How to Perform an Untethered Jailbreak of Your iPhone 4 Windows 5.0.1

These are instructions on how to perform an untethered jailbreak of your iPhone 4 on 5.0.1 using RedSn0w for Windows. The Mac version of this tutorial is here.

This procedure will cause you to upgrade your baseband potentially ruining your chances for an unlock. Please follow a Windows tutorial on how to update to iOS 5.0.1 using a custom ipsw if you need an unlock.

If you want to jailbreak a lower firmware version you can find the appropriate tutorial here.

Step One
Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage

Download the latest version of RedSn0w from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the 5.0.1 firmware from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. (Note: you do not need to download the 5.0.1 firmware if you are already on iOS 5.0.1)

Extract the RedSn0w zip file by double clicking it.

Step Two: (You can skip this step if iOS 5 is already installed on your device)
Connect your iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes.

Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down Shift and click the Restore button. Restore is preferred as it won't create any wasted space on your iPhone.

Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the 5.0 firmware ipsw. Click the Choose button to continue.

iTunes will now update your iPhone to the new firmware.

Step Three
Launch the redsn0w application from the redsn0w folder we extracted earlier.

**Windows 7 users may want to try running the redsn0w executable mode as an administrator in Windows Vista compatibility. You can do this by right clicking the executable and selecting Properties from the contextual menu.

Step Four
Once RedSn0w opens click the Jailbreak button

Step Five
Plug your iPhone into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button

Step Six
RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode. You can find more help with DFU mode here

Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.

Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.

Step Seven
Your iPhone will now reboot

Step Eight
RedSn0w will now prepare the jailbreak data.

Step Nine
Select Cydia from the list of options and click Next.

Step Ten
Your iPhone will now be rebooted again and RedSn0w will begin uploading the new RAM Disk and Kernel.

Step Eleven
Once this is complete you will be notified that RedSn0w is done. When your iPhone finishes rebooting (5 minutes or so) it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.

*As usual a big thanks to the iPhone Dev-Team, Pod2g, and Geohot for their hard work and contribution to the iPhone community.

Pod2g Demos Untethered iOS 5.0.1 Jailbreak on the iPhone 4

Pod2g has posted a video demonstrating an untethered jailbreak of iOS 5.0.1 on the iPhone 4.

Here is a new video demo of the current status of the 5.0.1 jailbreak running on an iPhone 4. This is meant to reassure people that were thinking it only works on older iPods.

The jailbreak is near ready for prime time (excluding 4S and iPad 2). Patches are the same as redsn0w's. Expect the same level of stability. Some more days to wait. Be patient, we're doing our best.

As usual you can follow us on @limerain_com, Facebook page , and RSS to be notified of any progress updates.

Pod2g Resolves Cache Troubles With the iPhone 4S Untethered Jailbreak

Pod2g has resolved the cache troubles with the iPhone 4S untethered jailbreak, according to a new progress update.

---
OK, figured it out, the A5 cache is not a problem anymore. I sorted it out by doing the untether in a single thread and by flushing all the dcache then all the icache in a row at a strategical point of the process. It took me like a hundred of tests to find the key. Hard for the nerves.

For the tech guys, here is a link explaining issues related to self modifying code ( or code patching ) on the ARM platform : http://blogs.arm.com/software-enablemen ... ying-code/

Another news : I discussed with @saurik today about the launchd boot process, and he's found one missing piece of the puzzle I needed to have a perfectly stable jailbreak. He's definitly one of the best iOS gurus out there. Thank you saurik!

Things are definitely progressing. We'll let you know when we have more news via @limerain_com, Facebook page , and RSS.

Update on the Untethered Jailbreak for the iPhone 4S

Pod2g has issued an update on the progress of the untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 4S.

For those who haven't been tracking his progress, last week pod2g successfully untethered the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod 4G, iPod 3G, iPad 1, and Apple TV 2 (4.4.3). He has now turned his attention to the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2.

Here are the news of the 4S week-end. The untether fails right now because I'm having processor cache issues. I'm close, but I can't figure out what happens. It certainly has something to do with the Cortex-A9 cache management.

I could sort it out quick, it's a matter of chance. I'll report you my progress tomorrow.

As usual we will keep you up to date with the latest. You can follow Us via @limerain_com, Facebook page , or RSS.

