Thieves Steal $60,000 in iPads From Best Buy in 60 Seconds

It took thieves just 60 seconds to steal $60,000 worth of iPads from Best Buy earlier today, reports naplesnews.

Lee Sheriff's Office deputies responded to an alarm activation at Best Buy located in Coconut Point, 8000 Mediterranean Drive, Estero, just before 5 a.m. They found the rear door pried open and merchandise on the ground.

The store's manager said an initial check showed a cage door pried open and 60 to 90 Apple iPads missing. The manager estimates the value to be about $60,000.00, according to reports.

The three men broke into the store by prying open the back door. Dressed in dark clothing with their heads covered and wearing gloves, they quickly searched for the iPads, loaded them into a bin and left before police arrived.

Deutsche Telekom confirms iPhone 5 reservations Christian Zibreg Apple InciOS Devices no comments September 5, 2011 at 4:59 am German-language Focus.de is reporting (Google translation) that T-Mobile customers in the country are now allowed to reserve Apple’s unreleased handset, the iPhone 5, since this morning. The iPhoneblog.de first broke the story and 9to5Mac has also received several tips from our readers confirming that the Deutsche Telekom-owned wireless operators has in fact begun issuing so-called Premieren Ticket. These are basically support tickets – one per customer – for early adopters and informed buyers who couldn’t be otherwise convinced into buying the existing iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS. Those coupons will eventually let folks claim their handset, when it arrives, on a first-come-first-served basis. Only the carrier’s customers are eligible and only upon contacting sales representatives in one of the carrier-owned brick-and-mortar stores or by calling customer support. As you could imagine, Deutsche Telekom is pretty low-key about the initiative and thus shuns from advertising it apart from a rather cryptic hint on their website. Shortly after the report was published, Bloomberg was able to verify it with a company spokesperson, who said: Deutsche Telekom AG (DTE) will allow customers to reserve the next generation of Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s iPhone as of today in anticipation of supply bottlenecks for the device, spokesman Alexander von Schmettow said by phone. The operator will hand out coupons to people who expressly request the successor model to the iPhone 4, without providing the name or release details of the device, he said. Hints have been multiplying since last week that Apple could be close to unveiling a fifth-generation iPhone. Apple store employees have received their iOS 5 and iCloud training material and internal Best Buy documents have pointed to a Sprint iPhone 5 launch in the first week of October. Both nuggets confirm 9to5Mac’s discovery from July that Sprint would get iPhone 5, based on an April job posting seeking cellular engineers in the Kansas City region, right in the neighborhood of Sprint’s headquarters. 9to5Mac also originally broke the news that Apple would begin accepting iPhone 5 pre-orders in early September, gearing up for an early October launch. Also… …This past Saturday, Japanese blog Macotakara wrote (Google translation) that contract manufacturers Pegatron Technology and Foxconn have begun assembling iPhone 5 at a rate of 85 percent and 15 percent, respectively. The blog notes that the units are not yet being packaged in boxes until Apple iOS 5 is ready for prime time. With so much clues out in the open, it’s safe to assume that invites for an Apple media event are ready and that it is now up to Apple’s marketing and CEO Tim Cook to hit the Launch button.

Best Buy expects Sprint iPhone 5 the first week in October?

BGR reports that Best Buy’s internal sales forecast is expecting an iPhone 5 on Sprint with pre-sales beginning the first week in October. That lines up with our earlier report, though as both we and the Best Buy statement mentioned launch dates are subject to changes.

‘Apple Fixture Installation’ could point to October 21st iPhone 5 launch at BestBuy

Discovered by This is my next, an internal BestBuy document points to an ‘Apple Fixture Installation’ Friday, October 21st. Interestingly, this date lines up with the mid-October range that’s being tossed around for the iPhone 5 release.

