Apple’s 3D Display & Imaging patent could lead to Kinect-like gestures for future Apple TV

Apple was just granted a patent by the US Patent and Trademark Office (via Patently Apple) detailing 3D display & imaging technologies that could potentially lead to advanced Kinect-like navigation through performing gestures or manipulating holographic images within a virtual 3D space.

Essentially, this would allow you to perform hand gestures within a virtual space while your hands are displayed on a screen, allowing for precise manipulation of on-screen elements.

The patent’s inventor also notes that these imaging technologies could be used for presence detection, head tracking, and auxiliary display capabilities as well. We can’t help think of Kinect-like gaming for a potential future Apple TV, although the extent of the gestures and tech described in the patent goes well beyond current implementations.

As Patently Apple notes, the “virtual elements have no real physical embodiment” but could potentially take advantage of holographic technology that the same inventor outlined in a previous Apple patent. The application could also include audio feedback. For example a clicking sound when pressing a button within the virtual space would provide confirmation of the action.

Patently Apple explains:

“a user would place his or her left hand 120 and/or right hand 122 into the imaging volume or space. The hands would then be detected by the scanning beam. A left hand image 124 and a right hand image 126, respectively, would then be projected by the projection beam onto the display area to provide immediate feedback to the user concerning the relationship between the user’s hands and the various virtual objects within the imaging volume or space. Thus, as depicted, the user could grasp one of the knob images with the left hand by moving the left hand until the left hand image indicates that the selected virtual knob (not shown) represented by the corresponding knob image has been engaged. The knob could then be grasped and manipulated such as by rotating the knob.”
One can only imagine the implications this could have on games and business apps running on a future Apple TV. However, it appears the tech could be used as a global navigation method rather than geared towards a specific application. The patent even touches on potential uses for mobile devices such as an “interactive virtual keyboard” that would detect “finger locations and moves”.

Sony’s Crackle bug leaves location services on in iOS

Crackle’s “It’s On!” moniker could refer to Location Services which the application asks to turn on the first start up. The problem is that Crackle, even when closed, leaves Location Services on, which could drain the battery. Users have to go into Setting/Location Services to deny it access manually (below).

We’re waiting for that bug to be squashed and also an Airplay option in an upcoming update (but otherwise it is a pretty solid way to get Sony content).
*thanks 9to5Mac*

Airplay would be a great feature for this app. Netflix watch out Crackle is taken over!

Webout Streams HTML5 Video to Apple TV via AirPlay

Webout is a web browser application for iPhone and iPad that can stream HTML5 to your Apple TV using AirPlay.

Ever wanted to display a website on a TV, projector or monitor from your iPad or iPhone? Or wished Safari could show you the article you're reading without ads and other annoying page elements? webout lets you do that with minimal settings to configure and ease-of-use in mind. Plug in your VGA adapter any time to activate the screen mirroring, tap on the action button to choose a way to get your web 'out', or rotate the device to see in landscape.

What's New In This Version:
- Stream HTML5 video to Apple TV with AirPlay. Safari will only stream audio via AirPlay, but webout can stream video as well in this update. For most videos, just tap play on the video within the page, then activate the stream via the action menu. It's a little spotty on the iPhone since a lot of websites deliver video to your device not inline for the smaller display, but it works great on the iPad. Requires 4.2, a device that supports multitasking and the latest OS version on your Apple TV.
- Fixed a bug where webout incorrectly disallowed sending a page to safari
- Made the button tap areas slightly larger for big, American thumbs
- New icons (for a while...)

You can purchase webout from the App Store for $0.99.

AirPlay From Your iPhone to Your Mac! [Video]

Erica Sadun has announced AirPlayer, a custom Bonjour AirPlay service that lets you send video from your iPhone to your Mac just like you would to the Apple TV. This is great for those who use a iMac or Cinema Display as their TV.

Behold the development build of AirPlayer -- click Read More to see the video. What AirPlayer does is create and advertise a custom Bonjour AirPlay service that pretends to be an Apple TV. Bonjour is Apple's zero configuration networking solution for allowing devices and applications to communicate with each other over local area networks. When Apple created AirPlay, it basically set up a new way for Apple TV to interact with iOS using Bonjour communications.

You can download an ad-supported extremely alpha version of AirPlayer from Erica's website.

Check out the video demo below...

Apple Tries to Have AirPrint Hacktivator Taken Down

Apple legal has set a notice to Netputing demanding they remove the AirPrint Hacktivator tool from download.

The developer notes that until version 1.7 of the application some 10.6.5 beta files where included in the application resource folder and where in some case used (without being really needed) by the application. As of version 1.7 only one line of code needed to be injected.

Hopefully Apple will be fine with the removal of all previous versions from the site and will let me continue to distribute the Apple files free AirPrint Hacktivator 1.7.1 and subsequent versions. This tool is free (and require a bit more steps) but provide similar results (allow you to print to OS X shared printers from iDevices) as a commercial application like Printopia.

Steve Jobs Says Third Party AirPlay Support is Coming in 2011

Steve Jobs says AirPlay support for third party apps and Safari is likely coming in 2011. This comes via a response to an email from a MacRumors forum member

-----
Hi, I recently updated both my iPhone 4 and iPad to 4.2. I think my favourite feature is airplay. This is seriously amazing and makes sharing content seamless. I just purchased Apple TV and was wondering are you ever going to make airplay video work for videos in safari and 3rd party apps? I hope to get a response. :)
-----

Yep, hope to add these features to Airplay in 2011.

Sent from my iPhone

-----

For those jailbreakers who can't wait for Apple to enable this feature you can install AirVideoEnabler from Cydia.
