iOS Recovery Mode Can Be Enabled Wirelessly in iOS 5.0b2

Recovery Mode can reportedly be initiated wirelessly via RecBoot in iOS 5.0b2, says 9to5Mac.

You not only can sync your media wirelessly in iOS 5, but it appears you can enter Recovery Mode using 'RecBoot, Etc' from the Mac.

Unfortunately, to perform a jailbreak one must place their iDevice into DFU mode so its unlikely that the Dev Team will be able to use this to create a wireless jailbreak tool.

Geohot is Now Working For Facebook

Facebook has hired Geohot, the popular hacker behind the iPhone and Sony Playstation jailbreaks, reports TechUnwrapped.

Joshua Hill (P0sixninja) recently mentioned in an interview that Geohot is trying to avoid the limelight after his legal battle with Sony and is concentrating on his day job at Facebook.

Gabe Rivera of Techmeme reports that Geohot started at Facebook in May and announced it on his Facebook account on June 17th. His last wall post says, "Facebook is really an amazing place to work...first hackathon over."

We wish Geohot the best of luck at Facebook but also hope he has some time left to contribute to the iPhone community.

Apple Blocks iPhone 4 Unlock Via Gevey SIM

Apple has blocked the ability to unlock the iPhone 4 using the Gevey SIM in iOS 5.0b2, according to MuscleNerd.

it's surprising Apple closed Gevey interposer hole in b2 rather than waiting until final (maybe they were under pressure)

Gevey's SIM Interposer was able to unlock the iPhone 4 by force activating the baseband using the emergency dialer. MuscleNerd notes that its unlikely Gevey will try to battle Apple while iOS 5 is in the beta period.

Apple posts iCloud transition FAQ; Mail, Contacts, Calendar and Find my iPhone web apps stay

Apple has posted a new web page that is dedicated to answering frequently asked questions about the transition from MobileMe to Apple’s new iCloud service, which launches this fall (via TechCrunch). The webpage explains which services are staying with iCloud and which are going (shown in image above). Those are in addition to these new services:

iTunes in the Cloud
Photo Stream
Documents in the Cloud
Automatic downloads and purchase history for apps and books
Backup and restore
The site also says that users will be able to migrate their current .Mac or MobileMe username to the iCloud service. A big question as of late has been over whether or not iCloud will include functionality in the browser; Apple answers:

Yes. Web access to iCloud Mail, Contacts, Calendar, and Find My iPhone will be available at icloud.com this fall.

Current MobileMe services such as iDisk, Web Gallery, Mac-based sync services, and iWeb published websites will still be supported, for current MobileMe and .Mac (where applicable) users, until June 30, 2012. New iCloud users, which can sign up for a free Me.com account as a part of iCloud, will not be able to access those features.

Microsoft vs. Apple The History of Computing InfoGraphic

Manolution has published an incredibly detailed timeline of events and stock prices throughout the historic battle between Microsoft and Apple.

Despite maintaining dominance of the OS market for over three decades, Microsoft’s stocks continue to trade at or below their first ever public value of $27.50 (at closing on 3/13/1986).

Thanks to Apple’s extremely successful ventures into various hand-held gadget markets (namely the iPod, iPhone and iPad) Apple’s stock continues to rise, trading at over $300 more than that of Microsoft’s as of 6/6/2011.

Manolution predicts the gap in stock pricing between the two companies will continue to grow for the foreseeable future.

iOS 5 Offers Evidence That Apple is Building Its Own Maps

More evidence that Apple is building its own maps solution has been found in iOS 5, according to MacRumors.

The site was tipped off to a new "Map Data" section in iOS 5's legal disclaimers. This section is separate from Google Map's terms and many of the companies do not overlap.