Progress Report on the iOS 5.0.1 Untethered Jailbreak

Pod2g has issued a new progress report on the iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak in which he reveals that the jailbreak for old devices is being packaged for release.

Thanks to donators, pod2g has received enough financial support to purchase an iPhone 4S and iPad 2 and will soon start working on the jailbreak for those devices.

---
Hello my friends,I know that I've been silent yesterday and that it was annoying.

Sorry for this, but I had to organize things for the release.
Also, I've tested iPad 1 and it worked.
Today I hope I can test a 3Gs.

BTW: please don't propose to be a beta tester because I'm too paranoid, fearing leaks.

Now the time to finalize the jailbreak for old devices, fix some stability issues and package the whole. That will take some days.

In the meanwhile, I'm starting the research for iPad 2 and 4S.I'll take you informed of my progress.

Finally, I want to thank all who donated. I now can buy both devices! I don't know what to say.

Thank you very much my friends.
---

Stay tuned to Limerain on @limerain_com, Facebook page , or RSS for news on when the jailbreak will be released.

Untethered Jailbreak Completed for iPhone 4/3GS, iPod Touch 4G/3G, iPad 1, ATV 2 iPhone 4s and iPad 2 I in te works

Pod2g has announced the completion of an untethered iOS 5.0.1 jailbreak of the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod 4G, iPod 3G, iPad 1, and Apple TV 2 (4.4.3).

Previously, pod2g said that he would work on jailbreaking the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 after finishing the jailbreaks for the above devices.

Tons of questions from my nice followers. Too early to answer. Will work on iOS 5.0.1, will try iPad 2 and 4S after others are ready.

Let's hope he is successful with the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 as well. Stay tuned to Limerain on Twitter, Facebook, or RSS for news on when jailbreak will be released.

iPhone 4 Gets Untethered Jailbreak on iOS 5.0.1

Pod2g has announced that he's successfully performed an untethered jailbreak on an iPhone 4 running iOS 5.0.1.

Got an untethered iPhone 4 running iOS 5.0.1. Feel free to update.

Of course, if you want to SIM unlock, don't update using Apple's original FW nor update OTA.

This is great news! We strongly recommend that everyone use iFaith or TinyUmbrella to save their iOS 5.0.1 SHSH Blobs.

You can find instructions on how to do that here: Windows, Mac

Pod2g on the Untethered Jailbreak for iOS 5

Pod2g has started a new blog to chronicle his work on the iOS 5 untethered jailbreak he demonstrated earlier today.

Here's the first post:

---
Today I succeed in jailbreaking my iPod 3G. The exploit is user-land, rely on a user ROP payload and a kernel write anywhere exploit.

I can't give much details right now, but here are the next steps :
- upgrade the iPod 3G to iOS 5.0.1
- do the same on iPhone 4 / iOS 5.0.1
- then iPad 1 & iPod 4G

At every step, the exploit code needs certainly to be reworked, but I really don't know right now. Next, I'll return to the research for iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. I don't know if I gonna release first for other devices or not. I've to think about it. Feel free to give your opinion.
---

We'll keep you up to date with news on pod2g's progress.

Apple Loses Case Over 'iPad' Trademark in China

Apple has reportedly lost a trademark battle with a Chinese company that lawfully trademarked the 'iPad' name in 2000, reports the Financial Post.

The Southern Metropolis Daily newspaper is citing court documents that indicate a Chinese patent court in Shenzhen rejected Apple's claim that Proview Technology was infringing on its trademark.

Apple purchased the European rights to the iPad name from Proview's global parent last year for about $55,000 and filed an infringement lawsuit against the Shenzhen subsidiary six months ago, claiming the European deal also included China. While Tuesday's reported ruling suggests China's legal system does not agree, Apple officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Proview, having 400 million yuan ($64 million dollars) in debt, sued Apple in October for 10 billion yuan ($1.6 billion) in damages due to copyright infringement.

Unlock Your iPhone 4S Without Jailbreaking?

A new unlock method has surfaced today which claims to work without the need of any software, hardware or jailbreak.

A bug in iOS 5 discovered by Michael Capozzi theoretically allows any iPhone 4S to be unlocked to any GSM carrier. However, Capozzi says he was only able to test with T-Mobile.

We are currently working towards independent confirmation of his method. It does require you to have an active T-Mobile SIM card (with data working). Remember it must be cut to micro-SIM size to fit the iPhone 4S.

