iOS 4.2.7 Jailbreak Untether Released For Verizon iPhone

iH8Sn0w and Pushfix have released a Cydia package to untether your currently tethered Verizon 4.2.7 iPhone. This package will work for those who have jailbroken by pointing RedSn0w to the 4.2.6 ipsw.

I originally ordered a Verizon iPhone 4 for my upcoming SHSH blobs dumper. Then I + many others on twitter realized that an untether was not available for 4.2.7. Over the past few weeks, I've been sick and didn't do much, but today I was finally able to get the strength to work on this Verizon untether. Since i0n1c's payload is not easily reversible, I went to previous exploits. After trying, pod2g's + posixninja's kernel exploit for 4.2.x is STILL in 4.2.7! After some more work, I managed to get this thing untethered!

You can install the "Verizon Untether for 4.2.7" by adding the http://cydia.pushfix.info repo to Cydia.

iH8Sn0w has also released Sn0wBreeze 2.6.1 with support for the iOS 4.2.7 untether.

OSX Lion new external monitor settings.

Along with the release of an updated OSX lion beta release come new findings, like the new way that lion handles an external screen. Usually when you have an external screen connected to your Mac leopard and below and you close the lid on your MacBook your Mac goes to sleep, now it seems that OSX Lion has new settings that leave the Mac up and running when you have an external monitor connected and lid is closed as shown in the video below:

Reading List feature coming to Safari in Mac OS X Lion

MacRumors found an interesting new feature in the latest Mac OS X Lion builds called the Safari Reading List. Reading List is a feature akin to services like Instapaper, and allows you to save webpages “to read later”. The feature is not fully activated in Lion Safari, but the application’s help menu breaks it down.

If you come across a webpage or link that you want to read later, Reading List gives you an easy way to save the link.
The concept is very simple. When you want to save a link for later, simply click shift and click the link and it will go into your reading list for later viewing:

To open up your reading list, simply click the reading glasses icon next to the bookmarks icon (not yet visible in Lion). You can also view saved links/articles in “reader mode” – a feature that debuted with Safari 5 last year.

Instapaper’s Marco Ament comments and reactions via Twitter are below:

More evidence pointing to Find my Mac launching with Mac OS X Lion

When the first developer previews of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion were released, we reported on our findings of “Find my Mac” strings hidden deep in the operating system. At that time there was no concrete evidence that Apple is bringing their Find my iPhone service to the Mac, but now there are some strong indicators in the latest Lion update, that Find my Mac is launching with Lion. The first would be the Find my Mac icon, which is reminiscent of the Find my iPhone icon.

Additionally, there is something called Find my Mac messenger. We’re not too sure what this is, but we speculate that it might be a way for the Mac’s finder to instant message with the Mac’s owner. Apple is set to unveil a revamped MobileMe, so it’s possible that Apple will throw some instant messenger client for Find my Mac into the new web interface.

NPD: Verizon iPhone stops the Android marketshare march

NPD data shows that the iPhone, backed by its release on Verizon in the US, actually reversed the market share growth of Android for the first time in two years. This news comes amid mixed information about CDMA iPhones. Reports surfaced today that CDMA iPhone production was cut in half, yet Android-heavy Sprint said the Verizon iPhone had materially impacted its own sales.

Android still did account for half of all US sales, however.

According to NPD’s “Mobile Phone Track” consumer tracking service, for the first time a majority (54 percent) of all new mobile-phone handsets purchased by U.S. consumers were smartphones. Driven by increases in smartphone sales in Q1 2011, average selling prices for all mobile phones rose 2 percent over the previous quarter to reach $102; however, average prices for smartphones actually declined by 3 percent (falling to $145).The Android OS lost ground for the first time since Q2 2009, falling to 50 percent of smartphone unit sales in Q1 2011 compared to 53 percent in the prior quarter. Apple iOS share rose 9 percentage points to comprise 28 percent of smartphone unit sales. BlackBerry OS also lost ground, falling 5 points, to 14 percent.“The rise of Apple and HTC show how companies can drive change in a mature device market to change the rules of the game,” said Rubin. “The overall success of U.S. market leaders Samsung and LG will be tied to their success in the smartphone market.”
It appears that the US smartphone race is coming down to two horses.

Perhaps the white iPhone will keep the momentum going in the next quarter?

Foxconn employees leaked iPad 2 design to accessory makers

Three Foxconn employees are accused of leaking the iPad 2 design to accessory maker and are being charged with it, DigiTimes reports.

Several online shopping retailers in China were able to sell iPad 2′s protective case products before the iPad 2 was even launched, leading Foxconn to suspect that there might have been some employees leaking the design of iPad 2 which it reported to the local police. The local police on December 26, 2010, arrested three employees that were suspected of leaking the design, and officially charged the three employees for violating the company’s trade secrets on March 23, 2011, the reported added.

First iPad 2 cases surfaced last December, a possible indication that some accessory makers may have been given iPad 2 design specs four full months ahead of the official introduction. Our original post was asked to be taken down, yet many more designs appeared. A lot of Apple-related leaks originate these days from Asian suppliers and contract manufacturers, but it has been rare to see those companies press charges against sources.