• CoreLogic - offers Parcel data which marks boundaries for of properties to provide positional accuracy in location-based solutions.
• Getchee - provides location and market data on China, India and Southeast Asia.
• Increment P Corp - provides location and traffic data for Japan.
• Localeze - provides local business listings.
• MapData Sciences Pty Ltd. Inc - provides mapping data for Australia and New Zealand.
• DMTI - provides postal code data for Canada.
• TomTom - offers global TeleAtlas mapping data which is also licensed by Google for their map solution.
• Urban Mapping - provides in-depth neighborhood data such as crime, demographics, school performance, economic indicators and more.
• Waze - offers real-time maps and traffic information based on crowd sourced data.

While Apple has reportedly signed on to continue using Google Maps, the company has publicly revealed that it's working on a traffic service for iOS users and its acquisitions and hirings suggest a full blown maps solution.

ICE Screen HD 1.2 Released

DVMagic Studios has announced an update to its popular "ICE Screen HD" iPad 'Lock-Screen' wallpaper creation software. Completely rewritten, this new version has enhanced Photo management capabilities including cropping, resizing, instant special effects, additional fonts and a fantastic new 'in-app' graphical tutorial. This is the last update that will directly support iOS versions prior to 4.3 and is recommended for all users.

Easily create personalized "Lock-Screen" wallpapers with your own pictures and information. Commonly used to display Lost/Found contact information as well as ICE (In Case of Emergency) information such as contact, severe allergies and severe medical conditions.

The iPad was designed to be used while in both vertical and horizontal positions with ease. Orientation is an important concept to understand when creating wallpapers. Your iPad is rectangular in shape, therefore there are 2 primary directions that your device can display information is Portrait (Vertical) and Landscape (Horizontal). 'Portrait' and 'Landscape' are Photography terms that have come to generally describe Horizontal and Vertical orientations for devices.

Displaying a Portrait image on a horizontal device would cause the sides of the photo to be empty. The opposite is true while displaying a Landscape image while device is vertical. The top and bottom would have empty space. To handle this issue, the device automatically zooms into the center of your Lock-Screen image and zooms it in to fill the entire screen. When rotated back to Portrait, it automatically zooms it back out. So it is important to have your photo properly sized (zoomed) to fit the screen so that the iPad can properly display your image in both orientations.

Because the top and bottom areas of an image are automatically zoomed when device is horizontal, it is important to keep all of your text message out of the "Image Crop Areas". This is easy to do with the help of on-screen visual guides. Overlay your text message onto your photo or select a color background to create your new wallpaper. Text font, size, color, drop shadow angle(s) and color can be adjusted for the perfect look.

ICE Screen HD now has even more Photo Image Effects:
* Grayscale: Make bold statements and evoke emotions with the simple stylized beauty of black and white photographs
* Posterize: Over saturation of the yellow color channel for old postcard appearance
* Negative: Reverse image color channels for a "35mm film negative" appearance
* Sepia: Over saturation of "rust color" applied to image for an antique look. Combine with Grayscale first for even more effect
* Dulled: Under saturation of colors for a weathered/faded appearance of older photographs

Every iPad should have this information in case it is lost/found or for emergency responders to be able to contact your designee!

Pricing and Availability:
ICE Screen HD 1.29 is $1.99 USD (or equivalent amount in other currencies) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Utilities category.

Samsung Denied Access to the iPhone 5 and iPad 3

Samsung has been denied access to the iPhone 5 and iPad 3 in its legal battle with Apple, according to FOSSPatents.

Apple has accused Samsung of copying its iPhone and iPad products and taken legal action against the company. As part of these proceedings Samsung was forced to hand over some of its unreleased devices to Apple. In turn, Samsung demanded that Apple be forced to hand over the iPhone 5 and iPad 3.

Yesterday, Judge Lucy Koh denied Samsung's request noting that the company was overreaching in their request. However, Koh hints that if Apple were to file a preliminary judgement that it may need to be evaluated against the background of the iPhone 5 and iPad 3.

