Apple and Publishers Still Don't See Eye to Eye on iTunes Subscriptions

Apple and magazine publishers still don't see eye to eye on iTunes subscriptions, according to a MediaMemo report.

Publishers want the ability to sell the subscriptions themselves, or at least the opportunity to hang on to subscribers’ personal data. And Steve Jobs won't let them.

Sources say Apple is offering:
● The ability to sell app subscriptions through iTunes.
● 70 percent of the revenue from each sale.
● The ability to offer an opt-in form for subscribers that would ask them for a limited amount of information: Name, mailing address, email address.

Apple has reportedly had their offer on the table for months but none of the big publishers are interested in giving Apple 30% and not receiving the credit card data for their customers. That information is valuable to them for marketing and bundles.

Publisher are now looking with hope towards the influx of Android tablets.

iPhone Dev-Team Announces New Improved Hactivation Method

The iPhone Dev-Team has announced a new hactivation method by sbinger that provides the full benefit of push applications and increases battery life substantially

Developer @sbingner (author of TetherMe) has made some excellent progress devising a new hactivation method that kills two birds with one stone for all you ultrasn0w unlockers. His tool, “Subscriber Artificial Module (SAM)” tricks your iPhone and iTunes into creating legitimate activation tickets even though you’re unlocked with ultrasn0w. This means you get the full benefit of push applications, and your battery life increases substantially. If you’d like to try it out, check out http://www.bingner.com/SAM.html

To help make it easier to try out @sbingner’s tool, we’ve updated redsn0w to include a new “Deactivate” option for the 3G and 3GS. Use this option *after* you’ve installed SAM…it will remove the normal patches made to lockdownd and let SAM take over. (sbingner plans on making a button to do this within SAMPrefs too). Great work, @sbingner!

You can download the new version of RedSn0w:
● Mac OS X
● Windows

WARNING: Updating to iPad Baseband for iPhone Unlock May Disable Your GPS

The iPhone Dev-Team has just issued a notice stating that updating your iPhone to the iPad baseband for unlock could result in the loss of GPS functionality.

Unlockers have been reporting mixed results about GPS functionality at 06.15.00. Until we can track down what differentiates those who retain GPS vs. those who lose it, be conservative and assume you’ll lose GPS at 06.15.00. As we work on finding the cause (and possibly a fix), please report your personal findings in our comments section. (Update: early indications are that while 06.15.00 is capable of GPS, it will require some further hacks. But please still be conservative and assume you will lose GPS at 06.15, in case the hacks don’t work).

While the iPad baseband should be capable of GPS functionality if you don't absolutely need the unlock you should not update to the iPad baseband at this time.

Receive Location-Based Alarms And Messages

jeTap has introduce GPSNotifier 1.0 for iPhone 4, their app that sounds an alarm and displays a text message when the user arrives at a chosen location. Relying on Apple's new Region Monitoring, an always-on cell tower positioning system, the app and alarm are automatically activated when the device enters any specified alarm zone. Its features include: 64 user-definable alarm locations; proximity sensitivity control; and location entry using the address book, map, or current location. Because it does not make use of standard, satellite-based GPS data, the app does not make any additional power demands on the battery.

GPSNotifier 1.0 is an alarm based not on time, but place. Now, a user can take a to-do like "Call Bob the next time I'm in Tucson," or "Check on lease terms the next time I take the car into the dealer for service," and set an alarm and message on their iPhone 4 that will patiently wait, without running an app or consuming any power, until the user reaches the alarm location. This type of location-based notification has been impractical until recently, because, as Apple advises, "Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life."

With iPhone 4 Apple introduced a new, supplementary positioning system based on a complex algorithm performing continuous positional triangulations between cell phone towers. In metropolitan areas with many such towers, measurements can be highly accurate. And because the iPhone is constantly in "Receive" mode, searching for cell towers, these location coordinates are purchased with practically no cost to the battery. This continuous, background, global positioning system is called Region Monitoring by Apple, and it is the technology that makes GPSNotifer possible.

The app's convenient GUI allows the user to set an audible alarm and text message by entering an exact location, such as a street address, from the address book. Alternatively, the user may go to a map and tap to create a pushpin location, or set the current location. Upon being set, a blue tinted circle indicates the range or proximity of the alarm. In areas with many cell towers a sensitivity setting of "1 mile" or less is appropriate, but in more sparsely populated areas users are encouraged to experiment with settings of "2 miles" or more.

Feature Highlights:
* Enable/disable alarm from the main screen
* Enter location from the address book, current location, or by dropping a pin on the map
* Application is activated using multi-tasking when entering an alarm zone
* Multiple alarm sounds
* Choose alarm proximity sensitivity
* Set, store, edit, enable/disable up to 64 different, location-based alarms

A single tap activates or deactivates the alarm, which can be accessed from the main screen. A deactivated alarm may be stored and re-enabled. The list of alarms may be easily scrolled and edited, and each includes a text label, thumbnail map, and on/off switch. Each location may have its own proximity setting and one of several different alarm sounds.

"GPSNotifier is one of the first apps to employ Apple's new Region Monitoring technology," stated Founder Stephen Lu. "For the first time ever, a smartphone can reliably provide a location-based alert that may not be activated until months later."

Language Support:
* US English and French

Pricing and Availability:
GPSNotifier 1.0 is regularly priced at $1.99, but is currently available at the introductory price of $0.99 (USD) until Dec. 1, through the App Store in the Navigation category. GPSNotifier Lite, limited to setting only one alarm, is available free. Review copies are available upon request.

NBC Agrees to $.99 TV Show Rentals for iTunes?

NBC may have finally agreed to $.99 TV Show rentals in iTunes, according to a screenshot unearthed by 9to5Mac.

As you can see in the image above the TV show listing for The Office has $0.99 rental buttons next to the usual $2.99 buy buttons on NBC shows on the iTunes store.

Oh, could Apple have another Photoshop FAIL on their hands? – Doesn’t look like it as photoshopping a screenshot for TV rentals would sort of be pointless…

Currently you can only rent HD TV shows from ABC, ABC Family, Fox, Disney Channel and BBC America for 99 cents an episode.

HD Photographer Enables Widescreen (720p) Photos on the iPod Touch 4G

HD Photographer enables the taking of widescreen (720p) photos on the iPod touch 4G with the in-built Camera application. This effectively adds more megapixels to the resulting photos at the cost of losing the traditional 4:3 aspect ratio.

Because of this cost, this tweak also adds a button to the Camera app that toggles the tweak in case you would like to retain the original ratio.

There are no icons installed for this item, and no settings to configure.

You can purchase HD Photographer from the Cydia Store for $.99.

You never need to worry about losing your privacy with Catchif , because you always have full control over who can track you and when you'd like to be tracked. You also have the choice to allow or deny a "Where are you" request, as well as the freedom whether you'd like to track others when you receive a "Catch me if you can" request/invitation, meanwhile, you can send out "Where are you" request or "Catch me if you can" invitation to someone whenever you like. The Silent Mode will make you invisible from any friend whenever you want. A Block List is in place as well if you need to block the location information sent to you.

If a friend you want to track or share your location with does not have Catchif installed, you can easily send him/her the Catchif reference with the Invitation tab on Facebook or a gently touch on the Invite button of iPhone and iPad. Thanks to Cathif's super powerful service, you and your loved ones will never get lost and will always stay close and stay safe, no matter where they are or where you are.
