Amazon prepping Android-powered tablets for “hundreds less” than Apple’s iPad

According to the New York Post (via BGR), Amazon is getting ready to launch their rumored Android-powered tablets with a price tag “hundreds less” than Apple’s current $499 base model iPad 2. “Hundreds less” sounds a lot like $299.

The devices, expected to launch sometime in October, will more than likely be the result of the entry-level tablet codenamed “Coyote” and it’s pro-model counterpart the NVIDIA T30 Kal-El powered “Hollywood”. We told you about these devices back in May, which will most likely be powered by a highly customized Amazon version of Android (bringing with it Amazon services like the Appstore, Kindle eBook store, Amazon Videos, music and possibly brought together by the Cloud Drive).

Amazon is clearly prepping a huge move into the tablet market. We reported this week that the company signed up a third touch panel supplier, and that was after recently becoming the second largest buyer of tablet-related parts – without yet having released a tablet.

Bamboom Finds Way to Stream Free Broadcast TV Via the Cloud?

Bamboom is an upcoming service that thinks its found a way to stream free broadcast TV to all your devices without being shutdown by the networks.

Rather then sending out a stream that is accessible by numerous customers, Bamboom plans to assign each customer its own tiny antenna. The signal from this antenna will then be sent to the cloud where it can be accessed by any of the customer's devices. One customer, one stream.

That seems laborious and expensive, but it's the same legal construction that Cablevision has used to provide a remote DVR service for its customers, and the Supreme Court has signed off on that idea. (Not coincidentally, that one customer/one use idea is the same one Amazon and Google are using to provide cloud-based music lockers without sign-off from the big labels.)

While pricing hasn't been announced its thought that Bamboom might offer the service free but charge for added capabilities such as DVR.

Amazon Cloud Player is now compatible with all iOS devices

The ‘not really endorsed by the labels but its ok because the Cloud is really just a hard drive partition that you own’ Cloud Drive service by Amazon is now working on iOS devices according to a report by TechCrunch/iFans today.

If you visit Amazon’s Cloud Player through the Safari web browser on an iOS device, you’ll see that it does in fact now work. You’ll first hit a warning page telling you that your browser is not supported, but just ignore that. Click into the music in your drive and it will begin playing. It works flawlessly — even to the point where if you get a Push Notification or incoming call, the music will be paused.
Amazon will probably announce the new compatibility at some point soon.

That’s all well and good but you know Apple is going to have a similar service, perhaps even endorsed by the record labels, ready by September at the very latest. Still, if you are already an Amazon music purchaser, this puts your Cloud collection on your iOS device.

Amazon challenging iPad with own tablet this summer?

The Amazon tablet rumor is a bit long in the tooth, but this time it could be for real. Fasten your seatbelts, folks – Asian trade publication DigiTimes just quoted supply chain sources claiming that the online retailer commissioned contract manufacturer Quanta Computer to build a tablet PC device:

Taiwan-based notebook maker Quanta Computer has recently received OEM orders from Amazon for its reported tablet PC and the device will also receive full support from Taiwan-based electrophoretic display (EPD) maker E Ink Holdings (EIH) for supplying touch panel as well as providing its Fringe Field Switching (FFS) technology, according to sources from upstream component makers.
Sources shared other tidbits related to the rumored Amazon tablet.

Rather than replace the Kindle e-book reader, the tablet will be introduced as a new device because as Amazon plans to further cut the Kindle’s price in order to push the device into education and consumer markets. They will promote the tablet PC “using its advantage in software and content resources to challenge iPad 2″, says the publication.

This partially jives with the rumors that the Kindle may somehow go free at some point. Recently, Amazon announced a project where users can borrow Kindle books from 11,000 libraries in the country.

Quanta will produce up to 800,000 tablet units during the peak season, DigiTimes wrote. The report goes on to note that Quanta is expected to ship the tablet by the second half of this year. Quanta Computer is also a manufacturing partner of Research In Motion, Sony, Apple and other established brands. They currently manufacture MacBooks for the Cupertino firm.

Now You’ll be able to borrow Kindle books from 11,000 U.S. libraries, from Amazon

Amazon just announced a new library lending feature for digital Kindle books. The official press release says customers will be able to borrow Kindle books from over 11,000 local libraries in the United States to read on all Kindle hardware versions and free Kindle reading apps. The familiar features will work with Kindle library books as well, the stuff like whispersyncing of notes, highlights and last page read.

iOS users have been able to use the Overdrive App to do the same thing for some time (although Overdrive says 13,000 libraries)

This is a pretty big deal and here’s why…

You will be able to check out a Kindle book from a local library and enjoy it on your device with added benefits, Amazon said. For example, if you checked out a Kindle book again or buy it on the Kindle Store, all your annotations and bookmarks will be preserved. Of course, your notes won’t show up when the next user checks out the same book. This clever move by Amazon will do wonders to popularize their Kindle device and e-reading in general. The online retailer has so far done awesome job promoting the Kindle, but even though the device took off to a huge start and practically owns the category, it won’t become a mainstream phenomenon unless it becomes ubiquitous in the way the iPod did. For that to happen, more people need to be exposed to e-reading and what better way to reach reading aficionados than right inside their sanctuaries – public libraries. I’m sure this announcement will bring lots more people under the Kindle fold, helping Amazon cut the Kindle’s price until it eventually becomes free, which I’m certain is in the cards.

*thanks 9to5Mac*

We hope this feature will reach the kindle apps on all devices..

Amazon: Look at ads and we’ll knock $25 off the Kindle

Amazon will knock $25 off the price of the Kindle to watch ads.