This is my next’s source says that a manager being at the store at 6 A.M. to open the doors is out of the ordinary, seeing as they usually get there at 7 A.M. The source also said that this similar procedure happened with the iPhone 4 launch. BestBuy managers have a meeting scheduled on October 10th to talk “upcoming BIG release dates”. Sounds fishy, huh? If these reports and precedent are correct, we can expect the device to land early Friday morning.

Apple is rumored to be hosting a press event at the end of September where they’ll announce the iPhone 5, and officially release iOS 5. You’ll remember our report that Apple will release the iPhone 5 October 7th, which is also a Friday. In terms of carriers, WSJ is reporting that Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint will be getting their hands on the device.

Also, of note: October 23rd (Sunday) will be the tenth anniversary of the introduction of the iPod. Video below:

Best Buy to Match Apple's Back to School Promo?

Best Buy will match Apple's Back to School special by giving a $100 Best Buy Gift Card to eligible customers, according to MacRumors.

Apple recently launched their 2011 Back to School promotion. Instead of the typical iPod giveaway, Apple is now offering a $100 iTunes/App Store gift card instead. We've been told that Best Buy will be matching this promotion with a $100 Best Buy gift card for the same qualifying customers. This is an unadvertised promotion, so customers will have to ask for it specifically.

If you can verify this offer let us know in the comments!

Best Buy pulls iPad-trashing banner for Android tablet from website

Someone from Apple is going to pick up the phone and yell at Best Buy over this stunt. Oh wait, somebody already did. Asus is to blame here, really. Wanting to create a buzz around its Android-driven Eee Pad Transformer tablet, lousy marketeers came up with this stupid iPad bashing idea, a telling sign of the lack of creativity.

The Android Spin blog first spotted the offending banner which was taken down shortly, most likely after a complaint from Apple. It depicted an iPad lookalike duct-taped to a keyboard with light lettering that read “Like That.” Right next to it was a Transformer, with the “Only Better.” tagline in strong typeface.

When you start trashing a competitive product that’s by far best-selling in the category, it’s a pretty telling sign of your own inadequacies…

What Asus is basically telling us here is that those needing a full-fledged notebook rather than a tablet are better off with their pricey slate just because an extra battery and a dockable keyboard make it a “notebook”, right? Am I missing something here?

If Asus CEO Jerry ShenI approved this advert, maybe he ought to begin dusting off his resume. What, you haven’t heard of the wrath of the iPad?

Is Best Buy going to iPad for Easy Pay?

The rumor at Forbes is that Best Buy is going to buy each of its employees in its 1100 US locations an iPad as part of its Connected Store program. That in itself is significant, if true. Best Buy has sold the iPad since its inception last year and the program would not only sell lots of iPads to Best Buy, but it would also give the Apple tablets much more exposure in a more and more crowded tablet space.

A source with knowledge of corporate mobile device deployments tells Forbes that one of the country’s top 10 largest retailers expects to distribute iPads to each of its on-floor sales associates. This retailer, the source adds, operates 1,100 stores across the U.S. As the country’s largest electronics retailer — as well as a retailer that currently operates around 1,100 stores in the U.S. — Best Buy is a natural match.
It would be even more interesting is if Best Buy used those iPads as Easy Pay systems like those of GAP and of course Apple Stores. iPads have been showing up as Payment systems all over the place in the year since its launch so it seems like a great idea to us!

Best Buy Sets iPad Status to 'Deleted'

Best Buy has changed the status of the iPad in its inventory system to 'deleted', according to a MacRumors source.

We've just heard from a Best Buy source that all iPad models have been transitioned to a "deleted" status at the source's store.

There is no word yet on any incoming shipments or placeholders in Best Buy's systems, but Apple is widely expected to introduce updated iPads at tomorrow's event, with availability rumored to come very soon after.

We will be live blogging Apple's March 2nd special event starting at 10:00am PST tomorrow.

Best Buy Laptop Discovery Tool Lists New Apple SKUs

Best Buy's Laptop Discovery Tool is listing a set of "New SKU" laptops from Apple Computer, according to Engadget.

