Apple acquires ‘AirDrop’ trademark from Android developer

Patently Apple reports that Apple has successfully transferred the “Airdrop” trademark from Urban Airship, Inc., a company behind the AirDrop service that provides marketing services to Android developers. AirDrop in Apple’s hemisphere, of course, is a new Lion feature that lets the user easily share files with other nearby users. The trademark was transferred to Apple on May 11 and effective on June 9.

Apparently, “there was no financial transaction disclosure made available with this transfer”. Patently Apple also discovered that Apple filed for the ‘AirDrop’ trademark in China and another one in Canada related to the Photo Stream feature of the iCloud service which automatically uploads and syncs up to a thousand most recent photos across all iOS devices authorized with the same Apple ID.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s vice president of OS X software (note how they no longer refer to it as Mac OS X), pitched AirDrop in Apple’s Lion promo clip, “When you create docouments, you often wanna share them with friends nearby. With AirDrop, it’s never been easier. Just click on AirDrop, drop the file on the picture of your friend and AirDrop takes care of the rest. You no longer have to worry about network configuration and you don’t need to keep a USB drive in your pocket”.

Sony PS3 Jailbreak Hacker Bankrupted, May End Up in Jail

Although Geohot was able to settle with Sony over the PS3 jailbreak, other hackers have not fared as well.

Graf_chokolo is a hacker who worked hard to bring linux back after Sony removed the install option from the PS3. He has run out of money to fight Sony's lawyers and may end up in jail as a result.

Hi guys, no money left anymore. Going to jail soon probably because i cannot pay court costs.

But i’m ready to stand up for everything i said and go to jail for that too. It’s not important to win, more important is to show them that we are ready to fight, that they cannot scare me off easily. Yeah, i’m ready to go to jail for my believes and my principles.

Most of people probably think that all computer and kernel hackers are weak kids, hiding in a cellar, eating pizza whole day, writing software and looking for attention :-) Maybe, but that’s NOT me. And i will get out eventually and continue my work. My work means very much to me.

Those looking to contribute to Graf's defense can do so here.

Best Buy to Match Apple's Back to School Promo?

Best Buy will match Apple's Back to School special by giving a $100 Best Buy Gift Card to eligible customers, according to MacRumors.

Apple recently launched their 2011 Back to School promotion. Instead of the typical iPod giveaway, Apple is now offering a $100 iTunes/App Store gift card instead. We've been told that Best Buy will be matching this promotion with a $100 Best Buy gift card for the same qualifying customers. This is an unadvertised promotion, so customers will have to ask for it specifically.

If you can verify this offer let us know in the comments!

How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3GS Using RedSn0w Mac 5.0b1

These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS on the 5.0b1 firmware using RedSn0w for Mac. Since iOS 5.0 has not yet been released these are instructions for developers only. This procedure will cause you to upgrade your baseband potentially ruining your chances for an unlock, it will not hacktivate so you must have your UDID registered with a developer, and it is tethered.

If you want to jailbreak a lower firmware version you can find the appropriate tutorial here.

Step One
Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage

Download RedSn0w from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the latest 5.0b1 firmware from the iOS Dev Center and place it in the same folder.

5.0b1 (3GS): iPhone2,1_5.0_9A5220p_Restore.ipsw

Extract the RedSn0w zip file by double clicking it.

Step Two
Connect your iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes.

Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down Option and click the Restore button. Restore is preferred as it won't create any wasted space on your iPhone.

Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the 5.0 firmware ipsw. Click the Choose button to continue.

**Important: if you previously updated your iPhone 3GS to the 6.15 baseband you must launch RedSn0w and place your device into PwnedDFU before restoring to iOS 5.

Step Three
Once iTunes has finished updating your iPhone to the desired firmware open the Pwnage folder on your desktop and launch the redsn0w application from the redsn0w folder we extracted earlier.

Step Four
Once RedSn0w opens click the Browse button

Step Five
Select the 5.0 firmware ipsw we placed in the Pwnage folder on our desktop then click Open.

Step Six
Once the firmware has been verified click the Next button to continue.

Step Seven
RedSn0w will now prepare the jailbreak data

Step Eight
From this window you can select the jailbreak options you would like. Make sure Cydia is selected.

Click the Next button to continue

Step Nine
Please plug your iPhone into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button

Step Ten
RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode. You can find more help with DFU mode here

Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.

Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.

Step Eleven
Your iPhone will now reboot

Step Twelve
RedSn0w will then begin uploading the new RAM Disk and Kernel.

Step Thirteen
Once this is complete you will be notified that RedSn0w is done. Click the Finish button. When your iPhone finishes rebooting (5 minutes or so) it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.

BOOT TETHERED:
Since this is a tethered jailbreak you must use Redsn0w to help you boot back into your jailbroken device if its powered off for any reason. Simply connect your iPhone to the computer, launch RedSn0w, select Just boot tethered right now from the options window and click Next to have RedSn0w boot your device.

*As usual a big thanks to the iPhone Dev-Team and Geohot for their hard work and contribution to the iPhone community.

Apple Intensifies Complaint Against Samsung

Apple has amended its complaint against Samsung asserting more patents and other intellectual property rights than before, according to FOSS Patents.

In the updated complaint Apple's copycat accusations are phrased more strongly and in more detail. The company says that Samsung "has been even bolder" than other competitors emulating Apple's products and has created "products that blatantly imitate the appearance of Apple's products to capitalize on Apple's success."

Apple also uses the media to strengthen its case.

The copying has been widely observed in the industry and has been mentioned in multiple articles reviewing Samsung products. For example, a writer for Wired wrote that Samsung's "Vibrant's industrial design is shockingly similar to the iPhone 3G." [...] "First Look: Samsung Vibrant Rips Off iPhone 3G Design." Another Wired writer wrote, "[L]et's settle one of the biggest arguments surrounding this phone. Yes, the Vibrant closely resembles a certain best-selling smartphone." [...] "Samsung Vibrant Looks Like an iPhone, Has Battery Life to Match." [...]

[A] Business Insider review of Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 stated that, "[f]rom the front, it looks like an iPad." [...]

A recent CNET reviewer remarked: "Taking another page from the iPad 2's school of sexy tablet building, the 10.1 has one of the cleanest designs we've seen on a tablet. [...]"

[Fast Company:] "Samsung’s Anti-iPad 2 Policy" – "[To] Clone the Heck Out of It"

The new complaint removes two patents and adds three to list of those being infringed on. Apple will likely escalate the situation with the filing of a preliminary injunction request against Samsung in the near future.

Has Apple Drastically Reduce iPhone 4 Camera Flash Orders?

Apple has drastically reduced its orders for the iPhone 4's flash suggesting that rumors of a new separate flash module for the next iPhone may be accurate, according to AppleInsider.

Apple is said to have "greatly reduced" orders of Philips LED flash components in the last one to two months. This person, who has provided accurate information on Apple's iPhone in the past, said the change "may" be a sign that Philips LED flash will not be used in the upcoming fifth-generation iPhone.

Last month Apple.pro posted a photo of Apple.pro of an iPhone 5 back cover with two holes; presumably for the rumored relocation of the camera flash. The relocation rumors were sparked after an iPhone case showed separate two separate holes on opposite sides of the device and then alleged camera components for the next iPhone were lacking the Flash and the part that blocks it from interfering with the lens.