The Steps:
● Insert original carrier AT&T SIM card
● Dial 611 for AT&T customer service hotline and drop the call
● Turn on Airplane Mode
● Take out AT&T SIM card
● Insert T-Mobile SIM card
● Make sure WiFi is off ( also tap on 'Forget this Network" to make sure it doesn't connect automatically later)
● Switch off Airplane Mode and iPhone will search for network. This is followed by the Apple splash screen appearing.
● Activation Required will be displayed on the screen
● EDGE network will activate automatically – notice the 'E' on the top left corner of the screen
● Wait for about 20-30 seconds and turn off the phone
● Turn on iPhone and the same Activation Required screen will be displayed
● When you see one signal bar, tap on Use Cellular Connection
● Eject SIM card
● Activation Required screen will be displayed the second time
● Insert SIM card
● Unlocked!

We are getting some confirmation reports. If you are able to test this, please let us know your results. Remember this method may unlock your device; however, it will not last through a reboot. So while not practical for day to day use. It may benefit those traveling abroad.

Update:
Gizmodo is claiming some confirmation as well.

Jobs Told Obama 'You're Headed For A One-Term Presidency'

Another interesting tidbit from the upcoming Steve Jobs biography by Walter Isaacson quotes Jobs telling President Obama, 'You're headed for a one-term presidency', reports the Huffington Post.

According to the book, Jobs nearly missed meeting Obama in 2010 because he wanted a personal invitation from the President. The standoff lasted for five days before Jobs relented and they met at the Westin San Francisco Airport.

"You're headed for a one-term presidency," he told Obama. He insisted that the administrator needed to be more business friendly and cited the ease with which companies could build factories in China unlike the U.S. where regulations and unnecessary costs make things difficult.

Jobs also criticized the education system in America, saying it was "crippled by union work rules."

"Until the teachers' unions were broken, there was almost no hope for education reform." Jobs reportedly proposed allowing principals to hire and fire teachers based on merit, that schools stay open until 6 p.m. and that they be open 11 months a year.

Finally, Jobs suggested that Obama meet for dinner with six or seven other CEOs who could help express the needs of innovative business. When the White House began adding too many names to the list of attendees, Jobs said that it was growing too big and that "he had no intention of coming." Exhibiting his notorious attention to detail, Jobs also complained the menu was far too fancy and objected to a chocolate truffle dessert. He was overruled by the White House which cited the president's fondness for cream pie.

Though Jobs was not that impressed by Obama, later telling Isaacson that his focus on the reasons that things can't get done "infuriates" him, they kept in touch and talked by phone a few more times. Jobs even offered to help create Obama's political ads for the 2012 campaign. "He had made the same offer in 2008, but he'd become annoyed when Obama's strategist David Axelrod wasn't totally deferential," writes Isaacson. Jobs later told the author that he wanted to do for Obama what the legendary "morning in America" ads did for Ronald Reagan.

Apple Adds GLONASS Location Support to iPhone 4S

One new feature of the iPhone 4S that may have snuck by your radar is support for GLONASS, reports TNW.

GLONASS, an acronym for Globalnaya navigatsionnaya sputnikovaya sistema or Global Navigation Satellite System, is a radio-based satellite navigation system operated for the Russian government by the Russian Space Forces. It is an alternative and complement to the United States' Global Positioning System (GPS). [W]

GLONASS navigation definitions for latitude and longitude are 4.46 - 7.38 m. In comparison, GPS navigation definitions are 2.00 - 8.76 m. This indicates that GPS is slightly more accurate; however, on northern latitudes, GLONASS' accuracy is better than GPS due to the orbital position of the satellites.

Using both GLONASS and GPS satellites together provides improved coverage and gives a very fast fix time due to over 50 satellites being available. GLONASS/GPS navigation definitions are 2.37 - 4.65 m.

Apple's Integration of Twitter Triples the Signups from iOS

Apple's integration of Twitter has led to triple the daily Twitter signups via iOS, says CEO Dick Costolo.

"The iOS integration is going to be absolutely huge for us, even better than we thought it was," Costolo said. "I didn't realize how frictionless this would be," he added. "It's so native."

Speaking at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, Costolo said the company partnered with Apple because they share a similar product mentality of enhancing products by editing them down, and "offering simplicity in a world of complexity."

Costolo also revealed that users are sending 250 million tweets per day.