Samsung is free to argue, for instance, that there is little likelihood of confusion because consumers will not encounter its products side-by-side with the iPhone 4 or iPad 2, but rather with Apple's next generation iPhone and iPad. Similarly, as to proximity, Samsung is free to argue that because the iPhone 4 and iPhone 2 will soon be outmoded and reduced in price, they are not being sold (or very soon will not be sold) to the same class of purchasers who are likely to buy new Samsung products. By choosing to allege infringement only of its current products, Apple opens itself up to these arguments.

Apple about to drop cheaper AirPort Extreme, 3TB Time Capsule (update: FCC confirms)

Apple is set to release upgraded models of their AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule products. The brand name wireless routers have been constrained for many weeks now in retail locations across the globe: from Apple Stores to Best Buy to resellers world wide. The new AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule, first confirmed by 9to5Mac, will hit the streets any day now as part numbers for the devices have have been sent to us.

The AirPort Extreme will come in a single configuration and the Time Capsules will keep the 2TB configuration and add a 3TB model for the first time. According to the part number information, all three wireless router configurations will feature price drops. The Time Capsules are rumored to include a new software update caching feature that will store Mac OS and iOS updates on the device’s hard drive for installation on any networked Mac/iOS device.

Here are the new part numbers courtesy of Mr. X:

MD031LL/A – AIRPORT EXTREME 802.11N (5TH GEN)- USA

MD032LL/A – TIME CAPSULE 2TB (4TH GENERATION) – USA

MD033LL/A – TIME CAPSULE 3TB (4TH GENERATION) – USA

Also in the pipeline are new Mac minis, Mac Pros (likely launching in early August), and MacBook Airs (possibly later this month or early July).

[Update 1: July 21, 2011]: An updated AirPort Extreme wireless base station with marketing model number A1408 has surfaced in the FCC database, confirming our findings. Engadget explains that the filing drops hints of the three-stream standard for 450Mbps over both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.

Black MacBook Airs coming soon? (Update: another source says unseen)

MacRumors is reporting that Apple is readying Black MacBook Airs in its next refresh.

We’ve received several anonymous tips claiming that at least some models of the next-generation MacBook Air will be be available with a black finish, different from the aluminum case used on the current MacBook Air and most of Apple’s other Macs. The most specific of the claims suggests that a black anodized aluminum case would be available on a top-end MacBook Air model, in much the same way as Apple once offered a high-end black MacBook on top of the standard white offerings.
Remember that when we first broke the news of a MacBook Air way back in 2007 (without Optical drives), we’d been told there was a black version. That information was later verified with the Ebay auction selling a prototype MacBook Air with a Black aluminum shell (pictured above, another shot below).

We’ve also received an anonymous tip with a similar Lion/Sandy Bridge/Thunderbolt/Next few weeks release information. That tip also said a $899 starting price point.

Update: A reliable source has told us that they haven’t seen any Black in the new MacBook Air materials

Death of the web? No. But people are spending more time in Mobile Apps

Steve Jobs’ favorite analytics company, Flurry, has some interesting numbers that put app usage above web usage.

Today, however, a new platform shift is taking place. In 2011, for the first time, smartphone and tablet shipments exceed those of desktop and notebook shipments (source: Mary Meeker, KPCB, see slide 7). This move means a new generation of consumers expects their smartphones and tablets to come with instant broadband connectively so they, too, can connect to the Internet.
Yeah but those devices have web browsers…

Our analysis shows that, for the first time ever, daily time spent in mobile apps surpasses desktop and mobile web consumption. This stat is even more remarkable if you consider that it took less than three years for native mobile apps to achieve this level of usage, driven primarily by the popularity of iOS and Android platforms. Let’s take a look at the numbers.
But what if one of those apps is a web browser like Opera? (via Business Insider.)

As a note of interest, Facebook has increasingly taken its share of time spent on the Internet, now making up 14 of the 74 minutes spent per day by consumers, or about one sixth of all Internet minutes. Considering Facebook’s recent leak regarding Project Spartan, an effort to run apps within its service on top of the mobile Safari browser, thus disintermediating Apple, it appears Facebook seeks to counter both Apple and Google’s increasing control over consumers as mobile app usage proliferates.
