Trim Enabler Enables the Trim Function for Non-Apple SSDs

Trim Enabler 2.0 has been released to let you enable the Trim function and S.M.A.R.T. monitoring system for non-Apple solid state drives.

Trim
With Trim Enabler, you can enable Trim for third party Solid State Drives in Mac OSX. Trim is a command that is executed in the background by the operative system when you delete files, informing the SSD that the blocks are no longer in use and can be deleted. By doing this, the SSD can avoid slowing down future write operations to those blocks.

S.M.A.R.T
Using the S.M.A.R.T monitoring system, Trim Enabler let's you view information that is relevant to the health of the drive. Solid State Drives do not last forever, but by using the S.M.A.R.T tool you can detect issues such as rapidly increasing amount of written data, and increase the lifetime of your SSD.

Bill Gates Talks About His Last Conversation With Steve Jobs [Video]

Bill Gates talks about his philanthropic work and his last conversation with Steve Jobs in this interview with ABC News.

Before Jobs passed, Gates paid a visit to the home of his longtime friend and rival.

"He and I always enjoyed talking. He would throw some things out, you know, some stimulating things. We'd talk about the other companies that have come along. We talked about our families and how lucky we'd both been in terms of the women we married. It was great relaxed conversation."

How did Jobs' death affect him? "Well, it's very strange to have somebody who's so vibrant and made such a huge difference and been ... kind of a constant presence, to have him die," Gates said. "It makes you feel like, 'Wow, we're getting old.' I hope I still have quite a bit of time for the focus I have now, which is the philanthropic work. And there's drugs we're investing in now that won't be out for 15 years -- malaria eradication, I need a couple of decades here to fulfill that opportunity. But, you know, it reminds you that you gotta pick important stuff, because you only have a limited time."

Take a look below...

Check Out This Amazing iDesk Concept [Images]

MacLife has posted concept photos of the Apple iDesk, a multitouch table that functions similar to the Microsoft Surface.

Imagine an entirely adaptable workspace that doesn't just hold your equipment, but enhances and interacts with it. As with Microsoft's Surface technology, the entire desk would be a touch-sensitive display capable of running several simultaneous apps, some of which--such as a calendar, phone, and digital Post-It notes-would replace their physical counterparts entirely. Notifications, to-do lists, video conferencing, Adobe tool palettes, and countless widgets such as calculators and weather reports would all appear right on the surface of your desk, literally putting your entire working world at your fingertips.

Features:
● Sync with any iOS device simply by placing it upon the desk.
● You won't need a mouse when any area of your touch-sensitive desk can be designated as a trackpad.
● Making calls, scheduling appointments, and much more could be done from the surface of a clean, clutter-free workspace.

IHS iSuppli: Windows Phone to Surpass iPhone By 2015

IHS iSuppli is predicting that Windows Phone will surpass Apple's iOS by 2015.

Largely based on Nokia's strong support, Windows Phone is set to regain the No. 2 rank in the smartphone operating system in 2015. Finnish-based Nokia in 2009 lost its second-place worldwide ranking because of rising competition from Google Inc.'s Android and Apple Inc.'s iOS.

According to their analysis, in 2015 Windows Phone will account for 16.7% of smartphones shipped, up from less than 2% in 2011. The boost is predicted largely because of Nokia's support for the operating system.

"One of the hottest new products unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show was the Lumia 900, a Windows Phone-based smartphone sporting a flashy set of features that makes it competitive with the best alternatives offered by the Android camp," said Wayne Lam, senior analyst for wireless communications at IHS. "This hot product represents Nokia's first step to reclaim its market share. Combined with Nokia's efforts to drive the development of the Windows Phone ecosystem, the Lumia 900 and its successors will help Microsoft to reclaim its No. 2 ranking in smartphone operating system market share in 2015."

Apple is Switching to Halogen-Free Power/USB Cables

Apple is switching to improved power and USB cables that are halogen-free and friendlier to the environment, reports This Is London.

When halogen cables are disposed of by incineration they release toxic fumes that are dangerous to humans and the environment.

Volex, a company 23% owned by billionaire Nat Rothschild, makes the cables used for Apple products including MacBooks, iPhones and iPads. It's spending $6 million in design and start-up costs for the new cables.

Apple Makes You Promise Not to Use iTunes to Build a Nuclear Bomb

Apple's iTunes Terms and Conditions is a huge document with a lot of rules you agree to abide by in order to use the service.

Since most people just click 'Agree' without reading the terms, it may surprise you to know that Apple makes you promise not to use the application to build a nuclear bomb.

Here's the section as first noticed by @markgurman:

By using the Licensed Application, you represent and warrant that you are not located in any such country or on any such list. You also agree that you will not use these products for any purposes prohibited by United States law, including, without limitation, the development, design, manufacture, or production of nuclear, missile, or chemical or biological weapons.

