Wi-Fi Direct Connects Devices Without a Hotspot

Wi-Fi has made an important leap in connecting devices anywhere, anytime - with or without a traditional network available. The Wi-Fi Alliance today announced that it has begun certifying products capable of making device-to-device connections, designating those products Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Wi-Fi Direct.

With portable content like photos, videos and music taking center stage in the digital consumer experience, Wi-Fi Direct devices meet an important consumer need: directly connecting devices for applications such as content sharing, synching, printing, and gaming anywhere with ease. Current trends demonstrating how people use digital devices highlight the need for this compelling solution:

"We designed Wi-Fi Direct to unleash a wide variety of applications which require device connections, but do not need the internet or even a traditional network," said Edgar Figueroa, CEO of the Wi-Fi Alliance. "Wi-Fi Direct empowers users to connect devices - when, where and how they want to, and our certification program delivers products that work well together, regardless of the brand."

Wi-Fi Direct-certified devices can connect with older Wi-Fi CERTIFIED devices, enabling a vast range of devices already in use to connect with products implementing Wi-Fi Direct from the certification program's inception. Wi-Fi Direct devices include a push-button set up mechanism, employ the latest WPA2TM security protections, and bring typical Wi-Fi throughput and range. Wi-Fi Direct-certified devices can support Wi-Fi CERTIFIED n technology as well as older forms of Wi-Fi.

The first products to be designated Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Wi-Fi Direct, and which form the test suite for the certification program are:
● Atheros XSPAN® Dual-band 802.11n PCIe Mini Card (AR928x)
● Broadcom BCM43224 Dual-Band 802.11n 2x2 MIMO PCIe Half Mini Card
● Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6200
● Ralink MIMObility 802.11n 2x2 PCIe Half Mini Card
● Realtek RTL8192CE-VA4 HM92C00 PCIe mini card

Apple Countersues Motorola Over Six Patent Infringements

Apple has filed two lawsuits against Motorola over six different patents mainly focusing on Multi-Touch. This comes after Motorola filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) alleging that Apple's iPhone, iPad, iTouch and certain Mac computers infringe Motorola patents and filed patent infringement complaints against Apple in the Northern District of Illinois and the Southern District of Florida.

These are the patents covered by Apple's suit as outlined by Patently Apple.

In the First Case (0661)
● One: Apple, Inc patent titled: Ellipse Fitting for Multi-Touch Surfaces: Patent Abstract: Apparatus and methods are disclosed for simultaneously tracking multiple finger and palm contacts as hands approach, touch, and slide across a proximity-sensing, multi-touch surface. Identification and classification of intuitive hand configurations and motions enables unprecedented integration of typing, resting, pointing, scrolling, 3D manipulation, and handwriting into a versatile, ergonomic computer input device.

● Two: Apple, Inc patent titled: Multipoint Touchscreen: Patent Abstract: A touch panel having a transparent capacitive sensing medium configured to detect multiple touches or near touches that occur at the same time and at distinct locations in the plane of the touch panel and to produce distinct signals representative of the location of the touches on the plane of the touch panel for each of the multiple touches is disclosed.

● Three: Taligent, Inc patent titled: Object-Oriented System Locator System: Patent Abstract: A method and system for adding system components (documents, tools, fonts, libraries, etc.) to a computer system without running an installation program. A location framework is employed to locate system components whose properties match those specified in search criteria. The framework receives notification from the system when system components whose properties match the search criteria are added to or removed from the system.

In the Second Case (0662)
● Four: Apple, Inc, patent titled: Touch Screen Device, Method, and Graphical User Interface for Determining Commands by Applying Heuristics: Apple's invention generally relates to electronic devices with touch screen displays, and more particularly, to electronic devices that apply heuristics to detected user gestures on a touch screen display to determine commands.

● Five: Apple Computer, Inc. patent titled: Method and Apparatus for Displaying and Accessing Control and Status Information in a Computer System: Apple's invention generally relates to the field of computer systems; particularly, the present invention relates to displaying a status and control function bar or window to enable access of user selected indicia to a computer system user.