You agree to use sponsored screensavers and ads at the bottom of the home screen and Amazon gives you $25. I’m convinced a Kindle will eventually be free.

It is really too bad that there aren’t any jailbreak efforts going on around the Kindle community.

Details down below:

Special Offers & Sponsored Screensavers
New, Lower Price
When you buy Kindle with Special Offers, you are getting the same bestselling Kindle for $25 less—only $114. Special offers and sponsored screensavers display on the Kindle screensaver and on the bottom of the home screen—they don’t interrupt reading.
Special Offers
You’ll receive special offers directly on your Kindle. Examples include:

$10 for $20 Amazon.com Gift Card
$6 for 6 Audible Books (normally $68)
$1 for an album in the Amazon MP3 Store (choose from over 1 million albums)
$10 for $30 of products in the Amazon Denim Shop or Amazon Swim Shop
Sponsored Screensavers
Our goal is to display sponsored screensavers that you want to see. That’s why we’ve created a free Kindle app and website (coming soon) called AdMash. Anyone who’s interested can download AdMash and help pick future screensavers. Two prospective screensavers show up side-by-side, and you pick the one you find most attractive. The ones preferred most by customers qualify to become sponsored screensavers.

You can also set your personal Kindle Screensaver Preferences to give us hints on the style and types of sponsored screensavers you’d like to see on your Kindle. For example, you can indicate that you’d like to see more or fewer screensavers that include elements such as landscapes and scenery, architecture, travel images, photography, and illustrations. Together, AdMash voting and Kindle Screensaver Preferences help us select the most attractive and engaging sponsored screensavers to display on your Kindle.

Amazon: Kindle subscribers can read NYTimes.com for free

The New York Times has raised a pay wall yesterday. From now on, you must choose between three subscription models ($15/$25/$35 every four weeks) to access online articles at NYTimes.com. As you know, everyone can read up to twenty articles each month for free and home delivery subscribers get to enjoy unlimited access to online articles on NYTimes.com and via smartphone and tablet apps.

In addition to those deals, Amazon partnered with the paper and announced yesterday that subscribers to the Kindle version of The New York Times will get free and unrestricted access to all online articles at the NYTimes.com site. Russ Grandinetti, Amazon’s VP of Kindle content:

Given The Times’ transition to a digital subscription model, we’re excited to be able to offer Kindle subscribers online access to all the digital content available at NYTimes.com at no additional cost.
You’ll receive an email notice when the offer goes live. The New York Times is the bestselling newspaper in the Kindle Store, Amazon tells us. This interesting proposition was obviously conceived as another reason to buy the Kindle hardware. If last couple of week are an indication, Amazon sure knows how to keep themselves in the news.

First they made a splash by launching the Android Appstore for Android despite lawsuit from Apple over the use of App Store trademark, then turned heads with the new Test Drive feature that lets you sample Android apps in a browser and yesterday they beat Apple and Google with a cloud locker for music, movies and other document types.

Apple, please borrow Amazon’s virtual interface idea

Amazon’s online bazaar for Android software opened for business a week ago and today a useful new feature went live. The call it Test Drive and it lets you sample apps before buying – in your desktop browser. No such thing exists neither on Google’s own Android Market nor Apple’s App Store. It works like magic, really. You just visit the Amazon Appstore on your desktop, select an app and hit the “Test Drive now” button.

Up pops a new window that’s basically a full-fledged Android operating system virtualized in the cloud. You can test the chosen app here, but also use the virtual machine to browser the web using Android’s virtual browser, listen to music, browse image galleries and more. It’s a stunning example of the cloud power leveraging Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud technology, the online retailer explains:

Clicking the “Test drive now” button launches a copy of this app on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), a web service that provides on-demand compute capacity in the cloud for developers. When you click on the simulated phone using your mouse, we send those inputs over the Internet to the app running on Amazon EC2 – just like your mobile device would send a finger tap to the app. Our servers then send the video and audio output from the app back to your computer. All this happens in real time, allowing you to explore the features of the app as if it were running on your mobile device.
I’m inclined to believe Apple is already hard at work on copying this neat feat, though more likely as part of iTunes rather than in Flash…

In addition to this Amazon-specific try-before-you-buy feature, Google’s Android Market gained last year a cool option to beam purchased apps to all your authorized devices with a click of the mouse. Apple has neither, for now. The rumor mill is sending mixed signals about an alleged cloud iTunes service.

App Store items are now visible on the web and there’s nothing technically precluding Apple from adding a cloud-based iPhone Simulator layer to try our apps in a browser. Speculating further, should they utilize an OnLive-like interactive video streaming, we might be able to test drive even high-quality games in real-time.

New Amazon Kindle Commercial Again Takes Aim at iPad Video

The new Amazon Kindle commercial, "The Book Lives On", again takes aim at the iPad's susceptibility to glare.

Recently, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of Concord Securities reported that the iPad 2 will gain a thinner, anti-reflective display rather than a higher resolution one.

Amazon Opens Appstore to Developers

Amazon has opened its upcoming Android Appstore to developers who wish to sell their applications through the site.

A $99 annual developer program fee covers the application processing and account management for the Appstore developer program. Amazon says they are currently waiving the program fee for a developer’s first year of the program.

The Amazon Appstore will be a new category on Amazon.com. Customers will be able to shop for apps both from their PC’s and from their mobile devices. Amazon says it will market apps using proven eCommerce and marketing features like search and search refinement, browse, and app recommendations based on customers’ past purchases.

Amazon hasn't given a firm date on the full launch of the Appstore but it will be later this year.