Powerful Visual Approach To Learning Japanese

Renkara Media Group has released a new language app that teaches Japanese kanji using engaging visual mnemonics. Instead of using traditional rote memorization, KanjiPictoGraphix offers a different, visual approach where vivid illustrations are used to associate a kanji with its meaning. Each drawing closely resembles and captures the meaning of a kanji. When seeing the kanji on its own, the drawing is recalled automatically, along with its associated meaning.

KanjiPictoGraphix contains 611 of the Joyo Kanji, the guide to characters compiled by the Japanese Ministry of Education. Learning these kanji is an excellent step towards mastering written Japanese. For each of these kanji, stroke diagrams are included, as well as the on yomi and kun yomi readings presented in both kana and romanji. Each kanji includes additional related vocabulary.

"KanjiPictoGraphix is an innovative and captivating way to learn Japanese kanji. The mnemonic illustrations are simply gorgeous and really draw the student into the language and introduce kanji characters in a dynamic and memorable fashion," said Charles Sieg, President of Renkara Media Group. "We designed KanjiPictoGraphix to be entertaining as well as educational, helping students discover the underlying relationships between characters by exploring themes and similarities without the constraints of traditional methods."

Popular features of KanjiPictoGraphix include:

* Original Color Illustrations - 611 beautifully drawn illustrations make learning kanji a visual delight

* Optimized Artwork for the Retina Display - High-resolution artwork is provided to take advantage of the gorgeous Retina Display

* Helpful Mnemonics - Each kanji has a thoughtful and memorable mnemonic

* Comprehensive Stroke Diagrams - Stroke diagrams are included for each kanji. The strokes are highlighted with an indication of where to begin each. In total, almost 3,000 diagrams have been rendered

* Vocabulary - Vocabulary words are provided for each kanji. The application contains over 3,600 total vocabulary terms

* Pronunciations - On yomi and kun yomi kana readings are included in kana and in romanji

* Logical, Thematic, and Structural Organization - Kanji are organized by elements, stroke count, color, grade, and pack

* Search and Sort - Search kanji by English or Japanese readings, or by Joyo number. Sort kanji by stroke count, color, grade, or pack

* Comprehensive Guide - Built-in documentation helps you get started quickly and learn the essentials of kanji and Japanese

* Self-Contained - All content is contained within the application - no network connection is required

"KanjiPictoGraphix is intuitive, comprehensive, and flexible. The app helps students master kanji at their own pace using proven mnemonics to increase retention and recall," said Charles Sieg. "With stroke diagrams, extensive vocabulary, and pronunciations, KanjiPictoGraphix is a powerful resource for anyone learning Japanese, regardless of current proficiency."

Pricing and Availability:
KanjiPictoGraphix 1.0 is priced at $12.99 (USD) and is available for immediate download exclusively through Apple's iTunes App Store in the Education category.

Griffin's Twenty Digital Amplifier Lets Your Existing Speakers Work With AirPlay

Griffin's Twenty Digital Audio Amplifier lets you use your existing speakers with AirPlay.

Griffin's Twenty digital audio amplifier lets a user play digital audio from iTunes to an existing set of speakers wirelessly using an Airport Express wireless base station and Apple's AirPlay wireless audio/video protocol. The result is a zero-configuration audio set-up, streaming Apple Lossless sound from iTunes to the user's speakers via a low-profile digital amplifier.

20Watts Per Channel
Power to run your bookshelf and similar speakers. Add a powered sub-woofer for enhanced low-end sound

Optical Audio
Connect to Airport Express's S/PIDF optical output with the included fiber optic cable for the best sound possible

New Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 iPhone Controlled Quadricopter Unveiled

The press release for the upcoming Parrot AR.Drone 2.0, an update to the iPhone controlled quadricopter, has apparently been leaked online a bit early.

The AR.Drone 2.0 is set to be unveiled at CES and will feature a 720p camera, video recording, flight data sharing, new piloting mode, increased stability and brand-new look.

You can read the detailed release below...

-----
A flying HD camera
While in flight, the Parrot AR.Drone 2.0's front camera transmits real-time what the quadricopter sees onto the pilot's device screen.

For the first time the AR.Drone 2.0 camera, with a 1280x720 resolution, shows a view from the sky in high definition with smooth and unbelievable images.

The pilot enjoys an experience like never before, as if he was on board. For gaming purposes, this camera also can recognize specific shapes and colors to show augmented-reality elements on the smartphone's screen.

Record and share flying experiences
Thanks to the new AR.FreeFlight 2.0 piloting application, players can record their own HD videos and watch them or share them with the AR.Drone community.

Additionally, with the "travelling" feature, the pilot can film HD video sequences like a professional! Simply select the direction of travel (forward, back, sideways) and the duration, and the AR.Drone 2.0 does the rest.