● Six: Apple Computer, Inc. patent titled: Support for Custom User-Interaction Elements in a Graphical, Event-Driven Computer System: Apple's invention relates to graphical, event-driven computer systems, more particularly to custom interactive user-interaction elements in a computer system having a window-based graphical user interface.

Google Founders Wanted Steve Jobs As Their First CEO

The first person Google cofounders Larry Page and Sergey Brin wanted to hire as their CEO was Steve Jobs, according to Bloomberg's Game Changers series.

Yahoo news reports that after interviewing 12 or 13 candidates they didn't like, Page and Brin happened to make something of a social visit to Apple and Jobs.

After the visit, the Google cofounders met with investor John Doerr and asked him: why can't we hire that guy?

No mention of Doerr's response but we can guess at what it might have been.

VLC May Be Pulled From the App Store

Apple has been sent a formal notification of copyright infringement regarding the way VLC for iOS is distributed in the App Store.

Rémi Denis-Courmont, one of the primary developers of VLC, explained to MacStories that Apple’s iTunes Terms and Conditions don't allow users to install both free and paid apps on more than 5 devices. This goes against the original GNU license VLC's code is based on.

"In any case, while the rules for distribution of open-source or "free" (as in speech) software are extremely relaxed, they do exist and have to be abode by. VLC and open-source software in general would not have reached their current quality and success if it had not been for their license. Therefore, blatant license violation cannot be tolerated at any rate. Concerned users are advised to look for application on more open mobile platforms for the time being."

You can download VLC Media Player from the App Store for free.

We don’t see USB 3 taking off at this time. No support from Intel, for example.

Boonana Trojan Horse Analysis And Removal Tool

SecureMac has released an initial analysis of the Boonana Trojan Horse and has created a free removal tool as well as administrative instructions to manually remove the affected machines. All of the information including the analysis of the malware is available at the Boonana Trojan Horse security bulletin page.

The initial infection vector of the Boonana trojan is through a message on social networking sites similar to "Is this you in this video?" which includes a link to an external site. Upon clicking the link, a java applet will attempt to load in the user's web browser.

During our testing, the malicious Java applet communicated with a Command & Control server, and presented an installer window at a random time after accessing the malicious site. This installer did not indicate that it had been downloaded from the web which indicates it is avoiding the quarantine flag typically set by programs such as Safari ...

Threat level discussed:
Due to the fact that the Command and Control servers for the malware are still active, gathering information such as IP addresses (most likely for control purposes), as well as the modification of the sudoers file to allow passwordless access, we maintain a threat level rating of critical for trojan.osx.boonana.a. In many cases, especially with botnets, the malware might not initially exhibit malicious behavior, but can become active at any time as the command and control servers are updated. Detailed procedures and instructions are also listed in the report.

Help Babies and Toddlers with Vocabulary

Swag Soft has released Katakune Super Flash Cards 1.0, a new iPhone app featuring a set of more than 170 beautifully rendered 3D graphics baby flash cards on the Apple iTunes store, designed to help babies and toddlers learn new words.

Featuring cartoon characters from the award-winning preschooler cartoon series Katakune, Katakune Super Flash Cards teaches babies and young kids more than 170 everyday commonly used words from different categories such as animals, clothing, colors, food, fruits, gadgets, nature, numbers, sports, space, vehicles and more through 3D rendered graphics.

Using more than 4 months for production, award-winning animation studio MediaFreaks designed the graphics featured on this app. Parents and kids will be delighted by the colourful and detailed artwork. An early tester had this to say about the flash cards - "This is definitely the most comprehensive and beautiful set of Flash Cards ever made! Most other flash card apps simply pale in comparison!"

A reviewer from Apps Playground said, "What I like about this app is the graphics, which are beautiful in comparison to some of the low-budget rivals."

Besides the large number of words being taught, every flash card also comes with a voiceover to let young kids learn how to pronounce the corresponding featured item. Categories can be toggled on and off to design a child's learning curriculum and an inbuilt testing feature allows kids to be tested on what they have learned.

Aldric Chang - Executive Producer for Swag Soft and Creator of the award-winning Travels of Wiglington and Wenks Virtual World - says, "Like all the products my colleagues and I have created, we have put in a great deal of effort to make Katakune Super Flash Cards the best product of its kind. I am certain parents will find great pleasure in seeing their young ones learn so many new words through such an enjoyable and fun app."