Verizon iPhone hurt Sprint sales

Sprint Nextel has just reported their first quarter results, their first full quarter of Verizon iPhone availability. Despite adding more than 1.1 million total wireless net subscribers (prepaid: 846,000, postpaid: 310,000), best ever prepaid churn of 1.81 percent, and the lowest prepaid churn of 4.36 percent in over five years, they could have attracted even more customers if it weren’t for that pesky CDMA iPhone.

Sprint CEO Dan Hesse told analysts on a conference call that Verizon’s introduction of the iPhone “did have an impact on our performance for the quarter”. He would not put a dollar value to it, though. On the other hand, there are indications that CDMA iPhone sales are not currently brisk. Digitimes reports that Apple may have cut CDMA iPhone 4 orders by half to five million units, down from the ten million CDMA units originally commissioned for the entire 2011. Are potential Verizon iPhone buyers simply waiting for a next-generation iPhone?

If you need a white iPhone 4 now, head to a store, online inventories are going fast!

The mythical white iPhone 4 has finally landed on store shelves, as Apple promised yesterday. This time it’s for real and long lines in Hong Kong serve as an indication that Apple may have another hit on their hands, even if they only changed the color from black to white. Having waited ten months for Apple to finally produce the elegant device, it’s understandable people don’t want to wait another day.

If you’re in the market for a white iPhone, better head to the nearest Apple store right away because online orders are estimated to ship in 3-5 business days. Ouch. Looks like all stock of white iPhones is being sent to own retail stores, carriers and third-party retailers like Walmart and Best Buy. Makes sense to avoid repeating the iPad 2 launch woes when a lot of disappointed customers left home empty-handed after having waited in the line for hours.

Credit card giant Visa funds Twitter founder’s Square mobile payment startup

Jack Dorsey, the man who co-founded Twitter and Square, has managed to secure financial backing for his latter startup. The much-needed cash will be provided by Visa, one of the leading credit card brands. The funding comes on top of existing investments by Sequoia Capital and Khosla Ventures.

Square makes a handy dongle that turns your iPhone or Android phone into a mobile credit card reader. They hit the ground running when Apple put the device on sale on both its online and brick-and-mortar stores.

Reuters reports that Visa got a seat on Square’s advisory board although the extent of their investment remains unspecified.

The funding hasn’t changed anything in Square’s product portfolio. Furthermore, the company continues to offer their free smartphone software and the iPhone/Android dongle.

This could be the beginning of a lucrative side-business for Visa because Square targets people who need to charge clients on the spot, which includes a wide variety of professions and real-life situations.

South Park spoofs iPhone location tracking

Apple is again all over South Park. Season 15 of the animated television series premiered yesterday and it aired with a bunch of humorous takes on Apple’s latest PR fiasco surrounding the iPhone location tracking issue. Plus, they also ridicule the iPad as the latest fashion must-have item.

Check it out in Gawker’s reel or go to the official site and watch the entire episode entitled “HUMANCENTiPAD”, it’s worth your time (sorry, they don’t allow video embedding). Plus, the episode also pokes fun of lavish Steve Jobs media presentations.

Apple Store goes down, only white iPhones coming up

Apple has just pulled down the Apple Online store and the white iPhone 4 is of course coming up. Our colleague Mr. X has let us know that the white iPhone 4 will be the only thing coming up this time around (save for new iPad 2 countries). iMacs will likely wait until next week. Speaking of iMacs, we’ve been told that certain Apple Store employees will be at work early on May 3rd (naturally a Tuesday), putting up new posters and displays. Catching my drift?

Android has more freebies as Apple makes big bucks from 3x paid apps

The headline won’t shock anyone following the mobile space, although there’s more to it than meets the eye. A Distimo survey, relayed by TechCrunch, shows the Android application store rocks more free programs than Apple’s App Store. Utrecht, Netherlands-based Distimo counted 134,342 free items on Android Market versus 121,845 freebies on the App Store.

Even though Apple’s store was the slowest growing mobile bazaar in March 2011, it still leads in terms of quantity and remains the most vibrant app community on the planet. The number of App Store items is approaching the 400,000 milestone (Distimo counted 367,334 apps). At current 16 percent growth rate, however, Android Market will overtake Apple’s store in app volume five months from now.

Also interesting: iPad submissions grew 12 percent in March to 75,755 apps, with an average daily revenue nearing a cool $400,000. As any iPad owner knows, a larger canvas commands premium prices ($5.36 on average for an iPad app). Another tidbit: Distimo expects BlackBerry App World to overtake Nokia’s Ovi Store by the end of next month. Some insight and more pretty charts after the break.

The 12,497 free apps difference in favor of Android is negligible in the greater scheme of things. Both platforms offer enough free alternatives to common apps. However, iOS is running circles around Android with three times higher number of paid apps. Let’s not forget iOS is the home to higher-quality software than Android. It shouldn’t surprise anyone that iPhone, iPad and iPod touch owners are spending more money on mobile apps compared to their Android-toting friends. This is especially true for premium games that are far and few between on Android. This particular category is a whole new ball game as iOS titles slowly but surely eat Nintendo’s and Sony’s breakfast.

