window of every iPod announcement of the past 5 years. The idea is that if a “cheap” iPhone is made to cost less than $300, what is the point of having an iPod touch alongside it only a few bucks cheaper? Indeed, having the iPhone event during the normally scheduled iPod event could indicate some sort of new branding/pairing or at the very least a new release schedule. Interestingly, we’ve heard there are global constraints on iPhone 4 happening globally, but not on iPods ahead of September…

One issue not often talked about the the iPod touch->iPhone transition: You’ll note that Apple designs its iOS products with combination 3G/GPS chips. So, whether it is an iPad or iPod, if it doesn’t have 3G, it doesn’t have real GPS. While Wifi or Cell-based Geo-location is helpful, it doesn’t give as accurate results in nearly as many places (or where there is no wireless). If Apple wants all of its mobile devices to have real GPS (which is becoming super-important for mobile), then it makes sense to throw in that 3G/GPS chip. At that point you have a 3G iPod touch…which is pretty much a cheap iPhone.

iPod refresh coming? – image taken at Walmart in the UK earlier this week

On the other hand, there is a lot of innovation that could still happen in the iPod touch specific areas. The product could get a bigger screen like the rumored high end iPhone 5 and will almost certainly get a faster processor, Making it a gaming monster. IT could morph into a better camera making it a 1080P camera/point and shoot replacement. Perhaps more importantly, iPods could see a significant price drop, to $150 or below.

A big price drop would open up Internet computing to a wider audience, especially in parts of the world where it takes months, not days or weeks, to save $150. I’ve always thought that $100 One Laptop per Child would be best exemplified in a small tablet or iPod type of device. Children have smaller fingers, better eyes, hold devices closer to their eyes and can carry iPods around easier than laptops. Compare a $200 iPod touch with the $200 OLPC – which one is better for kids in developing countries?

Looking at the chart above, however, the iPod brand is fading and the iPod touch is the most successful of the current iPod line. If Apple is to kill the touch, then it might want to axe the line altogether…

Classic:

The iPod Classic’s writing is on the wall. Literally-> . At the iPod event last year, Steve Jobs said that they were redesigning “every model” of iPod. Yet the iPod Classic didn’t even get a spec update (R&D=null). With the release of iCloud and Wifi synching, the Classic becomes even more of a relic. So the Classic is the easiest to do away with. Apple is probably just selling through last year’s stock at this point.

Shuffle/Nano

The Shuffle’s strength is its price tag. You can get into Apple’s music ecosystem for just $49. However, with Apple rumored to be offering a low-priced iPhone that could end up free with a carrier subsidy, that’s pretty much a moot point. Especially since if you are an Apple user, you’ll likely have an iPhone.

Also, a lower-priced Nano is what people who don’t want to lug an iPhone around really want. At $149-179, the current Nano is priced way too high (you can pick up a last generation iPod touch for the same price). Just like the current shuffle, the current Nano is probably not selling well (again, chart above).

But Apple is just one generation into the new Nano OS and there is still significant potential there. Apple scrapped the Portal Player derived OS last year when it went to the pared down Touch-OS based Nano, but it also killed the ability to make and watch video among other significant cuts. This device isn’t really an iPod as much as it is a wearable controller.

So where does Apple go from here? I’ve detailled what I think the nano can become with the addition of Bluetooth here but its worth watching the videos of the landscape again:

Even before it was launched, we knew people would be putting the nano on their wrists. Perhaps it is time for Apple to embrace the wrist wearing masses and to label this new iWear an ‘iWatch’? Thinner, bigger 3:2 screen and add Bluetooth while dropping to $99? How? Perhaps only by dropping the 8-16GB RAM requirements.

So, will Apple kill the iPod next week? In my opinion, very unlikely. But if they did, that’s how it would go down.

*thanks 9to5mac*

Bentley concept integrates two iPads, one Mac mini, and an iPod touch

Bentley used the Frankfurt Motor Show this week to unveil a new concept for their flagship Mulsanne luxury vehicle that integrates two iPads, two Apple wireless keyboards, one Mac mini, and an iPod touch as the heart of its entertainment system.

As you can see from the gorgeous images of the hand-crafted cabin, the Mulsanne concept packs in two retractable iPad workstations (equipped with full internet access) for rear passengers, with a wireless Apple bluetooth keyboard enclosed in a custom housing.