Pricing and Availability:
For a limited time, Katakune Super Flash Cards 1.0 is only $0.99 USD (or equivalent amount in other currencies) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Education category. Katakune Super Flash Cards is a steal for the exceptional educational value and high quality graphics it provides. The iPad version will also be available soon in the iTunes store.

DEVONthink To Go 1.0 Released

DEVONthink To Go has been released to the App Store and is now available for US $14.99.

DEVONthink To Go lets users bi-directionally synchronize their DEVONthink or DEVONnote databases with their iPads, iPhones, or iPod touches, and so take all their important documents, email messages, and bookmarks with them. Once synchronized the groups and documents can be browsed, viewed, and searched.

DEVONthink To Go works with as many desktop document formats as possible on iOS, lets the users view them, share them by email, or open them in third-party apps such as iAnnotate PDF. Documents annotated or changed in other apps can then be 'opened back' in DEVONthink To Go to update them in its database. Plain text documents are editable right on the device (with TextExpander support when installed on the device), and so are comments, labels, flags, and unread statuses.

Both names and the full text of documents can be searched in an instant. Special lists for recently used and unread items as well as filters that, e.g., show only flagged items within a group make working even with large collections comfortable. Document lists can be sorted after a variety of fields, and an info screen shows all relevant metadata about databases, groups, and documents.

All changes that can be made on the device are synchronized back to the Mac counterpart. Synchronization uses WiFi and so requires both device and Mac to be on the same WiFi network. A future version will also support through-the-cloud synchronization with MobileMe and other services such as WebDAV or DropBox as well as audio and video notes. Users do not need to transfer their whole databases to the device, a 'Sync' group in every database allows to select the items to get synchronized on a group-by-group or even item-by-item level.

To protect the user's privacy DEVONthink To Go honors the user name and password settings set for a database on the desktop and asks for credentials when the database is used on the mobile device.

When used with DEVONthink Pro Office on the Mac, images taken on the device are, if desired, fed through the ABBYY text recognition engine on the Mac, which makes all recognized text in the image searchable. The created PDF is sent back to the device with the next sync.

We are really excited about DEVONthink To Go. It finally lets all our DEVONthink and DEVONnote users extend their workflow also to their iPads and iPhones making DEVONthink the number one document management solution not only for the Mac but also for all iOS devices. - And this is only the beginning," states Eric Bohnisch-Volkmann, President of DEVONtechnologies.

Pricing and Availability:
DEVONthink To Go is a universal app that runs natively and with optimized user interfaces on both iPads and iPhones/iPod touches. DEVONthink To Go 1.0 is offered at the introductory price of $14.99 USD (or equivalent amount in other currencies) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Productivity category. If you are interested in reviewing DEVONthink To Go for your magazine, web site, or blog, please email us to receive a promotion coupon for the US iTunes App Store.

Apple Explores Use of Nitride Coating for Scratch-Proof Devices

Apple is exploring the use of nitride coating to make stainless steel devices more durable and scratch resistant.

AppleInsider has discovered an Apple patent published by the U.S. Patent & Trademark office entitled "Nitriding Stainless Steel for Consumer Electronic Products." It describes a cost-effective system that would place a layer of nitride atop a stainless steel exterior.

"In addition to providing a durable, hard surface that is both scratch and impact resistant, the nitride layer allows for the natural surface color and texture of the underlying stainless steel to remain visible to the user," the application reads. "It is this natural surface color and texture of the stainless steel that adds to the aesthetically pleasing appearance of the consumer electronic product, thereby enhancing the user's overall experience."

58-inch iPhone Table Prototype

Table Connect for iPhone is a project to bring the iPhone's interface and multitouch capabilities to a 58-inch table.

We are about to put the final touches on the "iPhone Table" prototype. Table Connect for iPhone is what you have been waiting for, multitouch on steroids!

For now, we start with mock-ups as well. Currently, we are finishing up the work on the alpha release software for the table.

The iPhone is attached via the standard dock connector – immediately after it is attached, the magic starts to happen. The entire content of the iPhone’s screen will be projected onto the multitouch table, still giving full access to all the touch gestures using multitouch technology.