This seems to corroborate recent rumors of a MacBook Pro refresh coming next week, as do the $1,199, $1,499, $1,799, and $2,199 price points, all of which are presently occupied by current-gen 13- and 15-inch MBP variants. There is an additional $2,499 sticker for a laptop identified only as "New SKU I," which presumably points to an upgrade to Apple's 17-incher.

Screenshots were previously leaked of Best Buy's internal system that listed new MacBook Pros with a March 11th release date and price of $1199 for the 13-inch model.

Since then MacTrust has predicted that the notebooks will feature a better battery, be lighter, have an improved display, and offer a modular drive. MacRumors has confirmed with a source that the MacBook Pros will be released on Thursday, February 24th.

Retailers Make Space for White iPhone 4

Best Buy and The Source are making space for the white iPhone 4 suggesting it will arrive very soon, according to Engadget.

This shelf tag was apparently spotted this weekend at a Best Buy in Houston, and it speaks for itself: white iPhone 4, AT&T, $599.99 off contract (the same price as the black). Of course, we all know this thing is coming within the next few weeks at this point -- there's just too much evidence pointing in that direction -- but the fact that we've got big box retailers printing and placing tags for it now suggests that it's coming sooner rather than later.

A report from Macotakara suggests that a new Japanese developed painting material has finally solved the production problems with the white iPhone 4.

iPad 3G now $30 less at Best Buy, hint at iPad 2 on the way?

Best Buy has just reduced the price of the iPad WiFi + 3G by $30. That’s for all storage capacities: 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB. The 16 GB 3G model is now $599, the 32 GB is $699, and the 64 GB is $799. Maybe this is a to clear some inventory for the new iPad 2? It’s interesting that the WiFi-only models are not discounted, and the iPad 3G is not discounted at Apple’s online store. Get them here:

Apple iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G – 16GB: $599

Apple iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G – 32GB: $699

Apple iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G – 64GB : $799

Best Buy recently showed three new iPad SKUs on their website, but it is unclear as to what they may be placeholders for. We’ve heard through the grapevine that Best Buy will soon be selling the Verizon iPad + MiFi bundle, but this may change with the impending launch of an iPad 2 with built-in CDMA functionality.

The iPad 2 is set to adopt two cameras that both shoot pictures and video. The front camera will be 0.3 megapixels with the back being an 720P HD video recording capable one megapixel sensor. The iPad 2 has been rumored to adopt a Retina Display, but evidence we found in the SDK, and a report from an analyst state that the iPad 2′s display will keep the current version’s 1024 x 768 resolution.

More and More Reports of White iPhone 4's appearing at Orange and Three UK

Hot of the heals of the white iPhone 4 appearing in AT&T and Best Buy‘s systems, TiPB notes that the mythical device has appeared on both Orange UK and Three UK’s online databases. This is most likely supporting evidence to our report stating that the white iPhone 4 would officially go on sale in Spring 2011.

Best Buy to Talk Down the Verizon iPhone?

It looks Best Buy may not be carrying the Verizon iPhone at launch and instead will be convincing customers to stick with AT&T, according to some internal documents obtained by GearLive.

Best Buy is training their employees to encourage customers to stay with AT&T. As you can see in the document above, which we've confirmed is straight out of a Best Buy playbook, you can see that Big Blue is looking to talk down the Verizon model. What we haven't confirmed is the reason why--is Best Buy not going to be selling the Verizon iPhone at launch? If not, it would make sense that they'd wanna downplay the phone that they aren't selling so that they can continue moving phones that they actually stock.

The Verizon iPhone has already been criticized for its mid cycle release, its slow speeds, its not having a SIM card, its discontinued upgrade policy, and its inability to use data and voice simultaneously; however, those with exceptionally poor AT&T service may not care.

Best Buy stores may be getting a larger selection of Apple products and their own Genius Bars, according to a TUAW report.

At the same time, the stores will get a Genius Bar, up to this time a fixture only at Apple Stores.