AR.FreeFlight 2.0, a new piloting and sharing platform
In addition to flying the AR.Drone, new application AR.FreeFlight 2.0 – available to download for free from the AppStoreSM and AndroidTM Market – offers players a new interface and several options.

● FreeFlight: Access to the piloting application.
● The pilot can record flights, take HD videos or photos and save them in the piloting device. All the flight data (altitude, speed, duration and place) can be saved, checked by the pilot and shared with the community.
● Guest Space: Access an overview of the AR.Drone 2.0, the best flight videos and practical information.
● Drone Update: Access the AR.Drone 2.0's free software updates.
● AR.Drone Academy: Get geolocation data of the best flight zones, watch other pilots' videos and access their shared flight data.
● AR.Games: Access applications/games available for the AR.Drone.
● Photos/Videos: Directly access your own videos and photos. Watch or upload to YouTube for the community to enjoy.

'Absolute Flight', a revolutionary ultra-intuitive flight mode
After the AR.FreeFlight 2.0 pilot application has been loaded onto an iOS or AndroidTM smartphone or tablet, the Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 connects to the device via Wi-Fi. After connection, all the on-board instruments appear on screen with a cockpit view.

Press the take off button briefly and the four brushless motors turn on. The AR.Drone 2.0 takes off.

Flying is very simple. With your thumbs placed on either side of the screen, a control button automatically forms beneath:

● Press and hold the left button and the AR.Drone 2.0 follows the movement of the pilot's device: it moves forward, backwards or sideways when you tilt the tablet forward, towards you or to the left or right.
● Slide your finger over the right button, and the quadricopter rises, descends or rotates right or left.

Thanks to Parrot's patented new 'Absolute Control' mode, the player accesses an even more intuitive piloting system.

With a 3D magnetometer, the AR.Drone 2.0 knows its precise orientation with respect to the smartphone, which becomes the reference point. The pilot no longer needs to care about the orientation of the AR.Drone 2.0's front camera, which will accurately track the smartphone's motion and tilt.

Experienced players will select 'Relative Flight' mode, the conventional flight mode. This disables Parrot AR.Drone 2.0's magnetometer. The pilot manages the quadricopter's orientation with no assistance.

Surprising stability at any altitude
The heart of the AR.Drone 2.0 contains MEMS (microelectromechanical systems).
A 3-axis accelerometer, a 3-axis gyroscope, a 3-axis magnetometer and a pressure sensor give the Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 surprising stability, complete with:

● 2 ultrasound sensors, which analyze flight altitude up to 6 meters. New! A pressure sensor completes the device and provides great vertical stability.
● 4 blades, specially designed for the AR.Drone 2.0, make it possible to carry out smooth flights.
● A second camera, placed beneath the quadricopter and connected to the central inertial unit, measures the craft's speed using an image comparison system.

2 hulls made for both types of flight
The Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 has 2 hulls with specially designed contours. Made of PA66 (a material used in designing car bumpers), they are light, highly resistant and protect the quadricopter.

For outdoor flight, the contoured hull, available in three colors (orange/yellow; orange/green; orange/blue), reduces wind resistance and preserves the AR.Drone 2.0's handling and stability.

When indoor, a second hull protects the blades from any impact. The black-and-white cockpit, underlined with a red stripe, reinforces the quadricopter's mysterious, thrilling appearance.

Finally, light-emitting diodes (green in front, red in rear), positioned on the landing gear, help the pilot track the orientation of the AR.Drone 2.0 for easier flying.

An Open Development Platform
In order to expand the use of the Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 and its compatibility with other operating systems and to develop new flying games and applications, Parrot is providing developers and members of the Apple and AndroidTM communities with a software development kit.

By logging in at https://projects.ardrone.org and accepting the terms of the license, developers can access the source code used to fly the AR.Drone 2.0. A wiki and a tutorial also are available. A forum is available to discuss new developments and share feedback with Parrot engineers.

----

The Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 runs on a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and will be available for purchase at selected retailers in Q2-2012 in the United States for $299 MSRP.

Take Your Maps Anywhere With MapPocket

Leaping Bytes has announced the release of MapPocket v.2.3, an update to their map application that can help you to save a lot on roaming charges while traveling. MapPocket allows you to put online maps in your pocket, so you can use them later without an Internet connection.

Whats New in MapPocket v.2.3:
* Multi-zoom level recording is fully implemented. Now it is possible to save map tiles for up to 6 different zoom levels.