Bentley’s Alasdair Stewart said in a statement:

“Many customers use their time in the Mulsanne to keep on top of their business commitments or simply take a few moments to relax. This fully functioning concept highlights the Mulsanne’s potential to help busy executives to communicate effectively and quickly whilst travelling.”

The trunk houses a Mac mini that acts as a media center for a 15.6-inch HD display that drops down from the roof console, and also reportedly keeps the content on the two iPads in sync. An iPod touch sits on a built-in dock and acts as the control panel for the Rear Seat Entertainment and audio system, and the Mac mini’s Media Centre.

Of course this is just a concept as of yet, and we can only imagine the price tag, but it gives us a good idea of the automotive industry’s plans for Apple products down the road. Check out more images of the hand-crafted cabin after the break, which took Bentley’s craftsmen over 170 hours to create. Images courtesy of Dexigner.

Square Card Case app lands: Say goodbye to dead tree receipts and shop with style

After teasing a big Apple hookup and delivering on the promise with the announcement of the brand new Square Register for iPad and hinting at Card Case, the latter app finally went live on the App Store. The 12.9MB download is provided free of charge and is “the easiest way to pay at your favorite local merchants”. Use it to browse daily menus integrated with merchants, store digital receipts and pay with your name. It’s sure the closest thing to a rumored NFC-enabled iPhone thus far and with iPhone owners most open to mobile payments, it should be off to a nice start.

Additionally, paired with the Square Card Reader dongle and this app, your iPhone becomes a powerful mobile payment terminal letting you accept credit cards for a 2.75 percent commission on each swipe. By jumping into the game early, Square could profit big from booming mobile payments, especially with Google muscling its way into the market with Wallet. Check out a video tour embedded below and go past the fold for more pretty screenies. Note that Square, the company, is also the new home of the man that designed your Apple icons.

New iPhone 5 cases indicate a thinner but half inch wider and longer frame

Following our post with images of a purported iPhone 5 case, other sources have followed up with us with their own cases. This time we not only have a silicone case, but a hard case, too. The image above shows a top view of both of our cases. They both show a ringer switch on the opposite side of the volume keys, which is a shift from previous models of the iPhone. In addition, the bottom of these cases have holes for a separate speaker, main microphone, and USB dock connector. You may have noticed this on our iPhone 5 case post earlier this week, but today comes the more important information.

Our images were admittedly not very clear about the case’s thinness or if there was a “tear drop” as previously described by This is my next. Our new images are clear and there are appears to be a slight – not major – tear drop in the design. The case goes thick to thin from top to bottom. In addition, the sources who provided us with these two new cases have shared some dimensions. According to them, the case is 5 inches tall and 2.8 inches wide. These are tight cases so the iPhone 5 dimensions should only be a few millimeters smaller than those numbers. For comparison, the iPhone 4 is 4.5 inches tall and 2.31 inches wide. This likely will leave room for the rumored bigger screen, as reported by the WSJ, Bloomberg, and This is my next.

Although we are not able to absolutely confirm that these cases will fit the fifth-generation iPhone, the sources of these cases stress that the information used for design and manufacturing came from their own proven industry sources…Sources like the ones that provided amazingly accurate iPad 2 information and dimensions to case manufactures months before the product’s March debut. These cases are also just appearing weeks ahead of the iPhone 5′s debut. With the iPhone 5 most certainly in production, it is prime time for insider leaks to occur in Asia.

iPhone 4 case, left. iPhone 5 case, right

Apple is Evaluating the Possibility of Solar-Powered Products

Apple is evaluating the possible market for solar-powered consumer products, according to a DigiTimes report.

Samsung and Apple have been evaluating the possible niche market for solar-powered consumer products and considering the inclusion of Taiwan-based solar firms in their respective supply chains. However, according to Taiwan-based solar firms, these niche markets will need a longer time to develop. Samsung's solar-powered netbook adopts a unique sized solar cell, added industry sources, and the number of solar cells used is less than rooftop solar systems, hence it is unlikely for solar-powered consumer products to form a solid market in the short term.

This report is particularly interesting following a WSJ article that said Apple is experimenting with a new way of charging the iPhone 5. Initially it was thought that the WSJ was referring to WiTricity Wireless Charging; however, it's possible that Apple is looking at solar-powered charging as well.

*thanks iclarified*

This would be an amazing new technology for Apple to bring to the market, and let's not forget when Apple brings something like this to market others follow! We need devices that can charge themselves weather it be by solar power or any other technology.