All of the aforementioned factors currently work in Apple’s favor. As of February 2011, Apple paid two billion dollars to app developers – and that’s after the company’s 30 percent cut on each sale. Poor revenue performance on Android should be blamed, in my personal opinion, to ad-supported culture, fewer triple-A games and lower software quality in general. Summing up, Android is not the home to top-notch software and there’s a survey for that, too. Android people have figured that out – hence, not a lot of them buy apps. Just my two cents. Of course, each person has his or her own pro et contra arguments so do share yours in the comments.

Still No decision on when Steve Jobs is going back to full time at Apple

As part of the interview Steve Jobs gave to AllThingsD on white iPhones and Location security, he was asked when he would return to Apple full time. Jobs brushed the question aside saying only:

Look, we’re here to talk about location today, not me.
It is probably best not to read too much into the non-statement and the current part-time role seems to be fitting everyone just fine.

Crowd-sourced traffic service from Apple due “in the next couple of years”

The blogosphere is abuzz this morning with Apple’s official response to the Locationgate scandal. While the company’s powerful PR machinery is in full swing trying to dodge the bullet, we have pinpointed a rather interesting line in Apple’s document entitled “Q&A on Location Data”. Before we dive into that – and for those who didn’t get the memo – Apple has confirmed a database residing on the device that contains anonymized data generated by tens of millions of iPhones sending the geo-tagged locations of nearby WiFi hotspots and cell towers.

They use it to “help your iPhone rapidly and accurately calculate its location when requested”. Storing a year’s worth of data was a “bug” that will be fixed with a forthcoming iOS update. “We don’t think the iPhone needs to store more than seven days of this data,” the company wrote. But Apple may be planning to use this crowd-sourced information to release a new traffic service in the future, quite possibly a turn-by-turn traffic service. Apple itself alluded to this in the document:

Apple is now collecting anonymous traffic data to build a crowd-sourced traffic database with the goal of providing iPhone users an improved traffic service in the next couple of years.
What might this service be like?

I remember that Google has been experimenting with a similar crowd-sourced traffic service in Japan. They were tracking phone movements to see where there is traffic congestion. If a phone on a highway was staying relatively still, then Google knew there were traffic delays. Multiply this data by millions of handset owners and you get a pretty detailed insight into near-real-time traffic patterns in any given area. We also know Apple was seeking engineers to take the Maps app “to the next level” and they later added more engineers specialized in navigational software. Plus, we also know, as MacRumors noted, that Apple acquired mapping startups Poly9 and Placebase.

These acquisitions were for a purpose and if Apple intends to create its own mapping service, as we believe it will, then a crowd-sourced turn-by-turn based service sounds like a no-brainer.

Apple confirms white iPhone 4 launch tomorrow April 28 2011

Apple has just issued a press release confirming the April 28 launch for its sought-after white iPhone 4. The device will be available from Apple’s online and retail stores, AT&T and Verizon Wireless stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers. The statement quotes Apple’s worldwide marketing honcho Phil Schiller:

The white iPhone 4 has finally arrived and it’s beautiful. We appreciate everyone who has waited patiently while we’ve worked to get every detail right.

Developer interest in iOS grows even as market for Android smartphones expands

The latest survey from a respected research firm has Android as the #1 smartphone platform in the US for the month of March. Nielsen reported this morning that Android tops the charts as the country’s leading smartphone platform with a 27.9 percent market share measured by units, followed by the iOS platform which grabbed 27 percent market share. Research In Motion’s BlackBerry came in third with 22 percent of the market.

Just six months ago iOS led the pack with 27.9 percent of the smartphone market, followed by RIM (27.4 percent) and Android (22.7 percent). Some 31.1 percent respondents planned on buying an Android phone in March versus a 30 percent inclination towards iPhones. That’s also an increase for Android from a 25.5 percent preference and a drop for the iPhone from 32.7 percent, both six months ago. And now, the good news…

Despite Android’s lead stemming from a rich assortment of devices in different shapes, sizes and price points sold by dozens of carriers around the world, iOS is still the platform of choice for app developers. According to another survey of 2,760 developers by Appcelerator, they remain strongly attracted to iOS as “fragmentation and tepid interest in current Android tablets chip away at Google’s recent momentum gains”. About two thirds of polled developers think it’s game over for other platforms, namely RIM, Nokia, Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard. Nearly the same proportion of respondents cited Android fragmentation as the biggest hurdle for the platform.

A whopping 91 percent are “very interested” in writing apps for the iPhone (86 percent for the iPad) versus 85 percent for Android phones (71 percent for Android tablets).

Despite Android’s lead, if I may add, Apple still controls about half the profits for the entire cellphone industry. That being said, it’s no wonder developers are shifting away from Android towards iOS. As I argued before, Android people reluctantly buy apps. The reasons are many, such as Android’s emphasis on ad-supported models and lower-quality apps in general. This tweet that sums it up best:

Room with 60 students. 40 have Android, 20 have iPhone. None of the Androids have ever bought a paid app. Almost all of the iPhones did.