There are number of reasons why you may want to use MapPocket:
* If you go abroad and want to avoid roaming charges (while using maps)
* If you go "into the wild" where, most likely, you will not have any Internet connection (with some cell providers "wild" could mean "just around the corner")
* If you own an iPad or iPod without a cell data plan and going to wonder into an area without free wifi
* And you can save some trees by not printing your maps anymore

Before you go offline, plan your expedition using an intuitive interface. At any moment touch one button to start recording what you see. MapPocket will remember all tiles you viewed. Once recorded, maps will be available any time without the internet connection. You can choose maps from one of four providers: Google, Mapquest, Bing or OpenStreetMap. If you go to Paris you may want to choose a "roadmap" view, if you go to the jungles of Amazonia you may prefer a "satellite" view.

Recorded maps are easily shared between all your devices using iCloud or DropBox. You can record a map using convenience of a large iPad's screen and later you can access the same map on your iPhone. While planning expedition (online), you can use standard search functionality to locate points of interest. Even when offline, you can use built-in GPS to pin-point your exact location on a recorded map.

Pricing and Availability:
MapPocket 2.3 is only $0.99 USD (or equivalent amount in other currencies) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Travel category.

Planetbeing, MuscleNerd, and P0sixninja Help Pod2g With A5 Untethered Jailbreak

Pod2g has announced that Planetbeing, MuscleNerd, and P0sixninja have joined his effort to release an untethered jailbreak of the iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

@planetbeing, the legendary hacker behind iPhone Linux and lot of jailbreaks has joined the A5 research! The famous @MuscleNerd, the leader of the iPhone Dev Team, who did a lot of tests for Corona and whom integrated it and made it simple in redsn0w is willing to help also. And last, but not least @p0sixninja, the leader of the Chronic Dev Team, and my partner for years on iPhone security research has started to code and fuzz the Apple sandbox.

We now have a dream team to find a path for a public release of the A5 jailbreak. Cross your fingers.

Yesterday, pod2g posted a FAQ on why the A5 jailbreak had not been released yet. The key reason being that the exploit used to inject the untethering files to the 4S relies on having a developer account.

With the help of planetbeing, MuscleNerd, and p0sixninja, pod2g is hoping to find a distributable exploit to remount the system partition read/write and to set Corona files at the correct places.

Pod2g Posts FAQ on iPhone 4S and iPad 2 Untethered Jailbreak

Pod2g has posted on his blog to answer some questions about the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 untethered jailbreak.

How could pod2g have an untethered 4S and dev teams still haven't released tools to achieve this at home ?
The exploit I used to inject the untethering files to the 4S relies on having a developer account, and can't be released publicly. It's the same reason why @MuscleNerd has an iPad 2 tethered jailbreak but couldn't distribute it. So, we need to find a distributable exploit to remount the system partition read/write and to set Corona files at the correct places.

Why A4 version of Corona was easier to release ?
Because a tethered jailbreak is a good way to install Corona!

Why don't you do a tethered jailbreak then ?
A tethered jailbreak also relies on an exploitable vulnerability that we still haven't found yet !

Earlier this week, pod2g posted that he had made good progress on the jailbreak for A5 devices and said with some luck we could expect a release in a week.

Pod2g Makes Progress With A5 Jailbreak, Release Could Come in a Week!

Pod2g has just tweeted some interesting information regarding the A5 jailbreak. Apparently, pod2g has made good progress on the jailbreak for A5 devices and claims that if lucky, we could expect it in a week!

I made a step today for the A5. With some luck we could expect a release in a week.

Keep in mind though, there are still some roadblocks ahead and the ETA can always get pushed back. In the meantime, you can jailbreak any pre-A5 device on 5.0.1 using our jailbreak tutorial page located here.

We will keep you updated on the A5 jailbreak as well. You can follow us on @limerain_com, Facebook page , RSS.

Pull To Dismiss Lets You Swipe to Quickly Hide the Keyboard

Pull to Dismiss is a new tweak from Ryan Petrich that lets you swipe to quickly hide the keyboard.

Dismiss keyboard by scrolling. In apps and views where a scrolling list and a keyboard are shown together, swiping from the list down the face of the keyboard will dismiss it more conveniently. This works in many popular and standard apps.

Pull to Dismiss does not add any icons to the home screen and has no configurable options. You can download it from the Big Boss Cydia repository.

Fullscreen iPad Apps Running on the Apple TV [Video]

Steve Troughton-Smith and @TheMudKip have made more progress on their hack allowing iOS applications to run on the Apple TV.

Much of today was spent making apps run as the full-screen iPad versions. I started writing a new launcher from scratch for the TV form factor; as of right now it's not using IR remote input - we're controlling most things from VNC or over SSH.

Here you can see me demonstrating a few apps, like Facebook, Maps, Safari and YouTube. Most apps (and games) from the App Store should work too. As you can see, iOS kinda works on larger screens!

Once the developers have completed their work you should be able to run any iOS application on a jailbroken Apple TV. We'll keep you up to date on their progress.

Take a look at the video below...
